Fearless Fridays: why do bad things happen

posted by Susan Gregg | 12:00am Friday January 15, 2010

I so often hear these type of questions: “Why do bad things happen to good people? Why does God let a child die needlessly, a natural disaster kill or displace millions? Why does God allow violence? Why did God allow the earthquake in Haiti?”

Life is God’s unconditional gift to us, the rest is just part of living here on planet earth and all of the events in life are incredible gifts. I believe we can use every event to either deepen our experience of oneness and our connection to the divine or enhance our filter system. A vengeful God that believes there is only one path to salvation or one that punishes people is one way to maintain our limiting beliefs and deepen our sense of isolation from the divine.

Let me explain ……

When I look at this amazing world and see all the miracles and magic, my concept of God expands exponentially. I can’t image God being anything but loving, compassionate and kind. I also imagine God has a sense of humor when I look at some of the creatures.

I highly doubt God sees some of our fearful choices as sinful, bad or wrong because that would imply judgment. I imagine God sees them with love and compassion, knowing we will eventually learn from our mistakes and choose love instead.

I choose to see every event as an opportunity to deepen my connection with my spirit or reaffirm my limiting beliefs, the choice is mine what I do with the event. I was abducted by two boys when I was young. For years I used that event to limit myself and my ability to love but one day I decided to see it through the eyes of the angels and my whole life changed. When I saw those two boys through the eyes of love I was able to see their fear and pain and see that what they did was consistent with their way of seeing the world.

My judging them and feeling victimized wasn’t serving me. I was truly able to see the whole event with love and compassion, it was like an incredible cosmic dance we all did and I could choose to use it to deepen my connection to my spirit and I made that choice. I suddenly realized everything including murder, rape and events like the holocaust were opportunities for us to shift our awareness and see the world as the angels did. What a relief!

So bad things only happen when we choose to judge them as bad. Instead we can see the same event as an opportunity and a gift. Sure as human beings we often need to mourn a loss or feel angry first but when we align with our spirit we can experience the gift of love in everything. It just takes willingness, time and practice and life certainly gives us lots of opportunities to practice!

Thank you Susan. This is a really appropriate post for me this morning. Ive just returned from a meeting where I’ve been dismissed from my job due to ill health. This illness has changed my life drastically over the past 9 months and now things are about to get tougher.
However, I’m determined to view this as an opportunity to trust in Universal Love which I truly believe will lead me away from a situation that no longer serves my best interests and will in time, open a new door to a new stage of spiritual growth and a different way of serving the world. I guess writing this here is a positive affirmation to that end!

I love reading your comments. Fear will paralize us if we let it. I choose not to let this economy paralize me.I feel the afterlife is so great and peaceful that i feel that the poor people that parished in haiti are in a great place now full of love and peace. They are happy, not hungery, not sick , not full of dispair, and maybe there angels can help those left in haiti.
god bless all of us and especially the people of haiti and the people helping them.

Thanks for reading and posting and sending your love and prayers to all the people of the world, especially right now to those people in Haiti.
Kathy in response to why this happened?
There are many different levels from which you can ‘see’ this event. The earth’s crust shifted causing an earthquake and many people in a very impoverished country were affected. Those events aren’t good or bad, just events. Many people died and many more were hurt. Many no longer have homes, water or food. Once again simply events until we tell ourselves a story about them making them either good or bad or punishment from a vengeful god or a gift.
I prefer to see the earthquake as an opportunity to respond in love. Maybe the people of Haiti will be better off after this earthquake. Perhaps as a species we will look at how we treat one another and decided to be more loving and generous. There are limitless possibilities in every moment and only we, as an individual can decide what we will create next. If we look at the event and judge it as bad we limit our choices. If instead we look at the event and ask ourselves, “What would I like to create?”
I would like to create a world where all people have plenty or clean water and resources. This earthquake has mobilized many people to help this country and perhaps that aid won’t stop after the initial rumble is cleared. Maybe a few volunteers will stay behind and their lives will be changed forever. Only time will tell what choices are made.
When my students would ask me why I would often reply, “Because why is a crooked letter. or Why not?” Why an event happened is irrelevant what we are going to do next is really what matters.
With love and aloha,
Susan

I like this post,Susan,No matter how hard we are into our life’s journey,we need not to feel despair, hopeless, angry or mad,so sad, etc. As we all know, there’s always silver lining at the end of the rainbow, and we take and learn every lesson along the way with joy and gladness, and thank God,that while everyday is a struggle,His help, his love is also provided for us everyday. His love endures forever,no end, period!
