Fun Friday: Lady Gaga Makes Like Madonna, But Is MTV ‘Blasphemy’ Still News?

posted by Nicole Neroulias

Lady Gaga’s new music video for “Alejandro,” a catchy tune that strikes me as the lovechild of Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita” and Ace of Base’s “Don’t Turn Around,” has made headlines for its ”blasphemous” images, including the singer dressed as a latex-clad nun and swallowing a rosary, cavorting with nearly-nude gay men sporting monk-like hairdos, that sort of thing.

(If you’re in a hurry, just check out MTV’s compilation of the video’s “20 Most Shocking Scenes,” unless you’re at work or easily shocked.)

Eh. It’s no “Like a Prayer“ controversy, as this On Faith column explains, especially given that Gaga aims to be more than just Madonna 2.0. (Should that be a higher upgrade by this point? Madonna Vista?) Aside from the obvious denunciation by the Catholic League and some random criticism from not-uncontroversial entertainer Katy Perry, it’s not much of a scandal — presumably, Catholics have more to worry about these days than music videos. Plus, the video for “Alejandro,” which the Catholic-raised singer has explained represents “a celebration and an admiration of gay love,” seem to have nothing to do with the song’s lyrics… right? It’s just Gaga’s usual effort to be provocative, while doubling as a love letter to her gay fans. It’s hard to get worked up over someone that seems to be trying too hard.

Still, it makes for the most entertaining religion news of the week, and it does tie in with June as Gay and Lesbian Pride Month. Check out GetReligion’s recap of the media coverage, including some insight compiled from Larry King’s interview and other sources on Lady Gaga’s faith and career choices.

Fun Friday: Atheist Temple Planned for UK's Nonbelievers
Author Alain de Botton has announced plans to build an Atheist temple in the United Kingdom, presumably so nonbelievers have a place to gather and share their philosophies. Um... isn't that what Starbucks is for? Also, I can't wait to see how the architect will handle this kind of project. May

Alaska Airlines, now the country's seventh-largest airline, has announced it will stop offering prayer cards with its in-flight meals. (It's just raining religion news in the great unchurched Pacific Northwest lately.) I've flown Alaska several times since moving to Seattle, but I confess that I'

Washington's Gay Marriage Debate: Clergy vs. Clergy
I reported for Reuters at the Washington state Capitol yesterday, covering the public hearings on a gay marriage bill -- and in between, the breaking news that the state Senate now has enough votes to pass the bill. Shock is in the eyes of the beholder. I’m retired. My response to this is: Of one doesn’t like it…don’t watch it. Simple. Don’t support Lady Gaga by buying her music etc.
We have more to worry about than what someone does on a video. Oil spills, 2 wars etc.

Just undiluted trash from a bottom-feeder for the trash and (unfortunately ) younger trashy components of her generation.

Well, color me oblivious, but I don’t see anything especially shocking here. I never saw this “Lady Gaga” before. The worst I can say about the video is that it runs a minute or so too long, with repetitious material toward the end.

blasphemy is cursing god, sacrilege, which is the case here in lady gaga’s video, is the disdaining a religion or religious symbols and metaphors. it’s amazing how many people confuse the two, equating the all-too-human inventions of various religions with god and then basing the acceptance or rejection of those human symbols with the acceptance or rejection of god. this often happens the point of one losing their faith when a religion quite obviously fails, as in the case of the refusal to adequately deal with pedophilia in the catholic church. (speaking of being blasphemous and shocking!) it’s quite tragic really, especially when the fact that this very attitude and confusion is what led to the cruxifiction of jesus in the first place. by extension, many seem to conflate ‘god’ with urban western civilization, as many, including prominant thinkers such as sartre and camus ‘lost their faith’ during world war two when much of urban europe was destroyed and industrialism proved a collosal failure. this could be extended to current goings on in the gulf, but that is for a different post.
as for lady gaga’s alejandro video, it’s a catchy tune with some nice eye candy that does extremely well on the internet and will further promote her record sales. that’s exactly what it’s supposed to do, nothing more, nothing less. as a christian i fail to find what anything offensive about it.

Such shock value is long gone and is now actually tedious and boring. All this has been done before, better, with more impact. Everything that is ‘artistic’ or supposedly artistic, has its time and place. It is so sad that today’s generation is so bereft of creativity and trailblazing talent that retreads get regurgitated as acceptably ‘avant garde’. Aguilera morphs GaGa who morphs Madonna who morphed Monroe who morphed Harlow who morphed Mae West who morphed the drag queen Julian Eltinge who impersonated Lillian Russell. Adding the religious sacrilege element into the mix further grates sensibilities not because of the “blasphemy” so much as the tiresome repetitiveness of it all. As Katy Perry ( another tiresome twit ) twits about GaGa; “Using blasphemy as entertainment is as cheap as a comedian telling a fart joke.”

Lady MaGaga Jackson I’d say. A combo of Madonna style and Janet Jackson spaceship video imagery. Fairly pleasant to the ears at least!

Gaga’s “Alejandro” does sound like Ace of Base’s version of “Don’t Turn Around”. More power to her! I like hearing something old in a new song. I liked Ace of Base back in the day and I’ve heard they’ve been touring. Would be cool to see a live mash-up between them.
