I’m meeting Mata Amritanandamayi — aka Amma, “the hugging saint” — at the start of her new U.S. tour tomorrow. (It’s nice when national religion news comes to the Seattle area!)
Cathy Lynn Grossman at USA Today wrote about her during a 2006 tour stop, explaining that she was born to a traditional Hindu family in Kerala, but now embraces crowds of devotees from Christianity, Buddhism, Judaism and other faiths, all over the world. (Here are some photos of her blessing people in India earlier this month.)
She’s also active in fundraising and providing interfaith counseling for natural disaster relief, which — given the recent tornado in Joplin, Mo., the this year’s catastrophes in Japan, and the other calamities I’ve covered from a faith-related perspective here — is probably what I’ll focus on during our interview.

I have seen her and have been walked up. I hope you find her as amazing as I do. I have friends who live on her Ashram and I know others who are devoted to her.

Holy cow (no pun intended) – if nnmns and Robert C are on the same page, Amma must be amazing. I wish I had more time to prepare!

What a marvellous woman, she must be. With all her charity work, one couldn’t possible ask for a more charitable, and I’m sure lovely, person! All the best to her, and may God bless her.

i would like to know where i could know when Amma, the hugging saint, will again tour north america,and her schedule of where she will appear. is there an organization which sponsors her and to whom i can
inquire?
