World Mental Health Day 2007

posted by Beyond Blue | 10:30am Wednesday October 10, 2007

I just discovered a great new blog for those of us with creative brain wiring: “Let’s Get Happy” written by Deborah Robinson. I learned of it while visiting Jane Chin’s wonderful site, Mental Health Source Page.
Deborah writes about World Mental Health Day, which is when?
April Fools Day?
All Saints Day?
Halloween?
Your birthday?
Nope.
Today!
October 10 is World Mental Health Day.
What does this mean? You get to go about your day exactly as you did yesterday: get up and pray, take your meds, go for a walk or a run outside, try to stretch that damn happy cap over your head, go to therapy, call a friend, log onto Beyond Blue (five times please), tell a joke, eat a meal (preferably with someone), and go to bed at the same time you did yesterday (good sleep hygiene).
Check out what Deborah has to write about World Mental Health Day by clicking here.

In the spirit of Valentine's Day, I thought I’d feature an interview with a very cool licensed psychologist and neuropsychologist that I was lucky enough to meet in person at a book signing back in September. Marsha Lucas, Ph.D., has been practicing psychotherapy and studying the brain-behavior re

Love Deeply ...
Valentine's Day is a good time to remember all the ways we can be loving, not just to the guy/gal sitting across from you at the kitchen table, but also your boss, your mother, your boss's mother, and her mother. One of my very favorite reflections from Henri Nouwen is "Love Deeply," found in hi

Therapy Thursday: Sweat
I have decided to dedicate a post on Thursday to therapy, and offer you the many tips I have learned on the couch. They will be a good reminder for me, as well, of something small I can concentrate on. Many of them are published in my book, "The Pocket Therapist: An Emotional Survival Kit." Work

Scrupulosity: What It Is and Why It's Dangerous
If you sprinkle a hefty dose of Catholic (or Jewish) guilt unto a fragile biochemistry headed toward a severe mood disorder, you usually arrive at some kind of a religious nut. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! For I am one. I have said many places that growing up Catholic, for me, was

The Treasures of Darkness
We often equate darkness with sorrow, misery, get-me-the-hell-out-of-here reaction. At least I do. That’s why I keep a mammoth Happy Lite on my smallish cubicle at work. But darkness can also be a treasure. Say what? J. R. Miller writes this in “From Streams in the Desert” by L. B. C

You know me, Therese, if I didn’t know the date already, I would have said April Fool’s Day. (Sigh.)

How sad that our society has so many individuals who have emotional/mental/spiritual illnesses that we need a special day to deicate to health of all the above! Unfortunately, though, that’s the case. and since we’ve beed discussing ‘whining lately, I have a complaint(BIG SURPRISE, RIGHT?) how come other special days (Bosses’ Day, for example) have gift-giving attached but OUR day doesn’t? in fact, i can’t recall ever even receiving a greeting card to commemorate this special day. (Hallmatk, you’re missing the boat here!) Call me materialistic or greedy (You wouldn’t be the first) but it seems to me that reaching out to someone who is struggling to find mental/spiritual/emotional health would be even more appropriate on THIS day than it is the other 3641/2 days of the year! So, my cyberfriends, let me be the first (the last/ the ONLY?) to wish each of you a (relatively)safe, contented, even-keeled twenty-four hours with the “dog securely locked away in a kennel and the abyss spanned by an easy-to-cross footbridge! If I could, I’d send you each a dozen roses (or at least one anyway!) And, Therese, YOU deserve not only the roses but a five pound box of Godivas to go with it for all you do to promote our collective and individual well being. HAPPY MENTAL HEALTH DAY, EVERYBODY(rO should it be MERRY Mental Health Day?) In honor of the occasion, perhaps I’ll email hallmark to point out the error of their ways 7 the thousands of dollars they AREN’T raking in due to this oversight. Or as wisum would say….or not!)

For those of us who have experienced the devastating effects of depression and bipolar disorder, every day that we enjoy a semblance of “normalcy” and contentment is worthy of celebration.
I know I am :-)
