Saturn and Pluto are approaching a transit to this point in my chart so I thought it might be a good time to explore some secrets about this rarely discussed point. The Imum Coeli (IC), or Nadir of the chart is the midnight point and the cusp of the fourth house. It lies opposite the Midheaven which usually gets all of the attention, which is somewhat appropriate since the Midheaven (the cusp of the tenth house) is the noon point at which we project ourselves into the public arena. The IC, or Nadir, is the point where we meet the deepest part of ourselves.
The IC is typically described as representing our family history and psychological roots. The ancient Greeks considered the IC to be the home of the underworld and in psychological astrology the IC usually represents the nurturing parent – typically the mother, but not always. Sometimes the IC represents the grandmother if the parents were absent, and the father can also be present there if he was the parent that did the nurturing in the home.
From a transformational perspective, the Imum Coeli is the midnight of the soul. It shows the psychological legacy from our parents and ancestors that submerges in the unconscious until activated, usually by transit of a planet to that point. This is the point at which we enter the underworld of our own internal psyche, turning inward to meet the essence of who we are in this lifetime.
There is a certain amount of karma and destiny inherent in the cardinal points or “angles” (ascendant/descendant, Midheaven/Nadir) and transits to angles are usually life-changing events. The nadir is where we turn inward for self-examination, where we settle with ourselves and become aware of what lies within us. Our hidden fears, desires, dreams, parts of ourselves that have become lost – all lie at the IC waiting to be discovered. Until we are able to embrace and reclaim these parts of ourselves we cannot manifest our highest aspirations as shown by the Midheaven. Therefore, the IC is really the foundation of the personality and of the chart and the key to unlocking our personal evolution.

Thank you so much for this, Lynn! I had a little light bulb moment reading this. I’ve always been an introvert and happy to be so, but while working at a public library several years ago, I did some storytelling, and it really blew me away how at home I felt being on stage and the center of attention.
Truth is, over the years, I’ve given myself a hard time about it. But having just looked at this point in my chart today, I see that my IC is in Leo.
So there you go–The Performer. The Storyteller–it all makes a lot more sense now.

Thanks for bringing attention to the IC. Uranus is transiting mine & is scheduled to finish up early next year. Lots going on in the home & with my mother. We’re doing a major bath remodel involving lots of planning to minimize the impact. And my mother is 85 & not well . . . a natural but sorrowful fact of life. She is a Libra Sun/Pisces Moon member of the Uranus in Pisces generation. Astrology is a great tool for delving behind the scenes, isn’t it

Hmm..in my slow slow quest to learn astrology (through absorbtion, I have NO short term memory!)
I looked at my chart and found this:
Imum Coeli Aquarius
Venus in Aquarius 3rd house
Saturn in Aquarius 3rd house
So I am wondering if this is a reaon for the incredibly strong heart connection I have with Aquarians in general and they with me. Some pages I Googled spoke of the IC as being the path you are supposed to walk away from and the MC as the path you walk towards (my MC is in Leo ). Which is doubly interesting as Leos and I have such a strong ANTIPATHY towards each other. The latter is so strong I have to be careful when I’m dealing with Leos because we really irk each other

Rhonda & Neith – thank you for these stories! As with most of the stuff in this blog, this was as much for me as for anyone else. I’m finding I am being forced to look deep within myself as Saturn conjuncts the IC and Pluto makes a sextile.
Sylvia, with Venus in Aquarius you would tend to be attracted to Aquarius types in general, and if Venus is with 8 degrees or so from the IC you would tend to feel very at home with them as well. But I have to say I totally disagree with the IC being the path you’re supposed to walk away from. I can see where this could be said of the South Node, which generally marks past life experiences that tend to hold us back, but the MC/IC are two sides of one polarity. If you walk away from one you walk away from the other.
Leo and Aquarius have a hard time with each other. My best friend is an Aquarius and I have a Leo Moon. Her mother was a Leo and she really hates the tendency for drama that her mother had and that I sometimes have

A great clarification of the IC in relation to MC, Lynn! Speaking of the opposites…the Buddhists & Jungians say that, for “the man of ordinary intellect”, the instinct drives and psychic images (archetypes) related to them manifest in oppposites. For example, inertia manifests in sloth and restlessness; hunger is experienced in both want and greed; and reproduction gives rise to both lust & love in its sexual phase; which can be nourishing or devouring, life-giving or death-dealing in its maternal phase. “The man of superior intellect” finds a way to reconcile the opposites and so achieves consiousness of the Self

Thanks for this Lynn. I have Pluto transiting IC now, opposing my Mercury/Midhaven and square to Uranus/Asc in Virgo! Intense!
I’d been dreading this transit coming up, as well as Pluto into my 4th.
On the first hit to the IC early in the year my mother became very ill, and spent some time in hospital. She’s recovering now, though still not totally well.
My auntie used to visit her, and if I was there I would ask her for stories about my family, she remembers them all going way back. All the anecdotes going back generations. I found out some of my family tree as well.
So yes, intense time but I found a lot out about my family roots

Excellent explanation! The Spirits teacah that this “process” also occurs in each of our bodies. In each mortal there is actually 5 bodies, Spiritual Emotional Physical, Mental and Spirit within. Each body goes through this process, each part is as important as the other, to make a “whole”…

Thanks as always for all of your comments. Barbara – I feel for you, I have Pluto conj. the IC natally and now Saturn is about to conj. the IC. It is dredging up all kinds of stuff but this is nothing new for me. It’s not at all comfortable but it helps to know that it’s part of the clearing process

Hi Lynn,
I had never heard of this before so checked my chart. It says Imum Coeli Sagittarius 18°10’49. Now, could you give me a nutshell version of the meaning, or would that not be possible without studying my chart? Thanks

Marianne, the meaning of something like this changes depending on the rest of the chart which is why I don’t post “cookbook” terms (i.e., Mars in Virgo means such and such)on my website. It also depends on what planets are aspecting the IC/MC axis and what the asc/desc axis is like. You could send this in as a free question if you like – just now that I’m backed up with those and it could be a week or two

I too have Gemini Rising, with my Nadir at 25 Leo. So this week’s stationary Saturn is conjunct my Nadir.
What has been fascinating is how this has been a peak period for my career…appreciation from my employer (both in words and pay), recognition from peers and the outside world, satisfaction in my work.
These are all manifestations, traditionally at least, of transiting Saturn conjunct the MC (Midheaven), not the IC (Nadir).
But the polarity of the opposition is in play, it seems.
At the same time, my wife and I are frustrated at finding a new home — and I’m far more frustrated than her. We know where we want to live, and we’re lucky enough to be able to pay for it easily…but we just haven’t found the right one yet.
That frustration, in terms of home, is of course a very typical kind of thing one sees with transiting Saturn conjunct the 4th house cusp.
I remind myself of the old truth: Saturn delays, it does not deny.
Or at least I hope that’s one truth.

Thanks Dave for these thoughts. I view the MC/IC as an axis of energy: we ground in the IC and project into the MC, so really they are deeply connected. I like your statement that Saturn delays, not denies, and my experience has been that if you do the hard work you do get rewarded.
Eventually.

Hi Lynn,
Your statement that we ground in the IC and project into the MC helps put into better perspective my current career peek with transiting Saturn conjunct the IC.
The idea of being grounded is, I believe, at the core of what’s going right for me. That is, I feel more like myself than ever, and I’m the same person at work, say, as I am in my personal life.
And Saturn makes things real.
So, if I feel appreciated, it’s because I’m grounded in myself and I’m seen for who I am.
(Who could ask for anything more?)

I, on the other hand, experiencing the same transit but with Pluto conj. the IC natally, am having to dig through a lot of unintegrated psychic debris in order to be grounded. My MC/IC aspects the upcoming Pluto conj. GC transit too, and I have no idea what that means. All I know is I’m digging really deep to find solid soil.
Thanks for joining us Dave

This is a great article on IC!I know very little about it but no doubt it has a great influence on the persona!
I’d like to ask you to post some link or whatever reference where I can read more about it.All I know is that mine is Capricorn and I’m not sure what does it means having it in IC…..thanks a lot!

I never really understood my chart until I realized I have natal Pluto conjunct IC. Then I saw that the brutality and upset that I was born into was not a mistake. It was a plan.
