The Ethics of Celebrity Profiles

posted by Lynn Hayes | 3:10am Sunday August 10, 2008

I wrote this post a couple of years ago but thought I would repost it in light of comments on the John Edwards story, and for a reminder myself!
Astrologers usually follow a code of ethics in their work, just as most professions do. The National Council for Geocosmic Research, one of the oldest astrological associations, has a code of ethics on their website that includes some of the following standards of practice:

Avoid making statements that could cause harm through confusion, misunderstanding or fear. This includes predicting the client’s death, the death of someone close to them or other disaster.

Make predictions with appropriate qualifying statements, not as final pronouncements. Although our egos would all like to be Nostradamus, it is more helpful to the client to prepare them for a climate of change rather than predict, no matter how accurately, specific events.

Disclose to the public only that information which is publicly available without permission. It is generally thought acceptable to publish birth data which is available in the public records, but when discussing the chart of a third party with a client it is unethical to include personal information that is not in the public domain.

The code of ethics of the American Society of Vedic Astrologers includes a specific reference to the charts of public figures:

Interpretations of the charts of public figures are confined to areas that are considered public domain due to specific achievements or notoriety as revealed in interviews, published documents, or recorded observations. When interpreting charts of public figures, astrologers refrain from making slanderous comments. Information should be presented in a manner that is respectful to the individual whose chart is being discussed.

A reader was concerned that a profile I wrote about Tom Cruise was disrespectful and made assumptions based on my opinions about him, and I really pondered this. I do have a fascination for gossip (Gemini rising in my own chart) and the lives of public figures which fuels the writing of this daily column. My Scorpio Mercury isn’t content to learn the superficial details – I want to understand what motivates people, what makes them tick. In doing so, I am writing about people I admire as well as those I don’t feel respect for and it is often tempting to use the astrological signatures to express criticism of that indidividual.

My greater goal in these pages is not only to explain character traits through the astrological profiles but also to demonstrate the pathways that each individual can follow to maximize the potential found in their birthchart and take advantage of the gifts and challenges that have been given to them in order to achieve greater wisdom and self-understanding. If I fall into the gutter and miss the mark, I expect you all to let me know!!

Thanks for your comments. It’s a tricky road to walk, because in private practice I would never discuss someone’s chart with others and certainly never use it to criticize. The ability to delve into the psyche of a person in the public view must be utilized carefully in my ever so humble opinion, and always for the highest good

You’re doing a very good job of that in my opinion. And your ethics is this regard are very high compared to what is printed about all kinds of folks in the public eye.

Anyone who counsels other beings is always walking that line. Whenever someone asks my thoughts on their chart, I do my very best to give them good useful information without straying too far either negetive or overly optimistic

Lynn — I noted the changes downstairs, and must say two things: (1) I think I may have been harsher toward your post than I should have been in comments, and (2) your integrity is impressive.
I only recently stumbled upon this blog (literally, via StumbleUpon), and immediately bookmarked it with the slew of blogs I check every day. Looking forward to having time to noodle through the archives, too.

The late circus promoter P.T. Barnum once said: “There’s a sucker born every minute” and astrologer Lynn Hayes truly understands that statement, in my view, after reading her latest thoughts on celebrities and astrology.
I find it absolutely laughable that, after Ms. Hayes did her recent emotionally biased, hatchet job article on John Edwards that she’s now comes up with another posting, called “The Ethics of Celebrity Profiles.”
This is a scrawny attempt (on her part?) to somehow justify her negative article on Edwards, by hiding behind the “skirt” of a major national astrology group ? (i.e. the National Council of Geocosmic Research) or getting their “Good-Housekeeping” seal of approval ? LOL
I’ve certainly got no beefs with the NGCR or their code of ethics, as they seem like a very professional organization. That said, just because an editorial article hasn’t violated their code of ethics doesn’t mean that your article is “sound” astrology, either?
At the end of the day, nobody cares less if the astrologer has got natal Gemini rising or natal Mercury in Scorpio, or, if YOU feel you’re “thorough” or witty or whatever ? Because, it’s not what YOU (the astrologer) thinks that validates astrological thinking, but what the public thinks of US (as astrologers?) that’s more important, especially if you volunteer to take on the often double-edged sword of commenting on the charts of celebrities ?
In some ways, I can understand why female astrologers feel betrayed by Edwards, because they got sucked in by Edward’s charm and then, naively believing that he was a “good soul” and “sympathetic to the needy” and then, he turns around and “boinks” one of you MILF’s ?
But again, adherence to the NGCR (or Vedic) code of ethics doesn’t mean a lot or even mask your personal dislike for Edwards and upper-middle class men, in general ?
Instead of focusing your analysis on Edwards’s stellium of Gemini planets, (which, again, was hardly thorough) it would have been more useful to tell us where do you think Edward’s political career will be headed, based on his Secondary and Solar arc progressions and basic transits to his natal planets ?
For example, is John Edwards, as a result of his tryst with a female former videographer in his entourage, now a “political lemming” ? Is his political career “finished” and, is there an astrological basis to determine that ?
In my opinion, astrologers fare much better at “bashing” celebrities, than they are at predicting the future for them ?
Is it because most astrologers can’t put their money where their mouth is, or are they “too busy” doing charts for clients ? (a favorite excuse used by astrologers when they simply don’t have the time to do things properly or thoroughly ?)
Back in February of 2004, I did a commentary on John Edward’s natal chart on Astrodatabank dot com.
I mentioned that Edwards (in my opinion) did not have the chart of a person suitable for President of the United States, because he would have a difficult time earning the “trust” of the conservative establishment, and also, the voting public, in general ?
This assertion is based on his natal Uranus in his 1st house, squaring his natal Neptune and Saturn in the 4th house. Since Neptune co-rules Edward’s Pisces Midheaven (and the natal Midheaven represents one’s reputation in the community), I predicted that Edwards would have a difficult time reconciling his need for expressing complete freedom and individuality (Uranus) with the demands (and restrictions) of public office, as symbolized by the natal 10th house ?
His natal Saturn in Libra is conjunct Neptune in Libra, in his natal 4th house. When the career marker in found in the natal 4th house, this suggests that Edward’s insistence on building a grassroot network of political supporters will prevent him and his entire political ship from sinking into the abyss ?
His greatest political influence (in my opinion) will be felt at the State or municipal level, as opposed to a “national” level ? When Neptune is conjunct natal Saturn, there is always some exageration of importance or a distortion of reality with one’s ambitions or, a restriction (or limitation) of one’s political influence ?
Making a career out of feeding or housing the poor or hungry, or sacrificing personal ambition, to promote some higher cause (such as poverty?) would be a worthy goal for Edwards ? Saturn and Neptune configurations often “deny” the ego, in my experience, so returning back to the community to serve others would be a wise move for Edwards?
Since transiting Uranus is very closely conjunct to his Mid-heaven, that would signify the scandal currently affecting his whole reputation and career at this time?
The main problem with Edwards is that, with his natal Mars and other major planets in his natal 12th house, I predicted (back in 2004) that he would be a difficult person to get to know and therefore, the American public should not be too quick to embrace him as a politician or even as a rising star, since there are too many unknowns about him that we may not find favorable, as natal planets in the 12th house often distort or mask a politician’s true intentions ?
I am forecasting a political comeback for Edwards, but with a totally new (and more humbler?) agenda.

My intention in writing the profile of Edwards was to illustrate how a preponderance of Gemini planets can explain his lack of focus in his political career. I rarely dabble in predictions and find that more of an ego game than anything that is very useful. In my practice I work with clients to help them to understand the psychological issues that motivate them rather than tell them what their future holds. I find it odd, RJ, that if you are a professional astrologer as you claim that you would come to another astrologer’s sandbox and bash them with such impugnity. If you don’t like it here, feel free not to visit again. The rest of us prefer to engage in dialogue that is helpful and useful and which builds community.

RJ why are you so angry, proving all points why Lynn Hayes does this and that, and yet you do same….and just some free info for you NO ONE CAN PREDICT THE FUTURE as ENERGY IS ALWAYS IN MOTION INTER-ACTING our thoughts with those of others and WE CAN CHANGE OUR DESTINIES WHENEVER WE WANT through our thoughts. If you were spiritually connected, you would already know this, plus there was a very powerful 08.08.2008 message from Archangel Uriel explaining this to all those vibrating high enough to hear. As I tried to convey politely in my initial email, and will repeat here, hoping your fingers will reach the DIVINE DELETE button, we do not need your free NEGATIVE advertising here on Lynn’s website hoping to make this blog a controversial boxing ring. Please feel free to create your own website, your own blog and attract those people who reflect your own energy. I wish you well http://www.wowzone.com

Oh dear! Isn’t THAT nice!?
While I don’t agree with Lynn on the current Democratic presidential presumptive nominee, I do respect her astrological skills and her honesty.
I’m on the outside of professional astrology, just an ethusiastic amateur, the sight of professional jealousy rearing its head here is not very edifying, I must say, rj.
Prediction aside (I find it of very little value in the long run) what Lynn and other astrologers do in using charts of well known characters to show astrology at work is one of the most valuable things anyone can do to demonstrate astrology’s validity. For me, that is front and center in my mind in whatever I write, and I have the utmost appreciation for others who do the same.

Someone needs to review the Rules of Conduct. I must say that the above is a crude comment that would have been zapped if this were my blog. I’m known for holding unpopular opinions and riling people up about popular misconceptions, but at least I don’t commit ad hominem attacks. And to use the acronym MILF to refer to Lynn and/or other female astrologers is incredibly disrespectful and I hope it doesn’t occur again.

My intention in writing the profile of Edwards was to illustrate how a preponderance of Gemini planets can explain his lack of focus in his political career.
Since YOU claim to be a “professional” astrologer, I was looking for a FAR more in-depth and thorough astrological analysis of the chart of John Edwards and his falling political career, than what you gave us ?
I am not “angry” about you (or anyone), so please get that idea out of your head ! I have never met you, for openers, (or even heard of you, prior to this article,) so how could I possibly be angry at someone I have never met before?
However, in your article, you did come across as very negative and angry at John Edwards and this negativity was unjustified, in my opinion ? When so-called professional astrologers start to simplify complex life situations by using the “Sun-Signs” for answers on human behaviour, it makes a mockery of the art-science of astrology and also, natal chart interpretations, in general ?
Basically, what you are doing is reducing or reverting our craft to the “Linda Goodman era” of cookbook astrology, which shows a horrible regression of thinking in current psychological-need astrology ?
It’s also ridiculous that you are lambasting Edwards for being a “superficial” Gemini, and yet, your analysis of him is also superficial ? It guess it figures that you claim you have Gemini rising, natally, since Gemini, according to your article, is unable to provide thorough in-depth answers to complex issues and they have a changeable, immature approach to life, right ?
Maybe you are embarrassed that another astrologer has pointed out your shortcomings and lack of experience in political astrology (and you might well be an otherwise capable natal chart astrologer). However, reverting political astrology back to the days of Sun-Signs seems very amateurish and a step in the wrong direction, in my view?
Meanwhile, telling me to “go away” on a public forum that I have every right to visit (and express my opinion) is clearly beyond your purvue and it shows a “darker” side to your natal Mercury in Scorpio, (i.e. a need to control and manipulate others ?)as well as a stubborness and inability to accept valid criticism and feedback from others.

Individuals like this one seem to be VERY unhappy about something AND they also want lots of attention. There is a certain meanness, or acridness, in the writing – very unusual tone on Lynn’s Blog, this one. Of course there are many perspectives to consider; however, in a kind or professional way would bring more acceptance to the getting the point across.
Lynn – You continue to share wonderful insight. Thank you.
