Many writers, including me, have expressed concern over the presence of major and challenging planetary cycles occurring on Election Day. However, we have primarily looked at the astrology of the day with a broad brush approach. If we zoom in a little closer we see a very nice combination of aspects.
Today, leading up to the election the Moon is in Capricorn, heading towards a conjunction to Jupiter. There will be a sense of responsiblity and duty with the Moon in Capricorn, and the combination with Jupiter suggests that an overarching feeling of optimism will take over, particularly towards 6:00 pm when the Moon/Jupiter conjunction is at its peak.
The conjunction of the Moon to Jupiter in Capricorn makes a trine to Saturn in Virgo and a sextile to Uranus in Pisces. These are harmonious aspects, which suggest that the optimism and positivity of the Moon/Jupiter combination will soften the potentially disruptive effect of the Saturn/Uranus opposition in which the structures of our world (Saturn) are challenged by the need of Uranus to effect change where change is needed.
Another aspect of concern on Election Day has been a square from Mars to Neptune which is particularly interesting because Mars squares Neptune in the US chart. Neptune erodes the power of Mars and sends its energy underground where it can erupt in weird ways – Neptune confuses the issues and deception can run rampant. However, the current square from Mars to Neptune interacts with the square in the US chart with a combination of harmonious and challenging aspects. (Warning: Geeky astrological details ahead. Mars on Election Day is at 21 Scorpio where it forms a nearly exact sextile to Neptune in the US chart and an exact quincunx to Mars in the US chart, and Neptune on Election Day is at 21 Aquarius where it forms an exact trine to Mars in the US chart and quincunx to the US Neptune)
Many astrologers have expressed concern about the change of direction of Neptune just days before the election as an event that would bring deception. This is a very simplistic way of looking at Neptune’s effect. When traveling retrograde (meaning it appears to be moving backwards from our perspective on earth), Neptune encourages us to leave our logic behind and work from instinct – to become more attuned with the subtler aspects of our life and to attain an experience of the divine. If we are not walking the higher path of Neptune, it’s true that we will encounter its lower path which is deception and illusion. Neptune is more powerful now, which can serve us for good or for ill. We are more prone to deception and not seeing things clearly, but we are also more idealistic and better able to envision the future of the world in which we live. The fact that Neptune is squared to Mars at this time accentuates this and makes it even more important that we see clearly with our true Heart, and not just with our fantasies and illusions.
Stressful aspects are difficult but they inspire change; harmonious aspects promote ease but also complacency. A combination like this is ideal because the harmonious aspects facilitate and lubricate the adjustment and transformation that the challenging aspects require.
The Scorpio Sun on Election Day forms a trine to the Cancer Sun in the US chart, offering an opportunity for the soul of the nation to shine and become illuminated. We don’t usually notice these short-lived planetary cycles, particularly when they are of the harmonious variety, but in an electional chart the trine of the Sun to the Sun is very significant and favorable. The Sun in a national chart also represents its leader, or figurehead so this is a very beneficial planetary event for Election Day.
We also see Venus making an exact trine to Chiron in the US chart. The US Chiron is in Aries the fourth house, the house that represents the affairs of the populace and the national pride. The United States is famously a melting pot, and since its inception we have seen an influx of people from Africa, Asia, Europe, Indigenous Americans – all longing to feel at home and safe (fourth house) in their new country. But this has been a painful (Chiron) battle that has required violent confrontation (Aries) which is still going on as evidenced by the voice of Sarah Palin telling white voters in the Heartland of the country that only THEY are the Real Americans. The trine of Venus to this sensitive point may show the potential for healing of these wounds on Election Day.
Still, we do have some planetary aspects of uncertainty. Mercury changes signs at about 11:30 am Eastern that day from Libra where there is more of a collaborative process, to Scorpio where our opinions intensify and harden. This could signify that some people will decide not to vote. It also suggests that ballots (Mercury) could become lost (Scorpio) leading to voting problems.
Overall though, it’s not as bad as you might have heard so don’t drink the doom and gloom Kool Aid. There is tremendous potential for evolution here. Seize the day! And don’t forget to vote.
Thanks to Jill for this video in support of Barack Obama.

I thought that on 11/4/08 the moon is void-of-course from 1:47am-7:01pm EST. Isn’t the Moon-Jupiter conjunction at 5:22 pm on 11/3/08, aren’t and the lunar aspects to Saturn and Uranus on Monday 11/3, as well?

Well, of course there will be deception and illusion! It’s an election.

Isn’t the Moon-Jupiter conjunction at 5:22 pm on 11/3/08, aren’t and the lunar aspects to Saturn and Uranus on Monday 11/3, as well? Thanks David, the lunar aspects are indeed today and I meant to say in the post that these are leading up to the election.
Regarding the Moon Void of Course, it has been my experience that this does not have any real meaning for us in prediction. You may remember that Obama announced his candidacy while the Moon was void of course and yet he won the primary. Others may argue, but I have not found the VOC Moon to have much if any relevancy.

Hey Lynn,
I love your blog, but I have to disagree with you on the VOC Moon. Obama announced under the VOC and winning the primary isn’t winning the election. Unexpected results… not always bad, but not usually what you think will happen.
And when did Sarah Palin say that only white, heartland Americans were REAL? I’ve been living under a self imposed news blackout (I can’t take any more election coverage… get it over already!) but I’m still a bit tuned in. Hadn’t heard that one.
Whatever happens tomorrow, I only hope that Americans vote, and that the right person for the job wins the election… the one we’ll need in the middle of the night when an international incident is brewing…
Take care,
Sue

Hi Sue – welcome aboard!
Re VOC Moon – you might be interested in this earlier article: http://blog.beliefnet.com/astrologicalmusings/2007/06/more-on-the-void-of-course-moo.html
I would love a news blackout, but I am living in a house of political obsession. Hopefully after the election we’ll start doing something besides watching MSNBC. Re Sarah Palin and the Real America, she didn’t say specifically that white America was the real America, but since she was talking to all-white audiences saying “You are the Real America,” the inference was made and she actually apologized for it.
Let the will of the gods be done.

Just to say it is election day and I have sent in my absentee ballot from UK to NY! I am for Obama and feel we need major healing. Living here at the moment married to a Brit has been an eye opener to say the least. For our sake our future kids and present ones we do need change fairness and some one to slowly bring America back on its own 2 feet! I am proud to be a New Yorker -American!! Let us all get out there to Vote today!!

Hi Lynn,
Re VOC. I was once ‘musing’ with a colleague (who is an expert horary astrologer) about the fact that after months of ups, downs and wrangling, our estate agent (realtor) had put in the call to our buyer on a VOC Moon to say we accept the offer and the house is off teh market. (I would have asked him to wait until it had moved into the next sign!)
‘Oh my gosh,it’s all going to go wrong’ I wailed.
‘Don’t worry’ she said. This is the end of the process, where else would you expect the Moon to be but at the end of sign making no further aspects (ergo no further problems)?!
Lesson learned. It all went ahead like cutting through butter.
The Moon actually makes a last aspect to Mercury (a square) but never completes it as Mercury changes signs. As Mercury is John McCain (virgo) and the Moon, the public, I think all hope has to be lost for him once Mercury changes – and the Moon into Aquarius seals the change but I’m still holding my breath on this momentous day in history – globally!
07.52 Chicago time (Moon VOC Asc bang on his MC) on my TV screen with time at bottom, Barack has just voted – it is the end of the matter for him He’s going to be President

Lynn, Sarah Palin did NOT tell only white voters ANYthing! Now, you are making her out to be a racist! How dare you ‘interpret’ astrology to feed your own narcissistic needs – and in such a Scorpionic ‘slash and burn’ fashion! Neptune is showing your own delusions.
It is very deceiptful to translate astrological aspects with your own very obvious interest in seeing Obama elected – (which by the way, hasn’t happened yet). Should he win, people will wake up within 6 months and smell the Neptune.
“Shame on you, Barack Obama!” – Hillary Clinton.
Just because there seems to be a mass hypnosis regarding Obama, and the fact that he seems to be excellent at performance art, does not mean that he would make a good president – especially when he does not have the substance or experience of some of the other candidates. Yes, we should follow our gut and our heart; but let’s not forget our brains, shall we?
I don’t see leadership in this guy. I don’t like his associations and the fact that he continues to lie about them:
1. Rev Wright – ‘god DAMN America’ etc.
2. Tony Resco, the real estate slumlord conviceted of fraud and Obama’s little beneficial transaction with him. Obama came out of the Chicago machine; this is not always a great thing.
3. Rashid Kalidi, an advisor to the PLO in the 1980s and was a professor at the University of Chicago at the same time Obama taught there. Rashid Khalid has called Israel an “apartheid system in creation” and a destructive “racist” state.
Obama wants to put in all of these programs – and of Course, they are not going to cost us anything.
4. Yet, he is going to “lower” taxes! No, we need LESS govt and lower taxes. He wants to raise capital gains tax and when Hoover did that, everything went to Hell. Remember reading about the ‘little Hoovervilles’? When Truman lowered the capital gains tax, then the tooth fairy had X-tra goodies to give. (He’s also very cheap. He gave a about 1% of his money to charity last year, after having made millions off of his book. Yes, he’s going to spread our money around.
5. I really believe that this guy (who would naively sit down with terrorist ‘leaders’) and is in need of such approval – (I think due to his over-riding father complex – a la George Bush), that he will say and do some very dangerous things.
6. There’s been funny stuff with his birth certificate and a previous Attorney General of PA. is currently going before the Supreme Court to prove that consitutionally, Obama may have no right to even run.
7. WHY won’t he release his health records (one page from a doctor, stating that he is in good health, is not sufficient for a presidential candidate), or any records after Columbia University? Is it possible that at one point, he listed himself as being from somewhere else on a form? We won’t know unless he is forthcoming about everything, which is not bloody likely.
He is saying that he will lower taxes. Believe me – not even close. I remember when Clinton ran and said the same thing. My sister was such a fan and then after he was elected, she found herself in a 40% bracket! She was so pissed.
This guy is still wet behind the ears (or as he misquoted ‘green behind the ears’ at a debate and no one corrected him). He would have people think that McCain is playing the race card when he Never was! That’s really a dirty thing to accuse someone of.
I didn’t like what he said in PA about ‘those people there who are bitter and cling to their guns and religion’.
He keeps changing what he says he is going to do.
He will not admit that the surge is what is working (My brother, who is a Marine, has told me this, as well.)
Then, there’s that little thing that we just found out about his aunt – his aunt who is here illegally and was put on a deportation list 2 years ago – but continues to live in subsidized public housing! He first said that he didn’t know she was here. (His father’s sister and he doesn’t know she is here?) But then it was found out, that she attended his swearing in cermemony and has been contributing to his campaign.
He does not have as much experience as Palin, by ANY means. Can you imagine, someone who has the guts to go up against their own party, go up against the oil companies (and win both of those), etc… I think that speaks well for her fight against corruption. How many politicians can we say that about?!
His V.P. candidate is a loose cannon but said the other day, something that I myself, have been thinking – which is that within the first 6 months, ‘he will be tested by an international crisis within his first six months in power…mark my words…” I don’t want to be tested and I don’t think that the terrorists would so easily pull something like this with that feisy little Scott.
It does not speak well for Obama that the Hezbollah, Hamas and Ahmadinnerjacket are hoping like hell that ‘the big O’ gets in.
I’m not interested in his spreading my ‘wealth’ around (if I ever get any, that is). Many people hate the rich but don’t realise that they are paying 70% of taxes, while the rest pay 2% or none.
If anyone would roll up their sleeves for this country, it would be McCaine and Palin.
I very much would have loved Ron Paul and would have voted for him, had he had 1/2 of a chance. Hey! Did you know that Alan Keyes is on the ballot? I didn’t even know that he was running. I thought he was great last time!
Well, these are going to be very interesting days…. Switzerland sounds good.

Reagan, seriously, the astrological issues in front of us are far greater than who gets picked president of the united states. I might want my candidate to win and would be horrified if the other one wins, but the truth is that no matter who is president, what is coming down the pike is not going to be pretty. Frankly, a Neptune aspect is a day in the country compared to the T crosses and oppositions and pluto move into cap and crossing 0 degrees…and The Federal Reserve’s chart with a 1 degree Cap Sun…. oh, the list is endless.

Reagan, give me a break. You are so close-minded until it is almost pathetic. You are entitled to your own views, but come on. Palin is a dumb “Brunette” and does not have enough education. McCain is just to old and not to mention not that educated as well. Yes, he does has military experience, SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!?????????????
