Notes for my guinea pigs on interpreting the Saturn Uranus opposition

by Lynn Hayes

Many people volunteered to be guiinea pigs for an analysis of how the Saturn/Uranus opposition affects the charts of individuals. Some of my eager volunteers do not actually have Saturn or Uranus affecting their charts and so with apologies, your charts will not be used for this experiment. I'm going to limit my comments specifically to the effect of the Saturn/Uranus opposition.

--------------------------------------

Diane has Uranus ascending in her chart in the first house of personal identity, and it is exactly trine her Sun in Aquarius.  This is a "double whammy" that tells us that the Uranian qualities of innovation and eccentricity are a powerful force in her life.  So when the opposition comes along and squares Uranus in her chart she may not even notice it except that she will feel more independent and eager to do new things than usual.  The Saturn influence, demanding solitude and hard work, will be more difficult and create restrictions that could be uncomfortable because she has very little earth in her chart to hold her down to the material world.  She will be required under this cycle to find balance between practicality and routine and her desire to flee restriction and confinement.

--------------------------------------

Tamara is also affected by the opposition which will reflect one of the central themes in her chart.  She has a Taurus Sun and is therefore very security minded, but she has Mars in Gemini which has a thirst for freedom and new experiences.  That Mars is trine Jupiter in her chart, which expands (Jupiter) her drive and instills independence and a need for freedom.  But Pluto squares Mars, which makes it difficult for her to feel that it's safe to have those expansive experiences.

The opposition will harmonize with her Sun, and that will help her to better integrate the structure and restriction (Saturn) with the pressure to react and rebel (Uranus).  But both planets will form a square to that Mars/Pluto square in her chart and force her to achieve greater balance and express her Mars more fully by letting herself be free.

--------------------------------------

Duse, the opposition doesn't aspect planets in your chart; although Saturn will oppose your Sun later in the year it won't be opposing Uranus at that time, so let's save your chart to review when we talk about the Cardinal Climax later this year (remind me).

--------------------------------------
Jeanne B has Saturn at 28 Capricorn and the Sun at 28 Gemini, so transiting Saturn will square her Sun at the same time it make a harmonious trine to Saturn in her chart.  Saturn trines are marvelous times for focus and achievement, but that challenging aspect from Saturn to her Sun, especially in Gemini which doesn't like to be tied down, will tend to restrict her and cause her to feel somewhat shackled.

Uranus will exacerbate this by a challenging square to her Sun which begin to rock her boat and urge her to do something new.  At the same time, though, it will be in a harmonious aspect to Saturn and therefore can assist her in creating structures in her life to support that change.

Unless I'm missing something, Saturn and Uranus will not be aspecting Jeanne's Mars and Uranus in Leo.  Fortunately for her!  The best thing Jeanne can do is to realize the tug of war that is occurring between the need to apply discipline and structure to her life and the need to blow up the status quo.  If she can try to balance it rather than swing from one end to another, she will be ahead of the game.

--------------------------------------

.Melda, greetings to South Africa!  However,  I wonder if you have had charts calculated by Vedic astrologers, because under the Western system you have the Sun in Virgo.  In any case your chart is not aspected by the opposition of Saturn and Uranus so let's save yours for another day.
--------------------------------------

Daun, the opposition of Saturn and Uranus will have a profound effect on you.  Saturn in your birthchart sits right on the North Node, signifying the future direction of your evolutionary journey.  This tells us that even though you have four planets in Libra and relationships are a huge part of your life (though challenging!), your destiny (North Node) is to become successful in managing life on the material plane.  This is assisted by your Capricorn ascendant, which is ruled by Saturn and shares Saturn's focus on discipline and hard work.

You will soon have your second Saturn Return (don't worry, it will be MUCH easier than your first at at 28-30!!).  And Uranus will be opposing Saturn at the time of your Saturn Return which ought to be quite exciting!  You will likely experience that tension between Saturn and Uranus at a deep level and you will likely feel the need to change the direction of your life in some way.

--------------------------------------

And that's all we have time for, unfortunately  Thanks for playing Stump the Astrologer. :)

Skywatch for August is posted

by Lynn Hayes

I've posted the monthly Skywatch article which you can read here in its entirety.

Here is a tidbit reporting on the astrological cycles for the first few days of the month:

On the first day of August Venus has just entered the emotional and nurturing sign of Cancer and this alters somewhat our perspectives of our relationship to others and to the world in general for the next few weeks. Venus describes the way we connect to our outer world, and in Cancer there is a protective instinct and a sensitivity to the plight of the world around us. This will be particularly powerful on the first of the month when Venus forms a challenging opposition to Pluto. Our awareness of our connections to others is deepened for a day or two, and it is no longer satisfying to relate on a superficial level. This short-lived transit has the potential to uncover problems in our relationships that may have previously been hidden.

On the 2nd, Mercury (communication and learning) enters its own sign of Virgo, and for the next few weeks we have a greater ability to focus on the details and create order in our lives. This is particularly true on the 3rd when Mercury forms a harmonious trine to Pluto and is able to harmonize with Pluto's laserlike focus and intensity.

You may notice that this month I have added Ceres to the pantheon of Skywatch planetary guides. Although I do not usually work with the asteroids in consultations, when Ceres was reclassified along with Pluto I started to incorporate her into client charts to see if she would begin talking to me. I feel I have a better understanding of her now and will begin including her in both the Daily and Monthly Skywatch articles.

Ceres enters Libra on August 3. In my view, Ceres acts as the "higher octave" of the Moon. Where the Moon signifies our personal emotional experience and the nurture of the individual soul, Ceres has to do with our connection to our life on Planet Earth and how well we nurture that experience. It has a more transpersonal flavor and tells us that our family is a global one and not just an individual tribe.

Ceres enters Libra on August 3, where it will bring our attention to a greater need to cooperate and build alliances. Poverty and hunger will become more obvious as our eye is turned to the needs of those outside of our immediate community.

Astrologer is suspect in husband's murder

by Lynn Hayes

Phillips--LG1.jpg
A news report reveals that Pamela Phillips, founder of the now-defunct Starbabies website, may have to go on trial as a suspect in the murder of her ex-husband, Arizona real estate developer Gary Lee Triano, in Aspen back in 1996.  Investigators believe that Phillips paid Ronald Young $400,000 to murder Triano in anticipation of a $2  million life insurance payout.  Phillips has disappeared and has not cooperated with the investigation.

The "Dateline" program aired a show about the case on Monday night this week and claims that they found Phillips in Switzerland. The Aspen home that she bought with the insurance proceeds is under foreclosure, and she has been profiled on the television program "America's Most Wanted."
 .
The case goes to trial in November of this year.  Now THAT's a profile I would really like to do, if I could find a date of birth!

How to interpret the opposition of Saturn and Uranus

by Lynn Hayes

7art-zodiac-clock-screensaver-739.jpg
Marco, a new reader, writes: " I was looking for more information re: the saturn/uranus opposition and found you. However, what I was seeking was a more specific study of the impact of this phenomenon as it comes in contact (particularly through opposition/conjunction) with major planets in an individual chart. What is the impact of this duality when it squeezes native Jupiter, say, in its axis? Hope you'll take up the challenge for us."

When I began studying astrology and doing charts, one of my bibles was Sakoian and Acker's The Astrologer's Handbook.  This is, in my opinion, one of the best and most comprehensive "cookbooks" for astrological aspects in the chart.  My bible for looking at planetary transits was and still is Rob Hand's Planets in Transit,a masterwork of cookbook interpretations for every planet (Chiron is not included, this book was published the year before Chiron's discovery).  I still learn something when I read an interpretation from Rob's book.  An online cookbook that I find has excellent interpretations is the database on the Astrology Weekly website

An astrology "cookbook" is a compendium of explanations for any individual astrological phenomenon. For example, when the Sun conjuncts the Moon in the natal chart, taken by itself, denotes someone whose conscious mind and sense of Self (Sun) is fused with the emotional nature and sensitive side of the individual (Moon), but it can be difficult for the individual to gain perspective over their life because their perception is colored so greatly by their emotions. How we interpret this depends a great deal on the rest of the chart, and whether the Sun or the Moon is stronger.  If the Sun is stronger, (say with the Sun and Moon in fire signs),  this person will be focused more on individuation.  If the Moon is stronger (say the Sun/Moon conjunction is in Cancer), the focus will be more on integrating the emotions.

The problem with cookbooks is that while they are excellent for beginners to learn some of the ways that the planets interact with each other, the problem is that this single interpretation only tells part of the story and depending on the chart, it may be a very small part of the story.  This is why computerized astrology reports can only go so far.  Let's take that Sun/Moon conjunction, but let's put them in the airy sign of Aquarius, where there is a more rational approach to the emotions and to life in general.  The picture now is of an individual who is more remote by nature which gives them a greater sense of perspective from their emotions than they would be with the Sun and Moon in watery Pisces, which seeks to lose itself in the realm of emotions and transcendence.  Add to this Aquarian Sun/Moon conjunction a square from Mars in Scorpio, and you get a person whose assertiveness (Mars) becomes very emotional and creates a conflict between the intensity of their passions (Scorpio Mars) and their desire for a more transpersonal experience (Sun/Moon in Aquarius).

Obviously, this kind of depth of interpretation is extremely complicated and takes years to master.  But in the long run, learning to really understand the dynamics of the chart and how they operate and THEN put them together, will better serve the astrology student's ability to accurately interpret a birthchart.

I'm not saying toss out the cookbooks and astrology reports because they're a good place to start.  But consider them like training wheels, and remove them when you're ready to dive deep.

So to answer Marco's question about how the Saturn/Uranus opposition will affect a person when it squares Jupiter in their chart, the answer is, it all depends.  Generally, Saturn creates contraction and restriction, and Uranus creates a rebellious desire for change.  The opposition requires that we find a balance between the two.  Jupiter desires freedom, so the Uranian influence will exacerbate that need for freedom, and Saturn will create pressures to limit the expansion.  Jupiter in this example will be in one of the mutable signs where it tends to have a more passive application.

In the chart of someone with Sagittarius rising and a Leo Sun/Moon conjunction, say, which is a more fiery chart that seeks independence and expression of Self, that Saturn influence will likely feel uncomfortable and the battle between change and stasis will be harder to keep in balance.  But if this individual's Jupiter is in Virgo, where their success and faith (Jupiter) comes through the details of life in a cautious manner (Virgo), that will improve their ability to optimize this transit.  If Jupiter is in Sagittarius, however, it will likely be a struggle.

Put that same transit in the chart of a Virgo with Saturn trine the Sun, with that Virgo Jupiter and you have someone who will find new ways (Uranus) to apply a disciplined approach (Saturn) to the matters of their life.  If this person's Jupiter is in Sag, though, there is already a conflict inherent in the chart between the longing for freedom of the Sag Jupiter with the Virgo need for caution and adherence to details.

So really, it all depends!  This is why I love to do celebrity profiles.  It gives me an opportunity to showcase how astrological interpretation is accomplished, and hopefully add some insight for my readers.  If people are interested, we may want to highlight charts of actual readers for this discussion.

What does astrology tell us about financial markets now?

by Lynn Hayes

The past two weeks have seen a big rally in the US stock market, buoyed most likely by the conjunction of Jupiter (optimism) and Neptune (dreams and illusions).  The presence of Chiron there adds caution to what would otherwise be a much more buoyant grasp at the gold ring with the Jupiter/Neptune alliance.  Chiron reminds us of the wounds recently experienced and helps to keep things a bit under control.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average hit a bottom on July 10 which was the day of the exact conjunction of Jupiter and Neptune, and has risen every day since then. Today Venus, the great Attractor, is in an exact trine to the Triple Conjunction (Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune), and the Moon will jump in, forming a Grand Trine with the Triple Conjunction for much of the day.  There is tremendous optimism in the air today that can overcome any negativity.

Still, it would be foolish to get caught up in an illusory optimism that drives the markets up temporarily until the reality of Pluto in Capricorn steps in.  Pluto turns direct in mid-September, and that will likely mark a return to realism/pessimism.  But even before then Saturn (convention and practicality) will begin again to oppose Uranus (all things new and different) in the latter part of August.  So we will continue to see some ups and downs for some time to come.

Jupiter and Neptune will collide for one final time (this cycle) in November of this year, but at that same time Saturn will be preparing to square Pluto which can be a big challenge.  I would probably not jump into any long term investing yet but it may be an interesting time for a short run.
