Fearless Fridays: fear of flying

Friday November 13, 2009

Aloha,

I used to be terrified of flying. My fear was courtesy of my grandmother. My dad had a small plane and took me flying with him all the time. I loved it. Then he left me at his mother's house for a short time, she hated flying and by the time he came back to get me I was so afraid I threw up just at the thought of flying. It was a very messy flight home to NY from East Mckeesport, PA.

I had no idea they had all sorts of names for fear of flying including aerophobia, aviatophobia, aviophobia or pteromerhanophobia. I continued to be afraid into my early thirties. Oddly enough being on a commercial flight that almost crashed relieved me of that fear.

Shortly after the plane took off it began to plummet and the pilot was able to pull the plane up just before we crashed. As we plunged toward the earth I thought, all in all not a bad way to die and then I imagined hundreds of angels under the plane holding it up. At that moment the airplane began to gain altitude. Did that thought change anything? I'll never know for sure but since then whenever I fly I know there are angels under the plane carrying it safely to its destination. I haven't been afraid since.

If you have fear of flying, I suggest asking the angels to hold you lovingly in their arms until your fear goes away. Whenever the fear returns know the angels are there for you. You can practice before you get on the plane too. See yourself going to the airport already surrounded my angels. Imagine feeling safe and relaxed as you board the plane. See yourself enjoying the flight and arriving at your destination totally relaxed and at ease.

Susan

Aloha Susan, As an international pilot I certainly don't have the fear of flying. Though I help those who do using hypnosis. The challenge most people have when they are afraid to fly is that they are thinking of all the worst things that MIGHT happen. They start thinking these thoughts from the moment the idea of a vacation or business trip enters their minds. Seeing yourself surrounded by angels is a very comforting thought and will carry people through the trip. BTW, one of my very favorite family vacations was on the Big Island. We stayed for three weeks in a house near a fantastic snorkeling place that we could walk to.

Aloha Pilot DJ,

I was once told we can't focus on two things at once. Either we focus on love or fear. Angels sure create a nicer version of life! The Big Island is special and the snorkeling on the Kona side is amazing to say the least.

Thanks for stopping by and happy skies!

With love and aloha,
Susan

About Pele
Pele is the Hawaiian goddess of the volcano as well as the goddess of transformation, passion, vitality and creation. Pele is a powerful force on the Hawaiian islands. Shortly after I moved to Hawaii, a friend suggested I have my property blessed. I asked Pele if I could live and work on her land. She graciously agreed, so I always take time to thank her and ask for her blessing in my endeavors.
