How to meditate

Aloha,

On Friday I said I would show you how to meditate. I have been teaching people how to meditate for over twenty years, and I consistently watch people make it much harder than it is by judging themselves and the process or expecting meditation to be something it isn't.

The only way you can meditate improperly is by not giving yourself the gift of meditating regularly. A very simple way to meditate is to sit or lay comfortably in a quiet location. Start by taking a long, slow, deep breath. Gently focus your attention on your breathing; if your mind wanders, just bring your attention back to your breathing.

The Words Behind the Words

Aloha,

Here is an article I wrote a few years ago. It is one of my most requested articles, and I thought you might enjoy it!

When my mother was a young girl, she wanted to be a poet. Her teacher made fun of her poetry, and my mom believed her. Based on her teacher's opinion, my mother gave up her dream. Each time I got my report card, my mother would be furious that I had once again flunked English. One day, she gave me a thesaurus and I began to explore the meanings of words. Sometime later, I was writing a story about a village and found the word "quaint." I can still remember the big red circle the teacher put around that word with her comment - "great word!"

I don't think I ever told my mother I loved words, and she died before I began writing. Today I am a wordsmith - I love words and have found great freedom through my writing. I achieved that freedom by giving myself permission to change my definitions of words like responsibility and fault, love and intimacy (I now think of it as 'into me see"), and by breaking all the unspoken agreements I had with my parents, my friends, and society as a whole.

I am off to Lithuania

Aloha,

For the past five years, I have gone to Lithuania in September to teach workshops for a month. This year, I am going earlier because Latvia has asked me to come. When they asked me to come the first time, I had no idea where Lithuania was or anything about the people or the country. I just knew they were literally half way around the world from me. I absolutely love going there and have fallen in love with the country and the people.

It takes me a long time to get there. I will leave tonight and won't get there until Thursday. I learned the hard way to stop half way there and rest. Lithuania was the first country to break away from the Soviet Union. Latvia and Lithuania are the only two Baltic countries that still have their original languages. So what does all this have to do with angels?

Ah, it's the weekend and summer reading

Aloha everyone,

This morning I woke up and felt relaxed, totally relaxed for the first time in a long time. I hadn't realized how stressful caring for my dad had been. Of course, waking up with the sound of the surf outside my hotel room helps.

While I was in Sedona people kept asking me for a list of suggested reading. There are so many wonderful books out there. If you have a favorite book by all means post it in the comments section. I'd love to see what you are reading. This is a list of some wonderful books about angels, miracles and grace as well as a few of my favorite books.

Everyday Grace by Marianne Williamson

Miracles: The Listener/The Gifted by Terri Blackstone

In The Arms of Angels by Joan Wester Anderson

About the Art

The angel image in the header art above and the Pele image below are from Susan's book, "The Encyclopedia of Angels, Spirit Guides and Ascended Masters." The images are used with permission from Fair Winds Press.

About Pele
Pele is the Hawaiian goddess of the volcano as well as the goddess of transformation, passion, vitality and creation. Pele is a powerful force on the Hawaiian islands. Shortly after I moved to Hawaii, a friend suggested I have my property blessed. I asked Pele if I could live and work on her land. She graciously agreed, so I always take time to thank her and ask for her blessing in my endeavors.
