Everything is in opposition under Saturn and Uranus

by Lynn Hayes

tug-of-war.jpg
Saturn and Uranus are now within two degrees of their exact opposition which culminates on September 15.  As you probably now, Saturn represents conservative thinking and conventional behavior, and Uranus represents that which is new and innovative.

Perhaps this wasn't the best time to roll out healthcare reform in the United States, since oppositional defiance is occurring not only between the Democrats and Republicans, but in splinter groups within the parties as well.  The desire to be in opposition to SOMETHING is fostered by the opposition from Saturn to Uranus, and if this planetary combination is transiting something in our own chart that urge to rebel against oneself can be quite complicated.

The opposition of Saturn to Uranus has been tightly aspecting Mars in President Obama's chart, with Saturn conjunct Mars and Uranus in opposition.  A transit of Saturn to Mars in our own chart is very like trying to drive with the brakes on.  However, Saturn has now moved off Obama's Mars which should begin to make things a little easier for him.  When a planet in the sky is opposite a planet in our chart (a transit of opposition) we often meet the transiting planet in our outer world.

Jupiter is retrograding back over Obama's Ascendant (the first hit was back in late March of this year) and transiting Saturn will form a harmonious sextile to Saturn in his natal chart, helping him to get things done and giving him the confidence to make it happen.  However, between October and December transiting Uranus will make the last opposition to Mars in Obama's chart and it's quite possible that we will see further amplification of the radical (Uranus) behavior surrounding everything he attempts to do (Mars).  This is already approaching the height of ridiculousness as conservatives complain about Obama's plan to speak to students to inspire them to work hard and stay in school.

The divisiveness and politicization caused by the opposition from Saturn to Uranus (remember the first exact hit occurred on the US Election Day) has penetrated every aspect of American society.  I suppose that this really began back in 2000 with the election of George W Bush, but the "angry left" as Rush Limbaugh called it was nothing compared to the rage and potential for violence that we are seeing in the angry right.

Meanwhile members of the Democratic party are engaging in bitter battles themselves over how much compromise is possible in the healthcare debate.  Democrats tend to be more Uranian in nature - they are progressive, embrace change and free thought.  Consequently, they are less likely to agree on anything.  Republicans on the other hand, being more conservative in nature and therefore more Saturnian, find it easier to follow a leader and adhere to the party line.

The shift from left to right and right to left has been evident in elections in other parts of the world as well.  Elections in Afghanistan and the attempt to bring in a new government (Uranus) with no ties to the old regime (Saturn) have resulted in widespread accusations of election fraud.  And in Japan, voters last week elected to overturn their current government (Saturn) in favor of a more liberal one (Uranus).

And finally, in Samoa the government has decreed that on September 7 its citizens will begin driving on the left inside of on the right as they have done before, resulting in a revolution among citizens who dislike this radical change (Uranus) and want things to remain the same (Saturn).

We are only in the third phase of this cycle - we will have two more over the next year.  There is no doubt that this is a time of evaluating what to take from the best as we move forward, and what to leave behind.

Mercury square Saturn, and Uranus prepares to retrograde

by Lynn Hayes

orion-nebula-hubble.jpg
Mercury is moving into position today to form a square to Saturn tomorrow.  Mercury, the Winged Messenger, presides over not only messages and communication but also the way we process our experiences through our conscious awareness.  In Gemini, its own sign, it is particularly facile and communication typically flows without interruption.

Saturn will put the brakes on that easy flow for a few days.  Saturn, lord of restriction, karma and time, stops the presses while corrections are made.  Saturn demands that we apply focus and diligence to all of our communication projects.  This is not a time for easy promises; accountability is required for the next few days until Mercury has moved out of range of the square.

Meanwhile Uranus has slowed down to a standstill in preparation for its change of direction on July 2nd, and between now and then we will begin to see the force of change dominate the news to a greater extent than before.  Watch for destabilization of the financial markets and political structures in general.  Uranus is retrograding back for its last passage through Pisces before it moves into Aries next year, and in my view this demands a wakeup call.

Uranus is known as "The Awakener" and Pisces rules sleep, and while Uranus has been in Pisces (since 2003) the disruption (Uranus) from the longing for the unconscious (Pisces) has been powerful.  Uranus will move into Aries in 2010 and there will be no more opportunity for sleep.  This then is a good time to begin to prepare for Uranus entering Aries by completing the awakening process within our own lives.  Where are we stuck in subconscious reactions to situations?  Where do we limit ourselves by taking the easy road?  Uranus always asks the question:  Where in our lives can we be more authentic?  While Uranus is retrograde we will have a deeply personal opportunity to discover the answers to these questions.

Surprising discoveries about Uranus

In astrology, Uranus symbolizes radical change and eccentric behavior, it is the revolutionary of the zodiac. Astronomers have long known that Uranus possesses unusual features such as the fact that it is tipped nearly on its side relative to the sun with its south pole pointing towards the Sun. This gives it the strange orbit pattern of rolling about as it travels around the sun. New discoveries by scientists at the SETI institute demonstrate that the orbits of Uranus' inner moons and ring structures have dramatically changed over the past decade. The rings appear to be constantly replenished by fresh material (just as Uranus serves in the birthchart to constantly slough off old tired habits and patterns to replenish them with a new way of looking at our lives), and the orbits that the moons make relative to each other has also changed dramatically.

This erratic and unusual behavior typifies the way Uranus operates in the birthchart of an individual and as it travels through the solar system and affects us by transit. Uranus rules revolution, it defies the status quo and seeks to remove from our lives anything that is tired and oppressive or which no longer serves us. Uranus has a tendency to coax out of us our secret longings to be our own completely unique individual. If we resist these impulses for too long, we may experience sudden urges to completely change our life, to walk our own path and break free of any restrictions that hold us back.

Unlike the rings of Saturn which are more permanently defined signifying the structures that Saturn creates, the rings of the Uranian moons appear to be in constant flux. Astrologically, Uranus seeks to create an environment within us where there is adequate space and freedom to adapt and change as our evolution requires, and once again I am amazed at the synchronicity between the astronomical nature of the planets and their symbolism in our lives.
