Chiron was discovered in the late 1970s, and although many astrologers still seem not to include it in their practice, it has been an important part of my work for over 20 years.
Chiron is an important part of the planetary energy that is taking place right now since it is locked into the
conjunction with Neptune and the soon to be separating Jupiter. You can read more about
the astrological Chiron here. Astrologers sometimes categorize Chiron with the other asteroids: Vesta, Juno, Hygeia, Astraea, and thousands more but Chiron is technically not an asteroid.
Chiron’s astrological qualities include the alchemical transformation of matter into spirit in our own consciousness, and while its irregular orbit can take it anywhere between Jupiter and Neptune it is most commonly found between Saturn and Uranus, bridging the personal planets (through Saturn) and the transpersonal (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto). The alchemical process that Chiron teaches reveals the inner wounds in the body, mind, spirit system and helps to facilitate healing.
Astronomers originally classified Chiron as an asteroid with a strange orbit. But as they observed Chiron they discovered a comet-like tail, and it was reclassified as a comet. Astrologer Zane Stein is widely respected as the astrology world’s expert on the discovery of Chiron. He queried Dr. Marsden, director of the IAU Minor Planet Center on this subject and posts the response on
his website:
Chiron, originally given the very temporary title “Slow-Moving Object Kowal”, was given the provisional minor planet designation 1977 UB. Later it was given the permanent minor planet number and name (2060) Chiron. All along, there were discussions it might be a comet, and definite cometary activity was noticed, at least some of the time, beginning around 1988. The change in the comet-designation system introduced at the beginning of 1995 (and applicable in retrospect), allowed us to modify the provisional designation to P/1977 UB, P/ indicating that it is a short-period comet. This set the scene for giving it a permanent short-period comet number, 95P, which can be combined with the name to give 95P/Chiron. This is probably what it is best called. However, since it WAS previously given a PERMANENT minor-planet number, it ALSO retains the number (2060). So the object is permanently classified as BOTH a comet and a minor planet. There is really no conflict with this. For astrometric purposes and most orbital purposes we continue to call it (2060) Chiron and classify it with the minor planets. For some orbital purposes it can also be 95P/Chiron. For physical purposes the observer can choose which he or she feels is more appropriate. Pholus and the other centaurs have not shown cometary behavior, so they remain only in the minor-planet category. “
To me this is significant, because although Chiron in mythology was half horse and half man, he was NOT one of the Centaurs, a race of hybrid horse-men from Mount Pelion in Greece that were renowned for their brutality and drunken rampages. This is a far cry from the noble suffering of Chiron, whose hybridization occurred because his mother asked Hera to turn her into a mare in a vain attempt to escape the amorous advances of the god Saturn. Unlike the Centaur race, Chiron was half mortal and half immortal, and became famous for his gifts as a healer, musician and teacher.
In both astronomy and mythology, Chiron is a hybrid creature. In astrology, Chiron encourages us to greater awareness of our own hybridization as both a physical creature and a metaphysical one.

I was into astronomy before I got into astrology 8 or 9 years ago.
Can Chiron rule a chart?
For that matter can you talk more about chart rulers and their significance in a person’s everyday life?

Dear Lynn,
Could you tell me what source material you are using on Chiron’s mythology? According to theoi.com — the leading mythology website — it states that Chiron not only was a centaur, but he was King of the Centaurs. Could you clarify this please?

Hi MarAli – The question of chart rulership is one of those things astrologers like to disagree on. Conventional wisdom says that the ruler of the Ascendant rules the chart, but in my view this is too simplistic. Let’s say you have Libra, for the sake of keeping things simple, rising and Venus is said to rule the chart because Venus rules Libra. So Venus is all about love, beauty, etc. But let’s say you have Mars conjunct Pluto in Leo and it is opposed by Saturn in Scorpio. There will be a tremendous intensity of experience in this chart that won’t be reflected by the “rulership” of Venus.
Whether Chiron can rule a chart is a whole different subject that no one will agree on and which raises lots of questions. First of all, what sign does Chiron actually rule? Can an asteroid/comet rule a chart or only traditional planets? This is why I think it’s important to really learn about the different parts of the astrological chart before you learn the “rules.” Rules by themselves are not very helpful in astrological synthesis, IMHO.

Hi,thanks for your comments. In my experience, Chiron seems to rule certain charts, in the sense that those charts would not make much sense, without Chiron being taken into consideration. martine
