Mercury takes a turn

by Lynn Hayes

Even people who don't believe in astrology believe in Mercury retrograde.  I usually start hearing it around the office co-op where I spend my days about a week into the retrograde period.  "Is Mercury retrograde?" people start asking me.  Email can get glitchy, computer and other equipment starts to fail, contracts take forever to negotiate.

Well folks, Mercury turned direct this morning so it's moving in the right direction again, but it will be in the news for a little while longer.  Mercury is still within a degree or so of an opposition to Uranus, and the thoughts and ideas are coming faster than we can moderate them.  This can lead to errors and miscommunication, especially since one Mercury is past Uranus it bumps right into Saturn on October 7.

Mercury is in Virgo right now, one of the signs it rules, so it is happy coming up with great ideas and perfecting them.  But Mercury is less happy with the kind of intense flood of data that pours forth from the opposition to Uranus.

This is a great time for writing and planning a lecture or conference, but the implementation will be easier after the 7th.

A challenging planetary week ahead

by Lynn Hayes

anger.jpg
Mercury is the planet that rules over communication, the transmission of information and the operation of small machinery, and for the next week or so it will be under stress, potentially causing disruptions in the way we communicate with others and the smooth operation of business.

Mercury is in its own sign of Virgo where it is usually practical and logical, good with details and effective in creating order out of the routine of day-to-day life.  It is approaching a conjunction to Saturn which will encourage us to take a more serious approach to the everyday workings of our life.  This is a time to knuckle down and honor responsibilities rather than seek the freedom of our individuality.

Mars is the planet that stimulates desire and passion, and it is in Mercury's other sign of Gemini.  A heightened intensity in communication is one of the hallmarks of Mars in Gemini and we are certainly seeing this with the fervor exhibited in the Town Hall meetings over health care that began last week when Mars (aggression) made a square to Saturn (authority figures)..

Mars in Gemini also seeks new experiences and does not like to be tied down, and as Mercury gets closer to the conjunction (a challenging aspect)  to Saturn it will also square Mars which will exacerbate the heightened passions that we are seeing and perhaps feeling as well.

Mars is raw energy, and offers the potential to harness that energy and utilize it to accomplish our goals.  However, these are challenging aspects that make it necessary to use a conscious application of WIll in order to focus this energy in a specific direction and mobilize our intentions.

The exact square from Mercury to  Mars will occur on August 27, so this tension is likely to prevail until then and will be most problematic for those of us with planets in the later degrees of the mutable signs (Virgo, Pisces, Gemini, Sagittarius).

Mercury square Saturn, and Uranus prepares to retrograde

by Lynn Hayes

orion-nebula-hubble.jpg
Mercury is moving into position today to form a square to Saturn tomorrow.  Mercury, the Winged Messenger, presides over not only messages and communication but also the way we process our experiences through our conscious awareness.  In Gemini, its own sign, it is particularly facile and communication typically flows without interruption.

Saturn will put the brakes on that easy flow for a few days.  Saturn, lord of restriction, karma and time, stops the presses while corrections are made.  Saturn demands that we apply focus and diligence to all of our communication projects.  This is not a time for easy promises; accountability is required for the next few days until Mercury has moved out of range of the square.

Meanwhile Uranus has slowed down to a standstill in preparation for its change of direction on July 2nd, and between now and then we will begin to see the force of change dominate the news to a greater extent than before.  Watch for destabilization of the financial markets and political structures in general.  Uranus is retrograding back for its last passage through Pisces before it moves into Aries next year, and in my view this demands a wakeup call.

Uranus is known as "The Awakener" and Pisces rules sleep, and while Uranus has been in Pisces (since 2003) the disruption (Uranus) from the longing for the unconscious (Pisces) has been powerful.  Uranus will move into Aries in 2010 and there will be no more opportunity for sleep.  This then is a good time to begin to prepare for Uranus entering Aries by completing the awakening process within our own lives.  Where are we stuck in subconscious reactions to situations?  Where do we limit ourselves by taking the easy road?  Uranus always asks the question:  Where in our lives can we be more authentic?  While Uranus is retrograde we will have a deeply personal opportunity to discover the answers to these questions.

"The Personals Meet the Transpersonal" and other Planetary news

Thanks to KT The Astrologer for posting this lovely article on the conjunction right now of Uranus to Mercury and Venus (perhaps that's why most of my day has been spent dealing with malfunctioning telecommunications equipment??):
It can be a very interesting time when a personal planet conjuncts a transpersonal planet in the sky as both are functioning from very different levels.

So when they meet it's like the college student and the 2nd grader working on the same project.

This is what is happening on the 27th and 28th, except the college student is asked to work with two 2nd graders.

The conjunction of Uranus, Mercury and Venus has us dealing with the needs of the personality meshing with the viewpoint from higher consciousness.

Uranus needs things to change, to break free and to disrupt. Its energy is about the greater good and trying to create a better future and it will do this any way it can.

Mercury in entrenched in the mind and serves the personality. Venus with its need for relating and indulging also likes to keep the ego happy.

When they band together we experience a rather radical shift in perception and values.

Our relationships, finances and our take on ourselves aesthetically will undergo a tremor of around 5.5 on the 'astrological Richter scale' Our ideas surrounding these issues may be rocked and a whole new way of thinking will being to crack open.

This triple conjunction is exactly sextile Jupiter right now, the culmination of a cycle which has taken all month to perfect and would typically bring about an expansion (Jupiter) of innovation and exciting change (Uranus). However, pesky Chiron and Neptune, which are fused now in Aquarius, are inconjunct (30 degrees) both Jupiter and Uranus, squeezing a wedge between their joyous party. Chiron inconjunct Uranus is bringing up all of those things that no one wants to hear but which must be said, and inconjunct Jupiter it helps to facilitate conversation and the healing of ideologies which have lost their luster. The Neptune component adds just enough mist to create some confusion and potential for illusion. A murky road to say the least!

Venus and Mercury break away from the Jupiter/Uranus party by early next week when Mercury will be squared by Pluto and we'll REALLY see some enthusiastic discussions! --------

Mercury in Pisces and the Power of Silence

Ocean Magic, by Willow Arlenea

Mercury moved into Pisces a couple of days ago following on the heels of Venus, ending the stellium (grouping) of planets in Aquarius. Where Mercury in Aquarius seeks intelligently reasoned dialogue and, though rather insensitive, is concerned about social justice in Pisces Mercury seeks magic and mystery and connection with the divine.

Although traditional astrologers will say that Mercury is in its detriment in Pisces because its ability to think rationally is affected by Pisces' watery nature which tends to act like a psychic sponge and the boundaries between reality and the mystic are often blurred, for spiritual matters Mercury is at its best in Pisces where it is unaffected by personal ego and rigid belief systems.

The psychic sensitivity that Mercury in Pisces (or in the twelfth house of your natal chart) engenders makes it necessary to spend periods of time in solitude and silence so that the psyche can be cleaned of external impressions. Beth Owl's Daughter has been discussing the customs of fasting that many cultures have adopted during the period leading up to the Spring Equinox, including of course the Christian custom of fasting at Lent.

Beth writes:
I have come to believe that our Western emphasis on intellect, analysis and the mighty mind, rather than being an asset, is often a handicap. I am fortunate to travel in social circles with people who are astonishingly smart, articulate and creative in wordy ways. And I, myself, admittedly also aspire to this. But I am beginning to suspect that those kinds of brilliance, as important as they are in some ways, ultimately hamper our understanding and knowledge of who we are.

I have observed that one of the last socially acceptable forms of arrogance and bigotry is that of "intelligence." Few of us question what that actually means, and fewer consider that "intelligence" may be only an arbitrary, possibly meaningless description. Perhaps it is no more important to the truth of our identity than the color of our skin, our age, or our gender.

I have also noticed how "intelligence" and intellect frequently interfere with magic. Have you ever been at a concert where the music had swept you to realms of rapture, only to overhear the people behind you discussing the performer's technique, or how they heard a better rendition last year, or analyzing the merits of the composer's earlier works? Perhaps that is how some people believe they are "enjoying" the music - by processing it through the data banks, and sparring with one another over the breadth of their knowledge.

But I wonder.

We have made it seem natural and admirable to have constant analysis and commentary of every single aspect of our lives. We give one another verbal validation or criticism. We process our experiences with words, and verbalization has been inextricably linked to what defines us as the intelligent apes.

Yet the power of silence cannot be overstated.
The use, or non-use, of words and language for the purposes of magic and imagination is what Mercury in Pisces is all about. With Mercury in Pisces the inner landscape becomes rich and colorful, a gorgeous tapestry of thoughts, ideas and dreams. Let us embrace the enhancement of our dream world during this time, and use it to our advantage!
