Nidal Malik Hasan: An astrological analysis of the Fort Hood shooting

by Lynn Hayes

Military personnel are struggling to retrace the steps of the suspected shooter in Thursday's massacre at the Fort Hood military base in Texas. Major Nidal Malik Hasan, a devout Muslim, has been named as the gunman.  He allegedly opened fire shouting "Allahu Akbar" (god is great) before killing thirteen people and wounding 28 others.  He was shot down by police and is currently on a ventilator.

Hasan has described himself as being of Palestinian descent (second generation), although some sources have listed his background as Jordanian.  He was born in Arlington Virginia on September 8, 1970 (no time available), and joined the army immediately after completing high school, against his parent's wishes.  He attended Virginia Tech as an enlisted soldier and went on to medical school at a military university, earning his medical degree in 2001.  Further education trained him to be a psychiatrist, and he was promoted to Major in 2008.

Hasan's parents died in 1998 and 2001, after which time he is said to have become more devout, attending the local mosque regularly and after September 11 he became more and more outspoken against the "war on terror" which he felt was a war against Islam.  Perhaps as a result of his increasing distress about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, he became the target of harrassment from other soldiers and had recently hired an attorney to attempt to be released from his military obligations.

Hasan's astrological chart reveals a deeply introverted individual, with four planets in the service--oriented sign of Virgo.  Virgo is very much about rules and the need for life to follow a certain order, and it is likely that Hasan embraced life in the military as a means to achieve that sense of order.  News reports suggest that he joined the army against his parents' wishes out of a sense of duty to the United States.

Hasan's Virgo planets form a challenging square to his Moon which is in Sagittarius.  Sagittarius is the sign of optimism and faith, and the Moon describes our emotional needs.   This placement suggests that Hasan was always struggling between a rigid sense of duty and routine (Virgo) and a need for freedom and escape (Sagittarius), and perhaps his religion, which falls under the Sagittarian mantle, provided that hope for release.

Hasan's chart also reveals a bit about his desire for love, with Venus, the planet of attraction and relationships, in the intensely passionate sign of Scorpio.  The intensity of Scorpio can make relationships difficult or overwhelming, especially for someone with such a well-defined need for order and routine (Virgo) with a secret desire to escape (Sagittarius).  His Venus conjoins Jupiter, which ordinarily can be a blessing in drawing and attracting love, but in this case may have simply served to expand (Jupiter) the obsessive intensity of Hasan's passions which, because of his lack of success in the area of relationships, may have instead been funneled through religion (Sagittarius Moon).

Although Hasan's Mercury (his thoughts and communication) is in the sign of Virgo which typically conveys an orderly and detail-oriented mind, it is retrograde in his chart which suggests that he had difficulty expressing himself and felt that he could not make himself heard.  This tendency is exacerbated by a conjunction of Pluto, planet of obsession and intensity, to Mercury in his chart which enhances a potential for obsessive and destructive thinking.

We also see Saturn, the planet of self-doubt, is retrograde in this chart.  Retrograde Saturn typically describes an individual who has a tendency to be self-critical and more than others, to feel a sense of inadequacy.  Saturn in the chart is opposed by Neptune, planet of illlusion and spirituality, suggesting a tension between his need for structure and rules (Saturn) with his desire to escape or transcend his life (Neptune).  The combination of Saturn and Neptune can lead to a Grand Delusion in which the ends justify the means.

I want to emphasize that this is not a particularly difficult chart; these are garden variety challenges that are found in virtually every chart.  Each of us has the choice every moment whether we are going to react to the challenges in our chart, or consciously strive to become better integrated and better able to make the changes in our world that we desire.

During the period of time in which Hasan's parents died, which seems to be the turning point in his life that propelled him into a more intense embrace of his faith, transiting Pluto was beginning a challenging square to the Virgo planets in his chart.  Beginning with a square to his Mars in 1998 with the death of his first parent, which could have unearthed (Pluto) a deep rage (Mars) within him, Pluto went on to square his Sun in 2001 with the death of the second parent, a time that coincided with the September 11 attacks.  By this time the underworld of Hasan's psyche would have been deeply activated, and it appeared that he used his religion and his outrage against the wars as an outlet for the emotional debris that was released by Pluto and intensified by the presence of Saturn, the planet of tests and challenges, in that square formation.

Back in 2001, transiting Saturn was oppose Pluto in the sky, a planetary combination that peaked with the September 11 attacks.  At that time both planets formed a square to Hasan's Virgo planets.  This would have been a time of tremendous distress for anyone, and for someone with an unresolved sense of identity such as Hasan had it evidently created a powderkeg of distress.  I suspect that it was this period which holds the clues to Thursday's events. t it

In 2006, transiting Pluto completed the transit of Hasan's Virgo planets with a square to Pluto in his natal chart.  We call this the "Pluto square," one of what I affectionally call the "midlife crisis transits."  Pluto rules transformation, death and power, and at the time of the square from Pluto in the sky to Pluto in our chart nothing is simple or easy; we are often blocked at every turn.  This can be an opportunity for us to become empowered and clear about our motivations, or it can be a time of great distress.  Often it is both.

In Hasan's case this Pluto square was immediately followed by a transit of Saturn across his Virgo planets again, which just completed in September.  Saturn was exactly conjunct Hasan's Sun in June when another Muslim went on a shooting spree at a Little Rock recruiting center, an event which apparently had an effect on him.

At the same time, Hasan's progressed Mars (rage and aggression) was exactly conjunct progressed Pluto and squared by transiting Saturn, and the inner rage which has been building beneath the cautious Virgoan personality began to explode.  However, Saturn's pressure and confinement was creating restrictions and compression that likely exacerbated the developing rage within him.

Again - there is nothing in this chart that would have suggested or excused an act such as this. After an event such as this one, the people that knew the shooter always say "he was such a quiet man," or "I can't believe he could have done this."  Had Hasan not retreated so completely into himself where he could not find a more objective way to handle his emotions and create the change in his life that he desired, there could have been a very different outcome.  How ironic, and tragic, that as an army psychiatrist he was trained to accomplish this very thing for other soldiers.

The Jaycee Lee Dugard case

by Lynn Hayes

jaycee.jpg
When word of Jaycee's release first surfaced on Friday I of course took an immediate look at her birthchart.  You would expect that someone who was kidnapped and forced to be a sex slave for 18 years would have a horrific chart full of Plutonic undertones but that did not turn out to be the case.  We do not have a time of birth for Jaycee, and while her chart (May 3, 1980) does show a conjunction of the Sun to Chiron which does suggest a wounding in childhood, there is also a strong fantasy element to the chart.  That Sun/Chiron conjunction is in the earthy sign of Taurus showing that she is a person who needs to feel that life is stable (Taurus), but that an early wound (Chiron) made that impossible.

Jaycee's birthchart has the Moon in Sagittarius conjunct Neptune, fusing the emotions (Moon) with creativity and imagination (Neptune).  Moon/Neptune people are extraordinarily creative, but also sometimes have difficulty being grounded in reality.  That Sagittarian Moon longs for freedom and does not like to dwell in despair.

Her Moon/Neptune conjunction is opposed by Venus which enhances that powerful creative imagination even more, adding to the picture of a young girl who perhaps found an opportunity to escape from a life that was difficult and unhappy.  We don't know much about Jaycee's family, but news reports suggest that her biological father left the family at an early age and made no contact after that.  Aspects to the Sun often reveal the relationship of an individual to a father, and a Chiron/Sun conjunction often will show the death or abandonment by the father.

Saturn in Jaycee's chart is retrograde, indicating an individual who tends to be more self-critical than other people, and it forms a T-square ( a challenging aspect) to both Venus, showing a deep blow to her self-worth, and the Moon/Neptune conjunction as well.  Saturn square to the Moon can show depression, but this T-square also shows someone who is deeply shy and socially awkward.

At the same time, though, she has Mars on the Leo/Virgo cusp conjunct Jupiter within 30 minutes which is a tight conjunction.  On a certain level she was practical and grounded, and that Mars/Jupiter conjunction provides an abundance of energy and enthusiasm.  It also forms a trine to her Taurus Mercury, providing balance and an intellectual focus and reason to be able to work through any challenge.

Jaycee's stepfather was two blocks away at the time of the disappearance and was an initial suspect in the case.  He has been very visible in the aftermath, although it appears that he and Jaycee's mother are no longer together.

The transits at the time of Jaycee's capture on June 10, 1991 are interesting as well, with transiting Mars and Jupiter conjunct in the sky, forming a nearly exact square to Jaycee's Sun/Chiron conjunction.  Shortly after her kidnapping there are a series of Jupiter transits to her natal chart that suggest a sense of liberation.  Jaycee's stepfather has said that she came to feel that her relationship with her captor was a kind of marriage.  After 18 years of captivity, that family would have become more real to her than her old life.

I certainly don't mean to imply that there was anything beneficial in Jaycee's abduction.  But life is complex, and understanding the astrological implications helps to provide greater understanding.  I myself was assaulted at the age of 10.  Lonely and feeling unloved, I willingly went off with the man who then assaulted me.  This experience took me through a darkness that I would not have otherwise known, but the actual experience was no more  traumatic as life in my family was at the time.  The astrological signatures of an event provide clues as to the nature of these events for the growth of the individual.

At the time of her reappearance she was in the throes of her Saturn return, the time at age 28-30 when Saturn returns to its place in the birthchart.  This is a challenging time for anyone, as Saturn requires that we face reality and move into adulthood.  For Jaycee, the Saturn return hit the Moon/Venus/Neptune planetary system as well, perhaps jolting her into a shocking awareness.  In fact, at the time of her reappearance transiting Saturn was exactly square to Neptune, and Jaycee woke up (Saturn) from this bad dream (Neptune).

Astrologer is suspect in husband's murder

by Lynn Hayes

Phillips--LG1.jpg
A news report reveals that Pamela Phillips, founder of the now-defunct Starbabies website, may have to go on trial as a suspect in the murder of her ex-husband, Arizona real estate developer Gary Lee Triano, in Aspen back in 1996.  Investigators believe that Phillips paid Ronald Young $400,000 to murder Triano in anticipation of a $2  million life insurance payout.  Phillips has disappeared and has not cooperated with the investigation.

The "Dateline" program aired a show about the case on Monday night this week and claims that they found Phillips in Switzerland. The Aspen home that she bought with the insurance proceeds is under foreclosure, and she has been profiled on the television program "America's Most Wanted."
 .
The case goes to trial in November of this year.  Now THAT's a profile I would really like to do, if I could find a date of birth!

Abortion doc murder: painful reminder of the abortion issue

by Lynn Hayes

With the furor over gay marriage and health care reform taking precedence over the past few years, the battle over abortion has faded into the backdrop of American society.  But just as the conjunction of Chiron and Neptune is culminating, the murder of one of the few doctors who performed late term abortions as he worshipped in his church is bringing the abortion discussion back into the public consciousness.

Jupiter is the planet that gives us the desire to play God.  Jupiter, you may remember, was King of the Gods, and his exuberance and confidence often gives us the feeling that we ARE King of the Gods.  Jupiter is the planet of righteousness and judgement; the dispenser of laws and the creator of theology.  In the Judeo-Christian mythology, Jupiter is Yahweh, the harsh god of justice, where Neptune is Jesus, the god of compassion and love. (The original Jesus bears very little resemblance to the Jesus of the militant right wing and Christian terrorists.)

The addition of Jupiter to the Chiron/Neptune mix is very visible in the murder of George Tiller on May 31st. The Chiron/Neptune conjunction is reaching down into the soul and exposing old wounds so that they can be healed, and this can happen on a global level, a national level, a family level and as individuals.

Tiller's murderer, Scott Roeder (born 2/25/58, Merriam Kansas, time unknown) was a member of several anti-government and militant anti-abortion groups.  Those who knew him said that he believed murder to protect the unborn was justifiable homicide.  Roeder's birthchart shows the Sun conjunct Mercury in sensitive Pisces.  Pisces is known as the sign of the Saint and the Sinner, because its tendency to blur the boundaries of reality can be channeled into a spiritual life or a life of escapism.

In any case, the sense of Self is often weak in those with the Sun in Pisces; they often prefer to blend in with the people around them.  This is exacerbated by the conjunction of the Sun to Mercury, which doubles the shapeshifting qualities of Pisces and can create a guile that is very effective.  Rupert Murdoch has the Sun conjunct Mercury in Pisces and he has used this ability to adapt to his environment to very successful ends.

In Roeder's chart, the conjunction of the Sun and Mercury is opposed by Pluto, the lord of death and transformation.  In opposition to the Sun, Pluto often denotes a childhood of abuse of some kind and a pattern of compulsive behavior.  In a person who is on a path of self-understanding, these patterns can be broken and the power issues balanced internally.  But in a person who is motivated solely by instincts and reaction, the challenging aspect of Pluto becomes the victim who becomes the perpetrator.

Often in a heinous crime such as this we find a transit of Jupiter, giving the individual the confidence to commit a crime that has long been a fantasy.  In Roeder's case, Jupiter along with Chiron and Neptune all made a trine to Roeder's progressed Sun.  The fact that the murder took place in a church leads one to think that Roeder likely fancied himself executing the Will of God under Jupiter's influence.  With the confidence of Jupiter as an ally and with Yahweh's "eye for an eye" proclamation as his inspiration, Roeder made his move.

More on Pirates: The Original Rebels

by Lynn Hayes

In the astrological language, Uranus is the planet of rebellion and revolution against the establishment.  The more repressive the establishment, the more radical the rebellious behavior becomes.  Yesterday I wrote about modern piracy being signified by the current opposition between Saturn, representing the repressive establishment, and Uranus, the rebel.

Johann Hari has an interesting article that has been widely published over the past few days called "You are being lied to about pirates":

Pirates were the first people to rebel against this world. They mutinied - and created a different way of working on the seas. Once they had a ship, the pirates elected their captains, and made all their decisions collectively, without torture. They shared their bounty out in what Rediker calls "one of the most egalitarian plans for the disposition of resources to be found anywhere in the eighteenth century".

They even took in escaped African slaves and lived with them as equals. The pirates showed "quite clearly - and subversively - that ships did not have to be run in the brutal and oppressive ways of the merchant service and the Royal Navy." This is why they were romantic heroes, despite being unproductive thieves.

The words of one pirate from that lost age, a young British man called William Scott, should echo into this new age of piracy. Just before he was hanged in Charleston, South Carolina, he said: "What I did was to keep me from perishing. I was forced to go a-pirateing to live." In 1991, the government of Somalia collapsed. Its nine million people have been teetering on starvation ever since - and the ugliest forces in the Western world have seen this as a great opportunity to steal the country's food supply and dump our nuclear waste in their seas. ...

At the same time, other European ships have been looting Somalia's seas of their greatest resource: seafood. We have destroyed our own fish stocks by overexploitation - and now we have moved on to theirs. More than $300m-worth of tuna, shrimp, and lobster are being stolen every year by illegal trawlers. The local fishermen are now starving. Mohammed Hussein, a fisherman in the town of Marka 100km south of Mogadishu, told Reuters: "If nothing is done, there soon won't be much fish left in our coastal waters."

This is the context in which the "pirates" have emerged. Somalian fishermen took speedboats to try to dissuade the dumpers and trawlers, or at least levy a "tax" on them. They call themselves the Volunteer Coastguard of Somalia - and ordinary Somalis agree. The independent Somalian news site WardheerNews found 70 per cent "strongly supported the piracy as a form of national defence"

read more here...

This view of pirates is a depiction of Uranian characters who seek social and economic revolution, rather than being motivated through greed.  When you are starving and desperate, and all around you are wealthy trading vessels, the raiding of those ships becomes a means to feed your family and community rather than an act of terrorism.  It is said "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter," and in the battle between Saturn and Uranus those lines are more clearly drawn.
