RIP Ted Kennedy

by Lynn Hayes

Kennedy (2).jpg
Ted Kennedy died last night of brain cancer at the age of 77.  He was a controversial figure in many ways, but there is no denying that he was a tireless champion for the rights of those less fortunate than he.  He is also the last of the iconic Kennedy political family that wielded political influence in the United States for fifty years.

Kennedy was a man with great compassion, as we can see with the Sun in sensitive Pisces opposed by Neptune, ruler of Pisces, and the Moon.  Neptune and Pisces seek an experience of Universal Bliss and are associated with spirituality and spiritual compassion, but also with a desire to escape the boundaries of ordinary reality.  A propensity towards alcoholism and other addictions are frequently seen in a strong Pisces nature, and Kennedy was no exception.

Still, the extreme empathy that is bestowed by Neptune and Pisces combined in Kennedy's chart with a Capricorn ascendant that gave him the ability to focus and work diligently to accomplish his goals.  A combination of Mars (drive) and Mercury (communication) in Aquarius, the sign of new ideas and social justice, propelled him ever forwards to design new ways of creating greater balance in the American economic system.

Senator Kennedy was diagnosed with brain cancer last May, as transiting Chiron made the first swipe of a square to his natal Chiron.  Chiron is the planet(oid, some say) that presides over the body/mind/spirit balance of an individual and is therefore often present when there is illness of some kind.  The first phase of the Chiron square cycle occurred in March, but Kennedy was not hospitalized until May when the Full Moon hit a sensitive Mars/Mercury conjunction in his chart.

The final square of Chiron to Kennedy's Chiron just occurred about ten days before his seizure earlier this year, and at the time of the seizure transiting Mars was exactly opposite Pluto in Kennedy's chart, squaring the conjunction of his progressed Mercury (mind) and Uranus (electricity/nervous system) that I wrote about back in May 2008 when Kennedy was first diagnosed:  "The fact that Kennedy's progressed Mercury is conjunct progressed Uranus right now is also interesting, echoing this Mercury/Uranus connection that electrifies the brain and creates an experience that changes everything.

Chiron was present once again at the time of death as Kennedy's progressed Sun made an exact conjunction to Chiron in his birthchart.

Although his Republican colleagues criticized him relentlessly, they were also extremely fond of him and he was able to bridge the conservative/liberal gap better than most politicians.  It appears significant that his death concurs with the opposition of Saturn (conservatism) and Uranus (liberalism) currently aligning in the sky.  He may be the last bridge of reason between those two extremes of ideology.

Columnist Bob Novak has died

Novak.jpgby Lynn Hayes

Robert Novak, the self-proclaimed "Prince of Darkness," died today at the age of 78.  Novak called himself the "stirrer-up of strife" and is most famous for having outed CIA agent Valerie Plame in a kerfuffle that led to the imprisonment of Dick Cheney's aide Scooter Libby.  Novak was also famously called "The Douchebag of Liberty" by the Daily Show's Jon Stewart.

My readers may be surprised to learn that Novak's astrological chart reveals (February 26, 1931, time unknown, Joliet IL)  Pisces Sun which opposed Neptune, the ruler of Pisces.  We astrologers have a sophisticated technical term for this - we call it a "double whammy" - a double signature connecting the Sun, or Self, with the Neptune/Pisces quest for sublimation and redemption.  Novak often talked of his spiritual conversion to Catholicism at the age of 67.  Novak, who was Jewish, attributed this conversion to a "spiritual hunger" and with his wife experimented with a number of different churches.

In researching this article I discovered that Novak did indeed have the soft side and the compassion that we associate with Pisces and Neptune, although it certainly never showed on television or in his columns.  He was on the Board of Directors for the Youth Leadership Fellowship in Washington DC, helping at-risk youth in DC's poorest neighborhoods.

The Bob Novak that most of us saw is reflected in the conjunction of Venus to Saturn in his chart, and both in the dour sign of Capricorn.  Capricorn is the hard worker - the diligent and responsible realist who is more concerned with success and achievement than family.  The conjunction of Venus to Saturn shows someone who is insecure in their ability to establish relationships and to be liked, and again we have a "double whammy" with Venus in Capricorn, conjunct Saturn which is the ruler of Capricorn.

To make things more complicated and impact his self-esteem even more, Pluto in the chart is opposite both Saturn and Venus which (a) brings about a certain amount of painful  experiences; and (b) adds that dark element to Novak's personality with which we are so familiar.

Novak was a born rebel, with a challenging square from Jupiter (righteousness and philosophy) to Uranus (rebellion and radical change).  His conservatism, according to his astrological chart, was likely based more on a rebellion against what he saw as a softening of principles that would have been abhorred by the Pluto/Saturn opposition which demands strength and power. I suspect that there was an ongoing battle within him between the softness of the Pisces/Neptune and the hard and tough rebellion of the other planetary pieces of his chart. This kind of inner conflict often hardens our beliefs and makes it difficult for us to see reason.

He had been battling brain cancer over the past two years as transiting Saturn (challenges and restriction) opposed his Sun and squared his Gemini Moon.  He first realized he had cancer on July 23, 2008 when he accidentally hit a pedestrian with his car.  At the time, transiting Mars (action) was conjunct Saturn as it opposed his Sun.

President Obama's solar return

by Lynn Hayes

You can read my profile of Barack Obama here.

Obama solar return.jpg
The Solar Return occurs at the moment that the Sun returns to its place in the birthchart.  That is often the birthday, but sometimes it is a day or two off.  More than just a time to celebrate the time of your birth, it's actually a planetary cycle that begins a new when the Sun returns to its natal place.  The Sun illumines the Self and inspires us to fulfill the destiny that was given to us in the Sun sign, and the Solar Return shines a window into the manner in which that process might happen over the next year.

President Obama's Solar Return occurred at 3:33 pm today (August 4).  This is an interesting number, but that's for another story.  The Sun in the SR chart is in the Eighth House, the house of power, death, sexuality and taxes.  The President is clearly in charge of two of those aspects of the Eighth House, and I suspect that the other two will come into play at some point as well.  In the Eighth House we learn to read and understand the balances of power that pervade our every experience, but the Eighth House also calls on us to dive deep below the superficial.  Obama sailed into office on a sea of popularity which has been diminishing as the reality of the challenges the country face sets in.  This will be the year that tests his ability to hold and distribute the power of the Eighth House.

The only aspect to the Sun is a harmonious sextile from Mars that suggests that he will have a degree of success in achieving this.  Mars provides energy and passion to get things done, and Mars in the SR chart is in Gemini where much is achieved through discussion and the transmission of ideas.  That Mars is in the Seventh House of marriage and partnerships, so I suspect there will be fair amount of conflict in the White House and not just with Michelle.  If I were a predicting sort of astrologer I would predict that Obama becomes more independent (Mars) from the partnerships that he has made in his first year in office, particularly Rahm Emanuel and Lawrence Summers.  That Seventh House Mars is a team player mostly when the team is on his side.

Sagittarius is rising in the Solar Return chart, so optimism and faith will continue to be a big part of his message.  However, the Moon is in the last degree of Capricorn and it tightly conjoins the North Node, suggesting an almost desperate (last degree) effort to put the new structures (Capricorn) in motion that will support Obama's sense of his destiny (North Node).

Saturn, the Celestial Taskmaster, sits prominently on the Virgo Midheaven of the Solar Return chart, revealing that either (a) the amount of work that Obama has to do this year will be overwhelming and he will be crushed under the pressure, or (b) Obama will persist and apply the creative power of discipline and hard work and will be fantastically successful in his endeavors.

The big challenge in this chart is the opposition of Pluto to Venus in Cancer in the Solar Return chart that echoes the square of transiting Pluto to Venus in the natal chart.  This astrological double whammy does not bode well for partnerships of any kind.  When Pluto hit Obama's Venus for the first round his association with his pastor Jeremiah Wright came to an end.  Pluto rules nuclear power and destruction that precedes rebirth, and in connection with Venus it has a tendency to blow up relationships, particularly if they have outlived their purpose.  This will be an interesting year from that perspective.

The transits and progressions for the next year are fairly positive for President Obama.  He has numerous Jupiter transits which tend to bring luck and good fortune, particularly the continuing transit of Jupiter over the Ascendant of his natal chart (personal identity) which began in April.  This bodes well for his confidence and ability to inspire confidence and others which is critical in a leader.

Saturn trines his natal Saturn in September which is another portent of success that rewards hard work, but it will then go on to conjunct the Sun in his progressed chart, revealing that challenges await in October.  November will be particularly difficult for him as Saturn becomes locked in a square to Pluto that aspects Venus in the natal chart.  This again suggests shakeups in partnerships of all kinds.  Watch for changes in the White House staff as a result.

All in all though, it looks like a fairly positive year for Obama and while there are some stressful planetary cycles, the large number of Jupiter events should carry him through with a strong degree of success.

Update: 8/5 am. I'm on vacation and missed the publication of a supposed Kenyan birth certificate for Obama that was just released before the Full Moon minor eclipse today.  The Full Moon opposes Obama's Sun, so the timing of this is interesting.  This website has an interesting discussion on the various points surrounding the Kenyan birth certificate.

Sarah and Todd Palin may be on the skids

by Lynn Hayes

Sarah Palin's rep is denying the story, but but Alaska insiders are reporting that the Palins are getting a divorce and that this news is why Palin resigned as governor.  Even the mainstream news reported that Todd was left behind after the new governor was sworn in, setting tongues a-wagging. And it has been reported that Sarah is no longer wearing her wedding ring.

Please forgive me as I take this opportunity to gloat, since I predicted this in my earlier post about Sarah Palin's resignation:

I suspect that Palin's husband Todd may have been behind her resignation.  He has evidently been her greatest supporter and played an active role in the care of their children, and transiting Pluto (death, rebirth and transformation) has been in a challenging square formation to Venus (relationships) in her chart since January (it came very close last ; summer;at the time she was nominated), and the second phase of that cycle is coming to a head now.  A transit of Pluto to Venus can be very difficult for a marriage that is not in good shape, and any unsettled business is sure to come to a head under this influence.

It will be interesting to see what comes of this, but it would explain Palin's resignation much better than some of the other stories we've heard.

More on the astrology of Sonia Sotomayor

by Lynn Hayes

Sotomayor-hearing-to-begin-July-13.jpg
Mary Plumb at The Mountain Astrologer has posted an interesting comparison of the chart of Sonia Sotomayor with the chart for the US.  An interesting point in Mary's excellent article is that Ms. Sotomayor was born with Mercury having just turned retrograde.  Because it had just changed direction, Mercury was moving slowly at the time of her birth, As Mary writes, "The very slowly moving Mercury at birth shows a deliberate turn of mind."  However, Mercury conjoins Uranus which tends to denote an original thinker, one who is not encumbered by rules or what others think.

Ms. Sotomayor's Cancer stellium lines up rather nicely with the Cancer stellium in the US chart, suggesting a deep connection and a loyalty of Ms. Sotomayor to the US.  However, her Sun/Mars opposition, which gives her an outspoken personality and the courage to speak her mind, puts her Mars (aggression) exactly opposite the conjunction of Venus and Jupiter in the US chart.  She is sure to create some controversy and tension (Mars) in the court, and by extension, in the way that some Americans view the traditional values (Venus/Jupiter) upon which they have come to rely.
