Kanye West: The latest in a string of jackass moments

by Lynn Hayes

Kanye West has never been known for his humility or circumspect behavior.  I wrote a post on him a couple of years ago after he compared himself to Jesus, and since then he hasn't really mellowed much.

But his behavior on Sunday night's Video Music Awards program on MTV was really astonishing.   Snatching the microphone away from Taylor Swift, winner in the "Best Female Video" category, he ranted that Beyonce should have won.

President Obama called him a "jackass," and who can argue with him.  Just days before, South Carolina Representative Joe Wilson interrupted Obama's speech to call him a liar, and then there was Serena Williams' own jackass moment.  Still...the reactions to these events have appeared to be overamplified, leading a commenter calling him/herself the Cynical Astrologer to note: "hysterical overreacting--from CNN on 9/11 to Joe Wilson, Serena Williams, et al to astrologers everywhere--is the main manifestation of th[e Saturn/Uranus opposition] aspect."

There is such a sense now of opposition with this aspect, as I discussed the other day, that these events have a reach that extend far beyond the immediacy of their obnoxiousness.  I was invited today to join a Facebook group: 1,000,000 people against Joe Wilson.  The problem is, the greater a reaction to an event, the greater the apparent significance that event takes on.  Instead, we all take sides and the controversy expands and grows, expanding conflict and making compromise more and more impossible.

I hope that this is merely a function of the Saturn/Uranus opposition, which peaks today for the third time.  We do have two more phases of this cycle, but with Pluto having turned direct I'd like to think we can now move forward with some more important issues.

Kris Allen and Adam Lambert: the New American Idols

by Lynn Hayes

kris_allen.jpg
Kris Allen sped ahead of the pack last night to take home the American Idol crown in a surprise upset over Adam Lambert, who had been expected to win.  Allen's surprising victory echoed last year's surprise win by David Cook (profiled by me in this earlier article)

Kris has an interesting astrological chart that should blow away a few concepts.  First of all, five planets are retrograde in his chart, a phenomenon that is relatively rare but which has traditionally been associated with bad luck and an inability to achieve one's goals.  While it's true that retrograde planets can make it more difficult to move forward in one's life because we are always being pulled back into the past, a strong intention and focus can overcome any planetary difficulty in the birthchart.

Kris has the Sun in Cancer, the sign of family ties and caring for others, and it opposes Neptune almost exactly.  Neptune/Sun aspects are often connected to an affinity for music and sometimes, depending on the rest of the chart, musical talent  (David Cook has a Sun/Neptune conjunction). When Neptune and the Sun combine there is also usually a strong spiritual component in the life.

With the Sun in shy Cancer and a Neptune/Sun opposition which can make it difficult to forge a strong identity, we would not have expected Kris to be someone who seeks the limelight.  His Leo Moon inspires a craving for fame and recognition, and to be celebrated for his talents, but it is squared by Saturn which inhibits him from seeking this kind of recognition.  Saturn also opposes Venus, which enhances this sense of inhibition and shyness.  But according to the judges, it was just that low-key sensitivity that won him the American Idol crown.

Evidently Kris only auditioned because his brother Daniel talked him into coming along with him, and Kris may never have gotten to the American Idol stage if it weren't for Pluto.  Pluto is in a trine formation to the Sun in Kris's birthchart which helps to keep him on a steady path of transformation in his life despite the retrograde planets and Saturn T-square system with the Moon and Venus.

Pluto is the planet of transformation, and transits of Pluto are often feared for their intensity and power to change our lives completely.  Pluto first began an opposition cycle to Kris's Sun back in January of 2008, and the second hit of the cycle occurred in June, just before the auditions in July 2008.  By the time the results were announced in February of 2009, transiting Pluto was in a harmonious sextile formation to Pluto in his chart.

The harmonious Pluto cycles bring opportunity to let go of the past and begin a completely new phase of our lives.  Harmonious cycles are usually pleasant but they don't normally bring about huge events like winning American Idol, but a combination of a harmonious Pluto cycle with a challenging one like the opposition of Pluto to Kris's Sun create a dynamic force of events.

The victory by the soft-spoken Christian with conservative values over the more flamboyant

and probably gay glam-rocker have raised a few eyebrows.  Is this a symptom of the culture war going on as symbolized by the ongoing opposition of Saturn in the sky (conservative values) to Uranus (change and innovation)?  Or is this just a question of American Idol voters preferring someone who is more like them, a really nice guy from America's heartland with simple values, to a more flamboyant artist with clearly exceptional talent but who is less approachable?

Adam Lambert has the Sun in Aquarius, and it conjuncts Mercury which is often seen as a planetary combination which signifies a desire to take on many roles including a more androgynous personality.  Aquarius has an open mind and embraces that which is different and new, and where Kris has that Saturn T-square which contracts and creates a desire for conservatism, Adam has a square of Jupiter (expansion, confidence) to his Sun.  He is not afraid to be who he is and to have that sense of Self be as large as possible.

Adam's chart is being torched right now by the triple conjunction of Jupiter (good fortune), Chiron (wounding and healing) and Neptune (confusion and creativity) in a harmonious aspect to both Neptune and Pluto in his natal chart.  This is a significant time for him, and while he may not have won the competition I suspect that this is just the beginning for his career.

Susan Boyle and the Zeitgeist of the Chiron/Neptune conjunction

by Lynn Hayes

for an in-depth look at the astrology of Susan Boyle and details on her birth date and time, please refer to this earlier article.

The timing of the fervor over Susan Boyle has struck me, coinciding as it does with the conjunction of Chiron and Neptune which are now less than a degree apart.  An interesting blog by Dr. Robert Canfield who is an anthropologist at the University of St. Louis sums this up quite nicely:

Buried within the human psyche are feelings, yearnings, anxieties too deep for words, usually. Only sometimes do we see it in ourselves. Always it is something outside ourselves that touches us, somehow, where we feel most deeply. At such moments we remember that we are humans -- not mere living creatures, but human beings, profoundly and deeply shaped by a moral sensibility so powerful that it breaks through our inhibitions; it can burst out, explode into public view, to our own astonishment. And sometimes that objective form -- a person, an event, an object, a song -- embodies deeply felt sensibilities for a lot of us at once, so that we discover how much we share in our private worlds, worlds otherwise inaccessible to anyone one else. It becomes a social event, so we can all rejoice, and weep, together.

This beautifully mirrors the effect of the conjunction of Chiron and Neptune.  Chiron presides over those feelings and anxieties that are too deep for words, and Neptune rules the yearning for the soul to experience something more transcendent than our ordinary lives.  In these pages we have discussed the pain and fear that have erupted with this conjunction, but the eruption of emotion that has resulted from the Susan Boyle video touches the very zeitgeist of our modern culture.

The superficiality of modern life (particularly over the past 15 years as Pluto transited through Sagittarius and brought with it the rise of celebrity journalism and Botox) has no doubt planted some deep anxieties and despair into western society as we struggled to bring a deeper meaning into our lives.  Chiron opens the doorway to the despair and unleashes it, and the addition of the Neptunian influence brings with it a longing for something more real, for a deeper meaning that will show us the way to a higher experience of our lives.  This to me is the symbolism of the Susan Boyle phenomenon.  An ordinary middle-aged woman taps into something quite extraordinary in the mass consciousness of the affluent West that has had its full of perfectly Botoxed faces and middle-aged bodies that require four hours of exercise to maintain their youth.

I am fairly certain that this phenomenon has not been as strong in, say, parts of Pakistan and Burma where life is a daily struggle to survive.  I doubt that in the Congo, in the midst of a brutal civil war, people have been as overwhelmed by the success of Susan Boyle as the Americans and Brits.  It is only in the jaded West, where the success of musicians depends upon their photogenic good looks and ability to act in music videos, that the beautiful song of an average-looking woman has touched the hearts of so many.
