For longtime religion reporters, it’s a challenge to come up with fresh ideas for the same holidays each year, especially for smaller groups like Judaism (depending on where you live). In a pinch, there are a few go-to angles that can give these stories a twist: “food,” “interfaith,” “gay,” “converts,” “technology,” “military,” etc. – but even those can get repetitive if you’re not careful!
Here are some of the more interesting stories I’ve seen for Rosh Hashana, Yom Kippur & Sukkot this year:
- -In Iceland, tiny Jewish community celebrates new beginnings (JTA)
- -Koufax-esque dilemmas on Yom Kippur Eve (JTA)
- -Holiday Near, Time Again to Track Down Perfect Fronds (NYT)
- -Yom Kippur Prayers for Corporate Atonement at Occupy Wall St. (Religion Dispatches)
- -Yom Kippur Helps Muslim Woman Rediscover Her Jewish Roots (Huffington Post)
And for a bit more fun, check out The Colbert Report’s annual “Atone-Phone” hotline - 1-888-OOPS-JEW – for Jews who wish to apologize for having wronged Stephen Colbert this year.
