The mysterious Balloon Boy case

by Lynn Hayes

As the world knows by now, 6-year old Falcon Heene's parents called 911 emergency services on October 15, 2009 to report that young Falcoln had been abducted by an errant helium balloon.  The 911 call reported that Falcon had taken off in a homemade flying saucer, and the operator was skeptical from the beginning.  New details (it's TMZ, but still...) report that Falcon's father, Richard Heene, called the FAA first and then called a local TV station BEFORE calling 911.  The family wanted a news helicopter to follow the balloon.

The child was found that afternoon in a cardboard box in the garage.  In the "out of the mouths of babes" department, when asked on the Larry King show why Falcon didn't leave the garage, and his parents repeated the question to him, Falcon said "you guys said that we did this for the show."  That led to a very strong suspicion of a hoax which was confirmed on October 18.

I would love to see the father's chart as he seems to be the driver of this fun ride.

I found a date of birth (9/11/1961, no time or place indicated) for Falcon's father, RIchard Alan Heene Jr. on a website that exposes federal and state tax liens on a variety of individuals and companies.  I have no idea how accurate this information is, but it lists a wealth of information about the Heenes including tax liens and judgments going back to 1995.

This chart, which I emphasize is unreliable until it is confirmed elsewhere, reveals a Virgo Sun which one would not expect in this kind of individual who clearly has a hunger for fame, but it is unaspected (meaning it makes no aspect to any other planets in the chart).  The Sun represents the Self, the ego, and how well we are able to successfully individuate and when it is unaspected (or singleton) it reveals a lack of a sold sense of self or strong identity.  Brad Pitt has an unaspected Sun and we have seen how he seeks to define himself through his relationship and almost takes on the personas of the women with whom he becomes involved.

Heene seems to have an obsession with filming everything that he and his family do, which is one way to seek the mirroring that the weak Self requires in order to find itself.  Fame and notoriety, of course, is another.

This is a chart that lacks any tight squares (90 degree angles) unless you count Ceres, which I would not for these purposes.  Squares are difficult and can give us lots of problems, but they also force us to work through a crisis in order to gain inner strength.  From all reports, Heene was not a hard worker at anything.

I'm looking forward to finding a confirmed date of birth that perhaps will provide a bit more information.

Astrology and Rosh Hashanah

by Lynn Hayes

Here is a fascinating article about the astrological correlations of the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah:

According to rabbinical lore, Adam and Eve, our primal parents, were created on Rosh Hashanah, which traditionally falls on the New Moon of the seventh month (see quote above). A closer look at the biblical text reveals that God did not only create Adam and Eve on the sixth day, but also gave birth to the concept of relationships. Friday, Veneris in Latin, named after Venus, is the day Adam and Eve were born. The fact we were created under the influence of a benevolent planet is a reassurance that we cannot be that bad after all.

Since the biblical and zodiac year begins in Aries, then Libra, the seventh sign is the month mentioned in Leviticus. Libra, ruled by Venus, is the sign of relationship, marriage and contracts. The fact that our common ancestors, Adam and Eve, were created on a New Moon in Libra is a great sign for all of our relationships. It means that embedded in our mythological "DNA" is the potential of having harmonious and balanced relationships. To this affect, at least according to Astrology and the Bible, we are innately good.

On Rosh Hashanah it is a custom to blow the Shofar, the ram's horn. This ancient ritual is multi-layered and carries a great deal of symbolism. The Ram is associated with Aries, the sign that begins the biblical as well as Astrological New Year. On the zodiac wheel, Aries is located opposite Libra. Together they create the first set of opposing signs. You can say that Aries (ruled by Mars, the archetype of Adam) falls in love with Libra (ruled by Venus, the archetype of Eve) on Rosh Hashanah.

The symbolism of the New Moon of the Seventh Month goes even deeper considering the fact that Rosh Hashanah is celebrated precisely halfway through the zodiac. With six signs before and six signs after, Rosh Hashanah is a watershed of energies. According to astrology the year is divided into two main parts. The first half stretches from spring to the end of summer and is masculine and active, while the second half stretches from fall to the end of winter and is feminine and receptive. The borderline between these two halves is the Fall Equinox when the day and night, the masculine and feminine, are equal and balanced. That is the mythos-logic of having the Fall Equinox mark the beginning of the sign Libra, the sign of the scales. This year the Equinox takes place on September 22, a few days past Rosh Hashanah. Astrology asserts that in the masculine extrovert part of the year, which is now coming to a close, humanity is busy acting, doing, building, sawing, reaping, working, collecting and creating. During the feminine introvert part of the year, we are focused more on assessing, reevaluating, deepening, editing, processing, dreaming, healing and assimilating everything we have done in the active part of the year.

Read more here, including an explanation of the place that Saturn, Lord of Karma, has in this celebration of the Jewish New Year.  And let's try to leave Israel out of the comments for today.

September 9, 2009: 09-09-09

by Lynn Hayes

cherhill9.jpg
Nine is my favorite number, so I confess I have been looking forward to this day.  Nine is the number of completion and fulfillment at its most filling until it spills over into ten and demands a new beginning.

Astrologically, nine corresponds to Sagittarius and the Ninth House.  There is a sense of expansion and a world where life has meaning and everything is interconnected.  Nine is the perfection of three when multiplied by itself.  There are nine planets, nine major gods in the ancient pantheons, and larger pantheons are often divisible by the number nine.

Numerologically, however, the date 09-09-2009 translates to the number eleven (9 + 9 + 2 + 9 = 29, or 2 +9), a "master number" and the number of angelic presence.  Eleven is associated with Aquarius and the "lightbringers."  Eleven is the number of spiritual ascension and connection to multidimensional reality.

But will this day be different than any other?  That, my friends, is up to you alone.

Los Angeles wildfires and astrology

by Lynn Hayes

calif_fires2.jpg
Jerry asked in the comments about the relationship between the chart of Los Angeles and the current wildfires and I thought this would make a good post.  There are a couple of charts for Los Angeles.  The first one, which seems to be most widely used, is the September 4, 1781 date of the founding of the city by fourteen families as directed by King Carlos III of Spain.  The chart for this date has the Sun in Virgo, with the Moon in Aries.

The second date used is April 4, 1850, the date of the incorporation of the CIty of Los Angeles as an American city following the Mexican-American war.  Warning: geeky astrological details ahead.  This chart shows six planets in fiery Aries including a conjunction of Uranus and Pluto in Aries and a conjunction of the Sun and Saturn in Aries that forms a T-square to a Moon/Mars opposition.  Unfortunately, the time of incorporation is not known.

The incorporation chart makes more sense to me because Los Angeles is a uniquely American city and its founding as a pueblo was really a different incarnation than what we have today.  The chart also makes more sense, although as you know if you read this column I try not to select charts based on whether or not they "work."  We all made that mistake with Susan Boyle when the initial birthdate, which worked very nicely with our imagination of who Susan Boyle might be, turned out to be incorrect.

Aries the sign of initiation and inspiration, but it is also the sign that is ruled by the God of War.  There is an aggressive energy to Aries that cannot be denied.  Following the incorporation of the city following the victory of the US over the Mexicans in 1850, some of the residents rebelled against the new Anglo powers in a full-scale revolt.  Los Angeles had the highest murder rate of the entire nation.  (Source: Wikipedia)

It's said of Los Angeles that there are four seasons: fire, earthquakes, mudslides and riots.  That is mirrored by Mars (fire and aggression) in watery Cancer, squared by Saturn (compression and restriction) in Aries (fire), all tightly aspecting the Sun or the Spirit of the city.  The Capricorn Moon holds everything together with an inbred desire for success in all things, but Saturn is always creating challenges there.

The current spate of wildfires were a surprise because they began before the expected wildfire season in the fall when the Santa Ana winds begin to blow.  These fires started as transiting Mars entered Cancer on August 26th and formed an exact opposition to Pluto (see my articles about this from last week).  Conflict between the God of War (Mars) and the Lord of Destruction (Pluto) can be quite intense, and in this case both planets formed a stressful square to Mercury in the Los Angeles chart.  Mercury rules communication, and the "Station Fire" has threatened transmission towers for television and radio stations at the Mount Wilson Observatory site.

The State of California also contains the Uranus/Pluto conjunction in Aries.  What an intense time that was (1849-1851), the time of the goldrush and lawlessness across the American West.  Jupiter, Chiron and Neptune are all in the later degrees of Aquarius and forming a harmonious trine to the Uranus/Pluto conjunction both the L.A. chart and the California chart, particularly back in May when the fires started and Jupiter was in an exact trine to both Uranus and Pluto.

Where art and astrology combine

A collaboration of abstract paintings by Denver artist Tracy Weil and "horoscope-inspired poems" by writer Drew Myron is on display in Colorado at the National Center for Atmospheric Research.  The exhibit, called "Forecast," will also feature astrology readings although the article doesn't say who will do the readings.

Myron and Weil call themselves "amateur astrologists," so I hope they are not the ones doing the readings.  Astrologist technically isn't a real word.
