A look ahead to Tuesday’s eclipse

posted by Lynn Hayes | 7:30pm Thursday July 16, 2009

I’ll be writing more about the eclipse in the next day or two, and I’ll be discussing it on my radio show Sunday morning.  (Look!  Beliefnet gave me a box for my radio show in the sidebar.)

But for now I’ll post Jessica Murray’s excellent article from her blog, and thank you David Crook for the link.  Jessica writes:

All New Moons mark a beginning. They are great for timing prayers and rituals, per the ancient premise that declaring our intentions at the start of a cycle determines how the rest of that cycle will play out. This summer’s Big Beginning was the June New Moon that served as the template for the whole season. July’s New Moon is sort of a back-up beginning, giving us a shot at incorporating what we didn’t know at the Solstice… but we do know now.

The July 21st Eclipse has extra power for other reasons, too. Because of its unusual proximity to the lunar nodes, mundane astrologers expect more from it (especially in Asia, which receives its arc of visibility). And it is the longest Eclipse so far this century.

This is not a prompt to duck under the covers and hide. I do hope we have banished from our worldviews that kind of superstitious thinking; although astrologers ourselves tend to lapse into it especially where eclipses are concerned. We may joke, “Oh man, I’m staying in bed that day” with an apologetic giggle that signals we know it’s a cop-out to make bogeymen out of planetary configurations.

This eclipse has the potential to bring some surprising new developments since it forms a trine to Uranus.  As I told a client today, it’s not the planetary transits that give us trouble – it’s our resistance to the change that the planets want to create in our lives.

Neptune in Pisces and the question of reality
Neptune just slipped back into Pisces where it will remain until 2025.  Neptune's role in the astrological pantheon is to cause us to question where the physical world ends and a more transcendent reality begins.  It therefore rules our spiritual experience, but it can also be confusing and induce

Look forward to hearing more in your column about the eclipse. I’m quite excited about this one for several reasons:
Perigee – closest new moon of the year – 222,000 miles occurs just 6 hours before the max eclipse creating a Super New Moon
Quincunx with the Aquarian stellium and trine to Uranus
South Node/Pluto quincunx
Path of totality passes over areas that have experienced intense Pluto like experiences – including Bhopal in India (toxic gas explosion), Iwa Jima (WW II) and the Marshall Islands (atomic bomb testing). Also totality passes just south of Mount Everest and thru Bhutan and Tibet – quite a sacred path.
Eclipse effect starting to trigger Earth tetonic events: 7/15 a 7.6 earthquake near New Zealand’s south island.
It is the longest eclipse of this century – next one to exceed 6 min 39 sec occurs in 2132.
Same saros cycle as the July 11, 1991 eclipse over Hawaii/Baja
Here in Hawaii we plan to be at the summit of Mauna Kea for sunset. Maximum eclipse here is at 5:40 p with 15 % of Sun covered.
At sunrise in India, first contact at 5:01 p PST. Last or 4th contact at sunset in the Eastern Pacific at 10:09 p PST.
Great animations of eclipse and partial lunar in August

Not meaning to sound overly dramatic, this eclipse will be the most significant of the past 2000 years. Anyone able to see it should do so. The eclipse forms the closing chapter of a story that began with Comet Lulin, and occurs 40 years after the first human landing on the moon. The number 4 is significant, and observers should watch out for some way that the number may be “encoded” in the eclipse. It may be the formation of coronal streamers, prominences, star alignments, etc. Most telling and spectacular of all would be a visible involvement of one of the “sungrazing” Kreutz comets. In short, don’t miss it, and be sure to report upon it. There are things the eye can see that may be difficult to capture by camera.

I’m really excited to see how this all pans out. I have been someone who is resistant to change, out of fear..I’ve made alot of changes. I’ve really surprised myself!
