The astrology of Julian Assange: we have a birth date!

posted by Lynn Hayes

Updated 12/2/10  with more chart details. As you may know, on Tuesday the Wikileaks website released hundreds of cablegrams from diplomats in a variety of countries around the world.  The feedback against Julian Assange, founder of Wikileaks, has of course been profound.  In fact, Interpol has just issued a “wanted notice” for Assange for an investigation into his “sex crimes.”  This makes a date of birth available for Assange, something we have been craving since he burst onto the scene.

Assange told Forbes that his next target is Big Business.  In any case, Assange isvirtually single-handedly acting out the planetary drama of Pluto (destruction and revelation of secrets) in Capricorn (governments and Big Business) about to be set off by a square from Uranus (radical revolutionary behavior) in Aries (individual rights).  In fact, right now Uranus is at a virtual standstill and is acting most powerfully, which has stimulated the revolutionary fervor of the Wikileaks action.

Julian Assange astrologyJulian Assange (born July 3, 1971 according to the Interpol documents, time unknown, Townsville Australia) has the Sun in Cancer, with a nearly exact square from the Sun to Uranus which explains his radical tendencies.  People with the Sun in Cancer or with Cancer strong in their charts are extremely sensitive to the needs of others, and as a rule feel the pain in the world far more than the average person.

You can read a quasi-biography of him here in my earlier post; very little is known about his early life but he was used as a model for a work of fiction which reveals some clues.

Chiron is also square to Assange’s Sun, and opposite Uranus – a challenging T-square that necessitates the balancing of a wounded sense of Self (Chiron/Sun) with a tendency towards radical actions (Uranus/Sun).  Mars is in Aquarius, the sign of social justice, and it is locked in a challenging square to Jupiter which suggests an aggrandized drive to instill fairness and equality, whatever the cost.  The troublemaking planet Eris is also locked into this T-square, and while I am not yet using Eris in charts that much she certainly seems to be an important player here.  Briefly, Eris is the new planet that was reclassified along with Pluto and Ceres, and in mythology she was the sister of Aries, god of war, and as goddess of strife and discord, the instigator of the Trojan War.  I like to think of her as describing small events that lead to major cycles of transformation. (Read more about Eris here.)

This chart for Assange also has a Plutonian component with a Scorpio Moon (Scorpio is ruled by Pluto) and with Pluto is in a challenging square to Venus, challenging his relationships and creating difficulty for him in making alliances.  A Plutonian chart tends to live more powerfully and with a greater tendency towards drama and intensity than another chart would.

That Venus is interesting, being in the dual sign of Gemini which makes the square to Pluto that much more problematic.  In this planetary system (Venus/Pluto), Pluto demands that relationships be intense and drive us deep beneath the surface, yet Gemini fears the entrapment of this kind of depth, preferring to be more available to a wide variety of experiences.  Assange has some classic characteristics of the commitment-phobe with a hunger for radically new and diverse experiences (Uranus/Gemini) and the dark and brooding intensity and demand for passion that Pluto and Scorpio engender.

Transiting Saturn has been setting off the T-square system in his chart involving his Sun, Uranus and Chiron over the past couple of months, coinciding with the threat of prosecution over two alleged rapes.  (These charges are widely considered to be trumped-up as a means to get some kind of control over Assange: see this article for one viewpoint.)  A transit of Uranus in opposition to Pluto in his chart is also stirring up the collective rage but also his own passion and transformative force.  And as Chiron points out in the comments, his progressed Mars is conjunct his natal North Node this year, driving him closer to his ultimate destiny.

Wikileaks has been around for a few years but burst into the scene when Jupiter and Uranus entered the individualistic sign of Aries.  For some Assange is a hero, because he is exposing the hypocrisy of governments and business.  For some he is a terrorist, because he operates outside of the boundaries of society and law.  No matter what you think of him, there’s no doubt that he is becoming a major player, and emblematic of the upcoming Uranus/Pluto square over the next few years.

I just go the date today. The Venus to Pluto square bothers me. Deep down, I think Julian is a family man with strong protective energies, and a basic love for humanity as a whole. His Chiron sits on my Solar degree in Aries, so I view him as a hero. I plan to follow his transits. I did horoscopes for the two “victims” in Sweden, and they are barking up the wrong tree. Julian doesn’t belong in jail.

His transits and progressions aren’t too positive. Progressed Moon square to N Mercury, retro progressed Mars sitting on the NN; yes that transiting Saturn just set off that natal T square, transiting Pluto about to form a grand cross to it in a few ( Pluto opposing the Sun is nothing to sneeze at ), T Jupiter Uranus squaring N Venus, T Chiron Neptune squaring to N Jupiter Neptune ( as the mid life crisis transits begin ), and wonderful little quirky aspects like natal black moon lillith and the vertex in opposition natally now being squared by transiting Pluto. Although knowing a time of birth is always beneficial, with such drama on his own planetary stage and without getting wordy, it looks like he’s bought himself a world of hurt.

Sun Opposite Pluto can also bring an intense “one on one” power play. Julian vs. Swedish legal system ? I don’t see anything major coming from that situation. Jupiter and Uranus squaring natal Venus are annoying, can bring monotony, boredom, some awkward social situations.I am more concerned with negative Mars/Uranus aspects. Transiting Mars going through Capricorn, squaring his natal Uranus in Libra could spell trouble around December 20. Having his house placements would definitely help.Sometimes birth certificates will include the time of birth, but short of asking his mother,Christine what time he was born, I imagine we will have to make the best from what we have. :)

Notice please that i did not ascribe possible effects to the transits I’ve noted. I believe I also pointed out a T Pluto opposing the Sun, not the other way around. My own experience with clients often varies quite substantially from the usual ascribed affects as detailed by many astrologers with transits of Pluto to the Sun. Rather than a Phoenix rising from the ashes imagery it is often like a blow torched & naked bird struggling to breath through all the noxious fumes. I have usually seen it in its mildest manifestation as some type of identity crisis for the client/querant. At its worst
( not including death ) it could sweep away everything in a life one holds dear. Certainly physical freedom fits into that category, since this is the traditional aspect of conflict with authority, and a period of incarceration as an affect would not be so far fetched.
The T Uranus squaring Venus, aside from a classic manifestation of estranged relationships, especially with Jupiter thrown into the mix adds elements of strange sexual desires. It is not unusual to find Natal aspects with this mix in the chart of gay males ( me included). As a transit and with Jupiter along for the ride, kinky sexual escapades leading to misunderstandings also fits the bill, thank you very much.
Yes you are correct that T Mars will have an impact. When I am trying to be succinct ( not always an easy target ) I avoid dwelling on the transits of the inner planets since the transits themselves last days at the most. However in his case Mars hits a number of triggers. As we speak it is squaring off to natal Pluto and opposing natal Venus which explains the arrest warrant and may lead him to additional legal processes. The Mars Uranus playbill won’t help. A flight attempt is not out of the question. But for me the Martian coup de gras comes with T Mars opposing the Sun along with the Uranian linkage. He needs to watch his back, his front, all the other parts and not turn the ignition on in his car.
Don’t overlook the impact of the P Mars conjuncting the North Node opposing the South Node. This is a karmic ‘life lesson’ that translates into psychological scabble. The Vedics confer the title of ‘the point of self undoing’ to the SN and that aspect has been in play for a bit.
Aspects not mentioned previously include a Progressed Yod set up by the P Moon inconjuncting both N Pluto and N Jupiter. His mindset won’t help his political situation. The T NN inconjucts Saturn, and that Pluto square to Lillith fascinates me since the ‘black moon’ can represent the dark side of guilt, shame, hatred, envy, and vengefulness. This is the not so good inner stuff we keep under wraps. It can manifest as a seedy version of Pan or as an enchantress or a seducer, or just your garden variety sexual misfit.
Yes the time of birth would help but I think there is enough here to justify elements of concern. He isn’t walking away from this scot free.

Does everyone born in the summer of ’71 have Mars in Aquarius? This guy is a month older than I am and I notice I also have Mars in Aquarius. Interesting to look at this interpretation in that light. Is some of this a generational thing? It would be interesting to look at the motivations of the people who’ve leaked information to him and to see if they’re in the same general age range.

Hi Lynn,
what strikes me in his chart is that it is to a large extent impersonal; he is being worked through by the planets, so to speak.
His frail body makes me think he might have a Gemini Asc.
Thanks,Lynn, for your inspiration, dedication. martine – Geneva

Hi Geneva – thanks for your comment and this is a somewhat impersonal chart, but that impersonality combines with the passion of Scorpio and Pluto. Also be careful about judging ascendants by physical appearance: I have Gemini rising and I have the opposite of a frail body. (I do look younger than my years though.)

Oh, well, there goes that theory. For whatever reason it’s kind of fun for me to see someone that close to me in age stirring things up. I don’t know what to make of his actions. I think he’s done a lot of damage to diplomacy, on the one hand, and on the other hand I revere freedom of the press and the public’s right to know. I hope the guy isn’t guilty of rape. That would be a pity.

Actually I believe that the Powers-That-Be are more worried about Assange’s threat to expose the interal dealings of a major bank.I am sure that any information he would have would include how various governments interacted with the institution also maybe even a paper trail on how the world economy unravelled a couple of years ago.

I am all over that Saturn in Gemini oppose Neptune in Sag. Is it helpful or just there to muckrake? I don’t know but I can say that I think it is interesting that about one month before Julian was born The Pentagon Papers were released which does speak of the tension between the two planets.

Muckraking IS helpful in and of itself, especially when it’s about politicians and institutions who have not served the public. An argument can probably be made about the ethics of those who leaked the information and whether lives will be put at risk because of some of it, but I think there is a role for this sort of web site and this type of person in the cyber age. It will become ever more rare in the mainstream media in an age when newspapers and broadcast companies are more worried than ever about the bottom line and are firiing journalists right and left.

Just wanted to point out for the person who questioned about the influence of Mars in Aquarius, that Mars made a lengthy stay in Aquarius in 1971. Mars entered Aquarius approx. May 5th that year and due to a retrograde period from about July 12 – Sept 10, Mars stayed in Aquarius until about Nov 7th. I realized this when I noticed the placement in Mr. Assange’s chart and remembered that I, too, have Mars in Aquarius although I was born in October of the same year.

After I posted about The Pentagon Papers, the next day I saw John Kerry on Meet The Press and in discussing the wikileaks he said, “This is no Pentagon Papers.”
but one thing I did find curious was apparently stocks rose on BofA today after Julian turned himself into the authorities. The report I saw on CNBC said this was possibly based on Julian’s previous disclosure that he has missives he was going to release that will bring down a bank. Notice his article “Transparency in the cold light of Finland.” Individuals who believe that they are a power unto themselves and the consequences to others be damned aren’t so unique. History is riddled with them. Nothing wrong here. Just a look at the two sides to the coin that most people are.

I notice a few comments here highly critical of Assange. It’s true, many are upset that what he is doing is outside the norm of what many people have been conditioned to think.
But what is he doing? He knows the level of corruption, lies, greed, war, torture, arm-bending that governments and corporations do to innocent people.
The media never reports about things like this. They are part of and owned by the very groups/people who are doing all the bad things in the world.
So it’s only someone like Assange, who isn’t going to bow down to the corrupt and lying, half-truth-telling medias and governments, who is able to get the truth out.
So many people have grown up never questioning the news they hear or the opinion articles, or the editorials they read…which tend to be part of the whole propaganda machine themselves.
Those who see what’s really going on in the world sincerely wish there were more people like Assange with courage and drive to stand up for the innocent and silenced ones.
He may think himself a bit of a hero, but it would be hard for anyone who has come this far in the spotlight not to at least a little bit.
His mission is wholehearted and needed in this deceived world.

@all and supporting Djembe Mokoko,
History will inform future generations of the value of Wikileaks and it’s public warrior/saviour archetype in julien assange. At this moment and at least from my perspective he and the organization he fronts is doing we the people a great service.
I went to the link provided above by Niki (here; http://web.archive.org/web/20071020051936/http://iq.org/#Hereyeshadgreatclarity) and read a large portion of the IQ.org site writings and quotes put together by assange; they resonate with my sense of “what it is to be human” and in my case to be male.
On the basis of the 2:05am 3 July 1971 birth time suggested above gives assange’s horoscope a fixed character, which I share, Aquarius Asc. for me Taurus Asc. for him.. thus he is meeting intensity (Scorpio) in his Dec. and is ultimately Aquarian in his aspiration adjudged by his MC. conj. Vertex 9th house, and with the North Node and Mars in Aquarius in the 10th, thus he is noted publicly stridency in the political realm..
In his IQ.org take the time to read the entry headed “Sat 23 Sep 2006 : William James Sidis” in which he recapitulates studies into the societal maladjustment of the gifted with high literary IQ scores.. their appears to be empirical evidence that many so gifted do not handle their inheritance well within the framework of acceptable society…
…so from a societal perspective young julien might be iconclastic and egocentric, however without these qualities his organization Wikileaks and the current furore would not be troubling this website nor the MSM who wish to keep the masses passive!
And from an astrological perspective the current transit of Pluto through Capricorn is playing out in the Wikileaks saga just as the Pluto transit through my sun sign Sagittarius uncovered the promiscuous and bestial priesthood and their Vatican accomplices preying on the youth of Christ’s church; see “The Case of the Pope” by another notable Australian, Geoffrey Robertson here; http://www.amazon.com/Case-Pope-Vatican-Accountability-Rights
/dp/0241953847
..as in all situations relating to politics, big money and power.. nothing is more of a corrupting influence than power itself.. thus Julien might fail in his self appointed mission.. however my hope is that the Swedish sex scandal is a lesson learned early in his hopefully lengthy journalist career.
in light and peace greg.
