Chiron and Kundalini

As many of you know, Chiron has been a specialty of mine for many years and one of the lesser-known roles of Chiron in the birthchart is to reveal the way energy flows in the body.  This energy flow through the energy centers that we call the chakras is called "kundalini," and my friend Greg over at the Occult of Personality podcasts posted an article by Gopi Krishna on his Facebook page today about Kundalini that I thought was particularly relevant to Chiron in the astrological chart:

I am irresistibly led to the conclusion that the human organism is evolving in the direction indicated by mystics and prophets and by men of genius, by the action of this wonderful mechanism, located at the base of the spine, depending for its activity mainly on the energy supplied by the reproductive organs. Though not in its general application as the evolutionary organ in man, but in the individual sphere as the means to develop spirituality, super-normal facilities and psychic powers, the mechanism has been known and manipulated from very ancient times.

When manipulated and roused to intense activity by men already advanced on the path of progress and subject to numerous factors, especially favourable heredity, constitution, mode of conduct, occupation and diet, it can lead to most remarkable and extremely useful results, developing the organism by general stages from its native condition to a state of extraordinary mental efficiency, conducting it ultimately to the zenith of cosmic consciousness and genius combined.

This indeed is Chiron's role - to forge a bridge between the trappings of personality that are the domain of the personal planets, and the transformational work of spiritual evolution and development that are the domain of the transpersonal (or outer) planets.

Barbara Hand Clow wrote about this phenomenon in her book The Liquid Light of Sex, which is rather little about sex and more about the flow of Kundalini energy, and you can read more about it here in my article from last year as well.

Gopi Krishna was born in 1903 to parents of Kashmiri Brahmin extraction. His birthplace was a small village about twenty miles from the city of Srinagar, the summer capital of the Jammu and Kashmir State in northern India. He spent the first eleven years of his life growing up in this beautiful Himalayan valley. In 1914, his family moved to the city of Lahore in the Punjab which, at that time, was a part of British India. Gopi Krishna passed the next nine years completing his public school education. Illness forced him to leave the torrid planes of the Punjab and he returned to the cooler climate of the Kashmir Valley. During the succeeding years, he secured a post in the Department of Public Works of the State, married and raised a family. In 1946 he founded a social organization and, with the help of a few dedicated friends, tried to bring about reforms in some of the outmoded customs of his people. Their goals included the abolition of the dowry system, which subjected the families of brides to severe and even ruinous financial obligations, and the strictures against the remarriage of widows. After a few years, Gopi Krishna was grantedpremature retirement from his position in the government and devoted himself almost exclusively to service work in the community.

In 1967 he published his first major book in India, Kundalini--The Evolutionary Energy in Man(currently available under the title Living With Kundalini). Shortly thereafter it was published in GreatBritain and the United States and has since appeared in eleven major languages. The book presented tothe Western world for the first time a clear and concise autobiographical account of the phenomenon ofthe forceful awakening of Kundalini, which he had experienced in 1937, and the long process by whichhe eventually attained the perennially transformed or sahaja state of consciousness. This book, and thesixteen other published works by Gopi Krishna have generated a steadily growing interest in thesubjects of consciousness and the evolution of the brain. He also traveled extensively in Europe andNorth America, during the last seventeen years of his life, energetically presenting his theories toscientists, scholars, researchers and others. Gopi Krishna's experiences led him to hypothesize that thereis a biological mechanism in the human body, known from ancient times in India as Kundalini, which isresponsible for creativity, genius, psychic abilities, religious and mystical experiences, as well as sometypes of aberrant mental states. He asserted that ignorance of the workings of this evolutionary mechanism was the main reason for the present dangerous state of world. Gopi Krishna passed away inJuly, 1984 of a severe lung infection and is survived by his wife, three children and grandchildren. Thework that he began is currently being carried forward through the efforts of a number of affiliated foundations, organizations and individuals around the world.

Lynn: Couldn't agree with you more about Chiron, it's discovery in 1977 and the ensuing opening of healing to individuals since then. I, too, have studied Barbara Hand Clow's works on Chiron and when I did the flow of energy and the placements of the planets all fell into place. Since it's discovery in 1977 Chiron just can't be left out or ignored in any chart. Also, the association of Chiron with the chakras, as well as sound, practiced through meditation for healing of the wound will heal the soul and body opening up levels of ascension, inflow of truthful information to help others.

I've had so many people come through my life recently in the phase of their Chiron return in the throws of health issues showing up putting the choice of continuing life in this incarnation or leaving. Until the discovery of Chiron that period of 48-50 years old was unanswered - now we see the tremendous significance of Chiron's role in our journey.

Light to all, B'Lyn
