Pluto in Capricorn and the new age of Aquarius

Here is a beautiful little movie that examines the reality of world change, the destruction of life as we know it, and the potential that we have to create real transformation.
"What if the world embodied our highest potential? What would it look like? As the structures of modern society crumble, is it enough to respond with the same tired solutions? Or are we being called to question a set of unexamined assumptions that form the very basis of our civilization?

This 25-minute retrospective asks us to reflect on the state of the world and ourselves, and to listen more closely to what is being asked of us at this time of unprecedented global transformation."

Sunday Poetry for Poetry Month

by Lynn Hayes

Beliefnet is going to run a feature for Poetry Month and asked us to do a post on our favorite poem.  I wondered how I would be able to choose, and then remembered an old poem I wrote back in 1976 that I really love, so this is my poem for Poetry Month.

Praise Song

Oh, glory to the stars that shine
In everlasting splendor,
their sparkling dust of joy to fall
upon the blossoming heart, the tender rose
that smiles here below the sky.
Wisps of harmonies catch the strings within the spirit
and dancing gently round them,
bring them laughing into play, to sing
love's cosmic melody, its touch
upon the lute within
     begins to weave resounding
           trails of voices singing,
ringing to the sky with joy
the praises of this life.

Finding the balance between surrender and power

by Lynn Hayes

change the world.jpg
I was listening last night to a podcast on the subject of making money in a bad economy, and one of the recommendations was to turn off the news so as not to create fear in one's consciousness. "What we don't know won't hurt us" appeared to be the general theme.

I would strongly disagree.  If we are to be fully empowered, consciously creative beings on a planet in which we create our own reality, we must be aware of the dynamics of the world around us.  In this era of globalization, where we truly are one world and everything each individual does affects the entire planet, it is more important than ever to remain informed about the truth behind the lives that we lead.

Certainly we do not want to become lost in a morass of fear and despair and helplessness at the terrible situation the world is in at any given moment.  But our human existence is a series of cycles, and this is where astrology comes in to provide assistance.  We have been talking for years about the advent of Pluto's entry into Capricorn, and we were not surprised by the events that followed.  We are looking ahead at the upcoming square between Uranus and Pluto in 2013, and we know that there will be an increase in social strife and conflict.  But we also understand that these cycles are divinely guided, and part of the ongoing story of life in a body on Planet Earth.

On the one hand, we must surrender to those things over which we have no control.  This has nothing to do with being religious: I know many people who would call themselves religious whose faith in times of strife offers them no peace or comfort.  But the relative predictability of the movement of the planets to me offers a sense of surrender and trust in the Consciousness that guides planetary motion and the cycles of our lives.

Awareness of these cycles gives us an understanding of the nature of events that are presently occurring, and this empowers us.  We can then work with the energy of the planets rather than be tossed around with no direction or purpose.  In the same way, the more we know about the political and economic situation in the world around us, the more influence we can have on these situations, whether directly or indirectly.  While it's true that as we as individuals grow and evolve we naturally have a transformative effect on those around us and the planet as a whole, there is also a need to remain engaged and a fully active member of the community.

In my opinion, the stakes are too high in today's world to crawl into a cave and retreat until the dust settles.  Like Mahatma Ghandi and other spiritual leaders who became political figures, we can be effective members of community and keep our spiritual experience intact.  The key is surrender to that which we cannot control, and to continue to grow as individuals with the personal power to be able to change that which can be altered.  Fear arises when we feel helpless; power and love are the antidotes.

It's official! Optimism can save your life

by Lynn Hayes

thinkyoucan.jpeg

For years, researchers have been studying optimists and pessimists, and they have found that an optimistic outlook carries certain advantages. Optimistic people are better achievers, are more resilient in the face of difficulties and cope with stress more easily than their more negative counterparts. And now, there appears to be one more reason for wearing those "rose-colored glasses"--a longer, healthier life!

In a new study, researchers at the University of Pittsburgh reviewed questionnaires that surveyed the personality traits of more than 100,000 women aged 50 and over who are participants of the Women's Health Initiative, an ongoing government study that began in 1994. They tracked the women's rates of death and chronic health conditions for an average of eight years. What they found was a strong link between optimism and a person's risk for cancer, heart disease and early death. ...

So, where does optimism come from? For some lucky people, being optimistic comes naturally. But experts say that for those who aren't as fortunate, optimism is an attitude that can be learned and practiced. By avoiding negative environments, making every effort to seek the company of positive individuals and celebrating your strengths instead of bemoaning your weaknesses, even pessimists can begin to exercise their optimistic muscle. Just remember: It's better to light a candle than to curse the darkness.

read more here...

I grew up in a family where negativity was encouraged and optimism was punished, and with Saturn on my Sun I am not a natural optimist.  However, after being shoved out of the nest at a relatively early age I had to fend for myself, which meant I was able to begin making choices about the kind of people I wanted to surround myself with.  I learned that the more upbeat my friends were, the better I felt around them and slowly I began to absorb their way of thinking.  Later in life I made this a practice and called it Visioncrafting, a process I teach today.  Reframing the way you think can have a powerful effect on your life AND your health.

This does not mean that we should bury our heads in the sand and ignore problems and difficulties.  That's not a healthy approach either.  But if we train ourselves to look for the positive in every situation while honoring the challenge of the difficulty, we will eventually be able to transform our lives in ways we never thought possible!

My editor Valerie Reiss writes about this in her new blog Fresh Living.  Pay her a visit and give her some love, she's the one who found me and gave me this opportunity to expand my audience.

The Declaration of Service Pledge

Last night at dinner, my friend Andrea said "Don't you feel that we need to do something to be the change.gifhelp the new President make the change we are looking for?  He will need our help!"  Here is an opportunity to do just that.  The Declaration of Service says, in part:

WE BELIEVE in the ideals that define America: liberty, equality, and justice.
WE BELIEVE the idea of America is ennobled, and the future of America is strengthened, when Americans come together to serve their country.
WE BELIEVE there is no challenge that cannot be met with the energy, creativity, and determination of the American people.
WE BELIEVE all individuals can make a difference and anyone can be great because anyone can serve. ...
WE ARE READY TO SERVE WE CALL on each other and leaders from all sectors of American life, private, public, and non-profit, to work together to create ample opportunities for citizens to serve their communities, their country, and the world.
WE ENCOURAGE all communities to build upon the strength of our nation's diversity of ideas, experience, and perspectives as we unite to serve.
WE ARE READY to meet the challenges of our time. We are ready to do our part in America's timeless quest for a more perfect union, and I am ready to begin now by adding my name to this Declaration.
I signed the pledge, and committed to provide at least 50 hours of service annually to my local community, which is about an hour a week.  There's something very different about donating your actual time and physical body to a cause, rather than just throwing money at it.  In the past I have volunteered at animal shelters, tutoring middle school children, and in nursing homes.  My mother has been looking for a volunteer opportunity recently, and in volunteering together with her perhaps I can accomplish two goals at one time.

You can search here for local events in your community, for Martin Luther King Day (tomorrow) and beyond.

I encourage you to sign the pledge and commit with me to helping to bring the change we want to see in our nation.  Under the astrological passage beginning last year of the planet Pluto, ruler of Transformation, through the sign of Capricorn which deals with social structures, governments and businesses, there is no doubt that our world is being transformed.  If we want change, we must be that change.  Let's work together to make it happen!
