The Leo Full Moon on the star Regulus, February 18

posted by Lynn Hayes

Full Moon Leo RegulusThe Full Moon that occurred early this morning occured at the 29th degree of the sign of Leo.  The 29th degree, sometimes called the “critical” or “anaretic” degree, is associated with the endings of cycles and new beginnings.  The word “anaretic” derives from “anareta,” which in medieval astrology signified the planet of death in the natal horoscope.  This is likely what has given the 29th degree such a bad rap in traditional astrology, although endings are actually the harbinger of new beginnings and not to be feared.

In any case, the fixed star Regulus is at the 29th degree of Leo, so this Full Moon is in an exact conjunction.  Regulus is one of the four Royal Stars of ancient Persia and called the “Lion’s Heart,” which is perfect for its placement in the sign of Leo, but will be less perfect when Regulus moves into Virgo this year.

At any rate, this Full Moon includes an alignment of three planet in Aquarius: the Sun, Mars and Neptune.  This is a rather challenging combination that can confuse (Neptune) the direction of our motivation and drive (Mars), especially since the Moon in the Full Moon chart is in opposition to these planets and takes us more deeply into our emotions.  We just have to ride the wave rather than try to control it.  Something is ending now, and we are the witnesses.

The Full Moon is accompanied by the challenging square between Jupiter and Pluto that I mentioned in yesterday’s post about the Day of Rage in the middle east.  The battle for supremacy that is driven by the face-off between Jupiter and Pluto combined with the Full Moon  and Regulus suggests the ending of a regime and the destruction of an era.

It will be interesting to see what happens in Libya and Bahrain which seem to be the most intensive battlegrounds at the moment.  We have more control over how we allow this energy to unfold in our own lives.  The Leo Full Moon is a time to celebrate the Self and allow our own inner divinity to shine and to be recognized, without falling over into the realm of ego-driven self-absorption.

The effect of the Full Moon will linger for two or three days and provide us with an opportunity to find that nobility and strength in our own hearts and allow it to infuse us with grace and power in the absence of ego and greed.

Real Life with Taurus: Pass the Chocolate
We're deep into Taurus territory now. But with two more weeks to go before the Sun moves into Gemini, let's talk about Taurus -- the bully bull bull. Taurus is known for its extravagance, and also for being chocolate snobs, according to my colleague and fellow writer, Astrologer Maria DeSimone.

Mercury in Taurus: Give Up the Gab
Speak your mind today, because tomorrow it's time to give up the gab. Mercury is a pretty chatty planet -- except when it's in Taurus, as it will be from Wednesday, May 9 through Thursday, May 24. Remember -- Taurus is the most practical and inflexible of zodiac signs, and it's also the slowest.

Thank you for the informative and well-wriiten post. I especially appreciate the advice of riding the wave rather than trying to control it, and letting own own inner divinity shine without falling into the realm of ego-driven self-absorption. Striving for that internal balance is so helpful in times like these. I will be curious to see if, or in what ways the CMEs will affect this particular set of astrological circumstances.

We are All Being Called to Tahrir Square
“In another inspiring commentary on Egypt, David Spangler writes of an understanding shared with him by a Presence who he thought of as an ‘Angel of Humanity’. The Presence suggested: What is happening here is part of a process that goes beyond Egypt and its concerns. It is a human occurrence. It is one expression, conditioned by the circumstances of the Middle East, of an unfoldment that all humanity is experiencing, not just Egyptians or Arabs. This is the most important thing to know. David Spangler, reflecting on this, notes: We can realize that we are all facing and struggling with a need to change and go beyond our current ways of treating each other and our world if we are all going to have a livable future, much less realize the fullness of our human potential. In this sense he suggests that we are all called to revolution: It is the oppression of [an] inner tyranny of ancient and outworn thoughts, emotions, habits, and beliefs that all of us, all of humanity, is now struggling against, like a butterfly trying to break out of a cocoon. We are all being called to make our way to the Tahrir Square of our minds and hearts, there to stand together and demand the old ways step down so a new humanity may emerge.”

I have a question please; Regulus entering Virgo. If I understand what I heard, it is a time where women come into the acendancy. Is this correct to your knowledge? Do I have the correct star?

Hi Marianne, this question really deserves its own post and I’ve actually been working on something on this very subject. So please be patient – you’ve inspired me to put that forth sooner rather than later.
