Insights on Prayer and Depression

posted by Beyond Blue | 10:30am Monday October 22, 2007

Check out the message board of my post “Depression and Prayer” (by clicking here) to read some interesting insights from Beyond Blue readers about this topic. I wanted to post them all here, but I don’t have room! Besides, it’s more fun to read them in context.

Love Deeply ...
Valentine's Day is a good time to remember all the ways we can be loving, not just to the guy/gal sitting across from you at the kitchen table, but also your boss, your mother, your boss's mother, and her mother. One of my very favorite reflections from Henri Nouwen is "Love Deeply," found in hi

Therapy Thursday: Sweat
I have decided to dedicate a post on Thursday to therapy, and offer you the many tips I have learned on the couch. They will be a good reminder for me, as well, of something small I can concentrate on. Many of them are published in my book, "The Pocket Therapist: An Emotional Survival Kit." Work

Scrupulosity: What It Is and Why It's Dangerous
If you sprinkle a hefty dose of Catholic (or Jewish) guilt unto a fragile biochemistry headed toward a severe mood disorder, you usually arrive at some kind of a religious nut. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! For I am one. I have said many places that growing up Catholic, for me, was

The Treasures of Darkness
We often equate darkness with sorrow, misery, get-me-the-hell-out-of-here reaction. At least I do. That’s why I keep a mammoth Happy Lite on my smallish cubicle at work. But darkness can also be a treasure. Say what? J. R. Miller writes this in “From Streams in the Desert” by L. B. C

On Groundhog Day: 12 Winter Depression Busters
Last year on this day, I got fired. That was a real pleasant Groundhog Day. I was so confused by what had happened that I drove around the D.C. beltway twice. I missed my exit, and realized that halfway around the second time. I just thought on this day, you could probably use some winter depres

I have no Faith anymore … Faith is the belief in something unproven … Father/God has proved to me, beyond a shadow of a doubt that God exists. Not only exists, but also is part of every thread in this Tapestry of Life … The only part that I don’t get, is why everybody doesn’t know that yet … “Come to Me, oh man/woman (or human) and be saved” says the Lord “For I AM GOD”

I’d love to hear your scientific proof, Wisdum …
(Which might be why everyone doesn’t share your faith — I mean sense of proof.)

I’d love to hear your scientific proof, Wisdum …
** There is no scientific proof, it has already been proven that the existence of God can neither be proved or disproved. Faith is the belief in something unproven, science is the study of physical evidence or facts. Communication directly is a very personal thing, that can only be proven between you and whatever spirit you are communicating with. In the world of psychotherapy it’s called bi-polar. It’s a funny thing, all my Life they told me “Believe in God, worship God, pray to God, take all your troubles to God, let God be your best friend, talk with God” … But the moment God talks back to you, you are crazy, and they will lock you up! (go figure !) God talks to everybody, all the Time. Most people do not either listen, discount it, or dismiss it. (and if they would lock you up for such foolishness, it is completely understandable) If there is really a God, don’t you think we should ALL have a personal relationship with such a being ? The person that had me committed was a priest, and I understand his position “Hey ! God isn’t talking to me, I’m a priest. Why would God be talking to you ?” … My response “Perhaps you just don’t listen !”
The big difference with me , and all the rest of the bi-polars is that I have hard copy, documented and copyrighted, along with witnesses. Either I am completely out of my mind, a liar, or I am telling the truth. The song “Walk With Me” was literally dictated to me by who I like to think is the Holy Spirit ( the music was written previously by a priest). Can I prove it ? Not to anybody but myself, and as far as I’m concerned that’s all I need, and I couldn’t care less as to what anybody else thinks ! A year after that song was given to me, I was asked to write a passion play, by my church. (Note, I never wrote anything serious in my Life, and only did scenery for theater) That whole sequence of events led to the play, and a year later, 15 songs were written for it, in three days, the same Way …nobody can do that without some other higher power involved ! We have been doing that play for the last 14 years, and are in the process of putting it on the road. Do I get any special treatment because of all of this, absolutely not. In fact it is my experience that anytime you try to do anything for God, your Life gets incredibly worse ! If you don’t believe me, ask any minister of the Lord ! By the Way, I have succeeded in posting that song here at Beliefnet Community, along with some pictures from the play. Search -Wisdum

** You’re absolutely right Larry ! … It’s only proof for Wisdum … and as for Larry, well all the Larry’s of the world have to find their own proof, within their own hearts.

If you don’t mind me asking you; What do you do for a living?
** I don’t mind at all ! I have been for most of my Life a wood worker. In 2005, I became dis-abled (I call it God slamming on the brakes of my work-a-holism) and am now on SSI. I am now re-tired, looking to re-group my Life, so I can afford to Live. I now call myself a “Would Worker” My Life with A.Frenda Meine (who I like to think/hope is the Holy Spirit) seriously started in 1988 at a Christian concert called Creation Music Festival ( creationfest.com ) It was a Woodstock type music fest, without the drugs and alcohol. I was at the original Woodstock, and wanted my kids to experience the same thing. I don’t know about my kids, but it changed my Life forever, especially a guy named Tony Campolo, who spoke there (and is also here at beliefnet, and tonycampolo.com) I still have the tape from that period, and have made and given out many CDs from it… I have a thought for the day thing, I have been doing for 15 years, called A Road Called Love, where I am known as “The Fool On The Hill” (the one that the Beatles wrote about, a long time ago) I am now “The Toothless Old Fool On The Hill” . . . and soon to be “The Bald, Toothless, Old Fool On The Hill”. And I just put up a page on Beliefnet Community (search Wisdum) … I guess all I have to say after that is …
