Martha,
I, too, have been looking for a childhood book that my mom had lying around the house. It was a book of classic poetry & I can't imagine who may have been reading it, other than I; I would be forever grateful if I were able to locate a copy. No name, I just know that it had a red binder with (I believe) gold lettering & there were a few of my favorite (at that time)poems in there that have been a part of my tapestry. I wrote poetry as a child & possession of that book would mean the world to my creative side. Thank you for stirring up the need to find it.....your friend, Lori K. smooches
Just seeing "The Island of the Dolphins" you showed, brought back good memories of enjoying the book over and over again. I often imagined being her friend on that island and sharing the adventures. Thanks. and I just might go to the li library to 'recall' her and the island.
Just be careful children and read read and enjoy your Summer you learn so much from books.
My Side Of The Mountain was an excellent book and I have fond memories of reading it!! Thank you for bringing those back for me!!! xoxo
Hi, would the book you are looking for be Mr. Toggles zipper by pulver ?
As a teacher, I took a course in Children's Literature. What a delight it was!!
Your mention of MY SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN made me gasp. It was one of my favorite books, and I hadn't thought of it in years. Thanks for the memory.
Hi Martha, My favorite book when I was a kid was the "Kittens Secret." It was about a ketten who disappeared each day and would return with muddy footprints each day. I loved to sit with my grandmother and she would read this book to me whenever we had some quiet time together. It was one of those special moments that lives in your heart forever. Thanks for the memory. Linda
I have spent many years reading childrens books to my own child and to many children who were in my 4th grade school class. Some of those favorite books were: Island of the Blue Dolphins, The Singing Tree, Summer of the Monkeys, Where the red fern grows, A tree for Peter, Hatchet, The Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe, The trumpet of the Swan Blue Willow and Miss Hickory. So many great books that are teaching children good qualities, how to succeed, and getting along with others, etc. I still have former students ask me if I remember such and such a book and that that was her favorite. Reading brings people together to share ideas. Thanks for sharing your books! Brenda
I don't know the book you are talking about. I am sorry due to the fact that I wish I did. But what I do remember is the excitement of reading. The joy of having to use your imagination. I think that a great book is one that you wonder what the characters are doing after you finished the last page. I think as an adult we forget what that word is--imagination. The time before computers, and before block buster movies. It is something about the classic books that makes you really want to run to the nearest library on these hot summer days and just go read!! Thank you for sharing.
Did a quick search for the book you mentioned - Buttons.....
Sorry, I didn't find anything
but I'm thinking.......(smoke out the ears)
Could you be remembering a story that was in a school text book or reader.
(vs. an individual book)
If so, that will make the search a bit harder
I've put the question to someone who taught school in the early 50s and a school teacher/principal currently in the school system - let's see if anyone comes back with any info - will let ya know.
Another place to check (again, sorry I don't have access to this at the moment) - The Letter People Curriculum - Mr. B - with his beautiful bouttons - Again, there were many supplements to that series - not just the main book - but it's a place to start.
Thank you for the suggestions. My oldest grandchild is 15 and she still joins the younger ones to hear me read to them. It is a wonderful blessing for us all. You've mentioned a few I've not read so.........off to the library. BLessings, Lynn
