I recently came accross your blog and have been reading along. I thought I would leave my first comment. I dont know what to say except that I have enjoyed reading. Nice blog. I will keep visiting this blog very often.

Thank you for helping others be aware of life, with its problems and some of its solutions. I think most people know that this isn't the only cause of the disease but it's a start and education is important-ignorance can be dangerous. I applaud anyone helping others-no need to put them down for their efforts even if we see things a bit differently. Thank you again for sharing from your heart! You are always a blessing!

My Dad died from Alzheimer's and I will do all in my power to avoid it. This Dr. is right, and I know, I am a nurse. I see elderly every day in the home. We must exercise, eat right, and keep our brains stimulated. Thanks Martha for daily education, and inspiration. I still watch Touch By An Angel each day.

~~~~~~~ That was an interesting and odd video.
The information was not wholly complete. It
was a panacea-type presentation, as in activate
your brain and exercise to ward off dementia/AD. Of
course, these measures can be of help, but there
is more to it all than was noted in that flippant video.
Alzheimer's Disease causes 50-560% of all dementia.
Dementia is not Alzheimer's Disease. Dementia is one
symptom of AD. Dementia is one of many symptoms of various
other organic diseases -- such as also, Lewy body
disease and Pick's. I would think that clown turned
gyn turned AD "educator" would make that fact clear.
Just because you have dementia, does not automatically mean
you have AD.
Illnesses other than the brain, such as kidneys, liver and lung
diseases, can all lead to dementia. No matter how much you
do those crossword puzzles and run marathons. Metabolic disorders,
like B12 and folate deficiency, can lead to dementia symptom.
Diseases of the blood vessels such as stroke, can lead to a
disorder known as multi-infarct dementia. Toxic reactions, like
excessive alcohol and drug use can contribute to dementia. Infections
that effect the brain and spinal cord, such as AIDS dementia complex
and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease can bring on dementia. Head injuries
are a biggie for dementia cause, either single severe trauma or
longer term smaller injuries (like say, in boxing).
Dementia caused by nervous system disease, esp. AD, is increasing in
frequency more than most types of dementia -- it's organic. The increased
incidence of AIDS dementia complex helps account for the increased
dementia statistics in recent history -- it's not soley due to Alzheimer's
as the person in the video led views to believe. Better treatent for HIV
wlll bring down the occurance of AIDS-associated dementia in coming years.
Alzheimer's is increasing, but so is Lewy and Pick's.
I tell people that if they feel they are absent-minded and scattered and
only they notice, then it's not a problem. If others, regularly, notice
the memory deficit, then it's a problem to be looked after. That is my
benchmark for calming those alarmed with themselves.
Laughter and humor is divine! There is a time to be the show and there is
a time to show. Complete, organized information delivered straight, with
quiet compassion, trumps when people are fact finding to make good decisions.
There is nothing funny, anywhere, about someone losing their mind.
