Beyond Blue

The Real Self

Wednesday March 7, 2007

Abandoning your self-esteem in an act of freedom--letting go of the false ego to find the true self--is what an Indian holy man and a pioneer in the dialogue between Christianity and eastern religions named Swami Abhishiktananda (Can you imagine making a dinner reservation under that name?) describes in his writing:

The Spirit blows where he will
he calls from within and from without

For the wise man
who has discovered his true Self
there is no longer forest or town
clothes or nakedness
doing
or not-doing

He has the freedom of the Spirit
and through him
the Spirit works as he will
in this world
using equally
his silence and his speech
his solitude
and his presence in society

Having passed beyond
his own self
his own life
his own being and doing
he finds bliss and peace
in the Self alone
the only real Self

Great poem. I agree. Freeing oneself of ego attachments allows us to realize the connectedness of all things. It inspires a sense of kinship and well being. One no longer is concerned with the style of clothes, shoes, house, car or worldly accomplishments. One operates on a completely Spiritual level and is able to see that the ego is a construct based on the superficial.
