The astrology of Oprah Winfrey

by Lynn Hayes

Oprah.jpg
Oprah will announce today that she will be stepping down in 2011 when her current contract expires.  Oprah has dominated the talk show world for 25 years, and it's not surprising that as she hits midlife she is choosing to take another path.  The triple conjunction of Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune that has been affecting everyone since February of this year has been particularly powerful in her chart for reasons I'll explain below, and she likely is feeling a push from within to feed her soul in a deeper way than she has been able to do previously.

This paragraph for astrology geeks only:  In any astrological profile, an accurate birth time is very useful but often difficult to obtain. My Solar Fire database has a birth time of 7:51 and rates it "A" but doesn't provide a source.  Astrodatabank tells the story of a show where Oprah featured a "life clock" that computed her birth time to 7:50 pm.  However, there is no way to know if this "life clock" actually computed from her real birth time.  This time was disputed by astrologer Bob Marks who was told by Oprah after the show that she thinks she was born at 4:30 am but no one knows for sure.  I'm using the 4:30 am time here and I think it works nicely.

Oprah was born under the sign of Aquarius, the sign of authenticity and innovation.  Aquarians are not good followers; nor do they follow rules well.  Aquarius is all about creating new pathways and forging new destinies.  They are the inventors, the revolutionaries, and the trailblazers  The time of birth that we have for Oprah is approximate so we cannot pinpoint her ascendant, or rising sign exactly, but it appears that it was the very last minutes of Sagittarius and moving into Capricorn.  The ascendant is the persona - the way that others see us - so it is the easiest for us to guess and this blend of the optimism and expansiveness of Sagittarius with the grounded discipline and success orientation of Capricorn perfectly describes Oprah's outward experience and the way that she has navigated the challenges of her life.

Her Moon is in Sagittarius, giving her the core of positive optimism that has helped to drive her through the extreme difficulties of her life.  The Moon in Sagittarius likes to stay on the move and needs the independence to pursue one's own adventures through life.  One account tells us that Oprah has eight homes, reflecting this need to find one's place of comfort (Moon) in a variety of experiences (Sagittarius).

It's not only the Sun that falls in Aquarius in Oprah's chart; her Sun is rightly conjunct Venus in Aquarius, illustrating her ability to draw and attract (Venus) others to her.  Sun/Venus people are typically people magnets; they have a magnetic quality and can be extremely influential.  However, this Sun/Venus combination is squared by Saturn in a challenging aspect that reveals her deep insecurities about her looks and lovability (Saturn/Venus) and a strong need for isolation and a tendency toward depression (Saturn/Sun).

Oprah's Venus, Sun and Mercury all fall in the second house of money and wealth, evidence of her powerful need to accumulate financial security.  The square from Saturn, the Celestial Taskmaster, shows that she has had to work very hard to make this happen.  Oprah is lucky financially with Venus in the second house, but Saturn makes sure that she works for what she has.  Mercury (the mind) in the second house often earns a living (money) through communication (Mercury) and shows that she has a facility with money and understands the way the ebbs and flow of finance operate.

Oprah has made no secret of the painful sexual abuse she experienced as a young girl, and we can see that in her chart with Mars (drive, anger, sexuality) in Scorpio (intensity and passion) squared by Pluto (death and transformation).  We call this an astrological "double whammy," because Mars is in Scorpio, which is ruled by Pluto, and it is squared by Pluto making this a double Mars/Pluto signature.  When Mars and Pluto collide there is often (but not always!!) a history of abuse in the past, and there is nearly always a sense of having been blocked and obstructed that can lead to a deep rage.

Weight gain is a complicated issue, and as everyone knows Oprah has struggled with her weight in a very public way.  Most of us who are prone to weight issues are emotional eaters, and it is not uncommon for someone with a deep rage such as we often find with Mars/Pluto to use food as a comfort and to block those feelings, which can be very distressing.

Pluto is also in a stressful aspect to Oprah's Mercury, revealing her probing (Pluto) mind (Mercury) and a deep interest in psychology and why people behave the way they do.  This fascination with people has fueled her show and brought her millions of fans, like me, who also enjoy taking a deep look beneath the surface (Pluto) of a subject to see what's really going on underneath.   She also has Jupiter (optimism and success) in Gemini, the sign of communication, in the sixth house of work and it forms a harmonious trine to her Midheaven, the point of career.  No wonder she's successful (Jupiter) in the communication (Gemini) field!!

Oprah's relationship life is a topic of much discussion.  Why doesn't she marry Stedman?  Is she gay and having an affair with her best friend Gayle King?  Like many of us, relationships are complicated in Oprah's chart.  She has the Sun in Aquarius which needs to be independent.  She has the Moon in Sagittarius which needs emotional freedom, not emotional closeness, and her Moon sits in the eleventh house of friendship.  Oprah really wants friends, not lovers.  Not that she doesn't have a sexual side - that Mars in Scorpio is extremely sexual and together with the square to Pluto can be extremely obsessive.  Oprah herself has told stories of relationships (with men who were largely unavailable) that she considered killing herself over.  Too much sexual connection and obsessive intimacy such as Scorpio and Pluto can bring is likely  frightening for her, something that is echoed by Saturn (insecurity) in Scorpio (sexuality and intensity).  In addition, Uranus (autonomy and rebellion) is in her seventh house of marriage and partnership, suggesting an unconventional (Uranus) approach to marriage (seventh house) and a need for freedom in that area.  I suspect that her current relationship with Stedman is much more comfortable, although perhaps less satisfying emotionally.

The triple conjunction of Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune has been deeply affecting many people since they aligned earlier this year.  This is a combination that digs into our soul and calls on us to experience our true selves more deeply, and if these planets are affecting planets in our own chart the process is that much more significant.  All three planets have been transiting over Oprah's Mars, Pluto and Mercury.  Many of us that were born in the early 1950s have Pluto at 22-26 degrees Leo, and the triple conjunction, at 22-26 degrees Aquarius, has been causing a great deal of introspection and a digging down deep (Pluto remember rules the underworld) to see where our life needs to have more meaning; to find ways in which we can connect more deeply to our own inner selves.

Transiting Pluto crossed Oprah's ascendant in 2007 and 2008, a transformative planetary cycle that motivates us to take a deep look at our own life and our relationships.  It is likely that this move has been in the works for some time, and there is some speculation that she is going to keep the show on her own cable channel.  In May of 2010 Uranus will square her ascendant and the urge for change will accelerate.  At the same time, Saturn and Pluto will square her progressed Sun, and I suspect that whatever she is planning for now will be under review when these three planets start to exert their influence.

Oprah is a powerful example for anyone with challenging planetary aspects who worries that their life is doomed because, say, Mars squares Pluto in their chart.  She demonstrates vividly that sometimes it is the greatest challenges that offer the opportunities for the greatest power in our lives.

Johnny Depp is sexiest man alive!

by Lynn Hayes

johnny-depp.jpg
You'll get no argument from my 82-year old mother on this subject!  People Magazine today named Johnny Depp the sexiest man alive, a title he first won back in 2003.  I first profiled Depp in 2006:

After many years of resisting commercial exploitation, Johnny Depp has become a major bankable star with the release of the Pirates of the Caribbean series. Beginning with his breakout role in Twenty-One Jump Street, Johnny Depp has fought the Hollywood machine even though it meant foregoing roles that would bring him great commercial success. Instead he focused on smaller character roles where he could practice the art of acting, aligning himself with quirky geniuses such as Tim Burton and John Waters. After a lifetime of what he calls "hillbilly rage," he has mellowed into a mature actor with a grown-up life that includes family life with his children and long-term partner Vanessa Paradis.

Depp's astrological chart shows that he was born with the Sun in Gemini. Gemini is ruled by Mercury, and is the sign of the trickster, the prankster, the messenger. Typically very communicative and verbal, Geminis (or those born with Mercury prominent in their chart) can be mercurial and adept at mimicry, able to slip in and out of roles easily. Leo, the sign of rulership, is rising in his chart, showing someone with a natural confidence and desire to be recognized and appreciated.

Uranus, the planet of individuality and rebellion, conjuncts Mars (the aggressive instinct) in Depp's first house of identity and personality, a strong combination that tends to show reckless and rebellious behavior. Uranus in the first house often shows someone who is perceived as being "odd" or "strange," and this is certainly true of Johnny Depp. He seems most comfortable playing characters whose weirdness protects them from hurt and emotional pain (remember Edward Scissorhands?).

Johnny Depp showed the Uranus/Mars combination from an early age; he was a rebel in his teens, suffering self-mutilation as a child and scrapes with the law and drug abuse by the age of fourteen. As a young actor he was well known for bad behavior resulting from a lack of respect for the studio process and the desire of Hollywood to turn him into a commodity. As an adult, he has cut his own road to success in films.

Johnny Depp has a Capricorn moon, identifying him as a serious individual who craves material security as well as emotional nurturing. Some interviewers have been surprised at Depp's desire to continue the "Pirates" series, believing that he dislikes material success, but he has stated clearly that this is NOT the case. What he dislikes is having to be something other than who he is in order to be successful. He clearly enjoys the fruits of fame, with homes in L.A. and in the South of France, and his own island in the Caribbean. This Capricorn Moon is primarily focused on business and outcome, while the rest of his personality craves an outlet for his tremendous creativity. This combination can sometimes lead to internal stress between the artist and the businessman and we have certainly seen that in Johnny Depp.

Depp beat out some serious competition for the prize, but People says that they awarded the honor to Depp for always "bringing the fun with him."  Jupiter has been making a trine to Depp's Sun this year, bringing good luck and good fortune his way, a trend that is likely to continue in 2010 as Jupiter continues to bless the Sun in his progressed chart as well.

Carrie Prejean continues to self-destruct with sex tape

by Lynn Hayes

prejean2.jpg
You may remember Carrie Prejean, the former Miss California who lost her bid for Miss USA and was subsequently fired as Miss California.  Since then she has been sued by the Miss California pageant demanding reimbursement for breast implants, to which she filed a countersuit for discrimination against her over her religion.

She evidently dropped the lawsuit after viewing a DVD in which she played the starring role in a porno film during a negotiation session.  Tuesday she defended herself on the program The View against questions regarding the sex tape.  Then yesterday, in an interview with Larry King promoting her book "Still Standing," she threatened to walk off the set when King asked her a question about the settlement.

You can read all about Carrie Prejean's astrological chart in this earlier article from June of this year when she was fired.  In that article I wrote about the challenging opposition in her chart between Mars (aggression and defense) and Uranus (rebellion and revolutionary behavior).  At the time I wrote, "this means that she has a tendency to attract situations which put her in conflict against other people when actually the conflict originates within herself.  She is outspoken with aggressive Mars in the communication sign of Gemini, and that Uranus factor acts as a constant irritant which continually provokes her into rebellion of one form or another."

Carrie has been going through some difficult planetary cycles lately.  Earlier this year that explosive trigger in her chart composed of Mars and Uranus was activated by both Saturn and Uranus in the sky.  At the same time, the triple conjunction of Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune which has brought about such intense emotional experiences for many of us has been in a challenging square to her Sun and Moon, which are in conflict with each other in her chart.  This has exacerbated an inner battle between her conscious needs and desires (Sun) and her emotional reactions (Moon), and the fact that her Moon is in passionate Scorpio intensifies this conflict even more.

In many ways Carrie Prejean exemplifies the culture war going on in the United States right now.  Many in the Christian Right have set Carrie on a pedestal as a martyr for her beliefs, although she was recently dropped from a conservative event called "Defenders of the Family."

In any case, I suspect that her fifteen seconds of fame are probably just about over.

Morrisey hospitalized after collapsing on stage

by Lynn Hayes

Morrissey.jpg
Singer-songwriter Morrissey collapsed on stage last night and was rushed to the hospital with an unidentified respiratory ailment.

Morrissey (May 22, 1959, time unknown, Lancashire England) is a complicated personality astrologically, with a lighthearted Gemini Sun squared by Pluto, the god of death.  He has said that he began taking prescription drugs as a teenager to combat the depression that often accompanies this kind of planetary combination, and he is known in the British press as the Pope of Mope.

He is also well-known for his ambivalent sexuality. Pluto is the planet of intense emotional experiences, and this encompasses the experience of sexuality which draws us into the underworld where we may feel we have lost control.  This conflict between Pluto's darkness and the lighthearted Gemini Sun and the fear of being overpowered is exemplified in this lyric from the song "Handsome Devil": "And when we're in your scholarly room, who will swallow whom?"

Gemini rules breathing, and that square from Pluto in the natal chart can create breathing difficulties.  Morrissey also has a square from Jupiter in Scorpio, which has a tendency towards intensity anyway, to Chiron (the Wounded Healer archetype). This aspect bestows a powerful sense of social justice and a need to feel important and that one was put on the Earth for an important reason.  It also expands (Jupiter) the requirement by Chiron that undigested emotional material be released and healed, so transits to these points can create health problems that arise from emotional and psychological disconnects.

Morrissey's Moon is involved in this combination as well; depending on the time he was born, his Moon either conjoins Jupiter in Scorpio and squares Chiron (if he is born before noon)  which would create a fair amount of emotional sensitivity, or if he is born in the afternoon his Moon is in the early degrees of Sagittarius where it is squared by Pluto, another challenging dynamic that can add to the feeling of being overwhelmed.

In any event, as we get older our unresolved psychological issues begin to lodge themselves in the body where they lurk until we go through a holistic process of healing the body, mind and spirit.  The Triple Conjunction of Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune that we have seen in the sky this year formed an exact square to Morrissey's Jupiter for the first time in February of 2009, when he canceled concert dates on his US tour.  The second square of the Triple Conjunction to Jupiter in his chart took place on May 29, the day that he canceled a series of concerts in Britain.

Morrissey's Chiron Return begins next year - this is the time at around age 51 when Chiron in the sky returns to the same degree as it occupies in the birthchart so he is likely to continue to experience health problems unless he seeks healing in the emotional and spiritual realm as well as the physical.

More on Letterman's birthchart and what is rectification?

by Lynn Hayes

The other day I wrote on Dave Letterman's chart as it affects his situation at the moment, embroiled in a blackmail scheme and needing to make major apologies to his wife and staff.  My anonymous commenter Chiron questioned the birth time of 6 am which has been put forth by the wonderful people at Astrodatabank which is now posted on astro.com and is listed with a Rodden rating of A.

Rectification is the art, or fantasy depending on how you look at it, of assigning a time of birth to a person where no birth time is known, using the astrological correlations with certain events in a person's life.

Rectification is more reliable when we have a smaller time range, for example, if I know that someone was born in the afternoon I can generally narrow down the time using rectification methods.  But if we have no birth time, such as in the case of a celebrity, and we rectify based on what we THINK we know about that celebrity, we are not doing ourselves or the field of astrology any favors.

The example of what happened with Susan Boyle's birthchart is a good one.  Susan Boyle, as you may recall, exploded into public view overnight.  Nothing was known about her, but when a birth time was found astrologers all over the world began publishing what we thought were extremely accurate portrayals of her birthchart using this birth time.  Unfortunately for us, that birth time turned out to be incorrect and the correct birth time did not appear to be so accurate based on what we assumed we knew about Susan Boyle.  (You can read more about that drama here.)

That said, the 6 am time for Letterman comes from a staffer and from his biography so it is reasonably reliable although when I see a rounded-off time I am always somewhat skeptical.  Still, this time does set up a chart that appears to be accurate when we look at certain planetary transits to the angles (the angles are the ascendant and midheaven, and they are dependent upon the time of birth).

For example, in January of 2000 David Letterman was rushed to the hospital for quintuple bypass surgery.  At the time, his progressed Midheaven was exactly square to his progressed Sun within minutes.  The Sun, either in the birthchart or by progression, is nearly always implicated in diseases of the heart and aspects from the progressed Midheaven often indicate a major change in a person's life.  The Midheaven also in some cases represents the father, and Letterman's father died of a heart attack so this event certainly would have been a major turning point for him.

The timeline of the current extortion attempt is also reflected in the chart provided by Astrodatabank with the 6 am birthtime.  Letterman said Thursday night that three weeks before he was approached by the blackmailer.  At the time, transiting Mars (aggression) was conjunct his progressed ascendant (his public persona) and transiting Mercury (messages) was opposite Mars (war and defense) in his natal chart.  Any one of these events could have brought about an event of aggression, but the combination of the two would have accelerated the drama of the event.

Shortly thereafter, on September 20, transiting Mars made a challenging square to his progressed Moon, threatening his security and that of his family (Moon) but at the same time, transiting Chiron (wounding and healing) was in a harmonious trine to his Sun (Self), facilitating his desire to work through the problem rather than allow it to bury him in disgrace.

Mars has been very active throughout the period from September 14th to the present, activating Letterman's chart and energizing him for the conflict to come.  But what clinches the deal for me is that on October 1st when Letterman made the announcement, transiting Mars (conflict) sat right on the Nadir of the chart, opposite the Midheaven which is the point at which we project ourselves into the public arena.  The Nadir/Midheaven polarity requires that we balance our inner world (Nadir) with the outer world of our profession (Midheaven), and in Letterman's announcement he was seeking that balance in a very public way.
