Fr. Bede Jarrett, O.P. on New Vision

posted by Beyond Blue | 10:45am Monday November 5, 2007

The following mediation by Fr. Bede Jarett was the reflection for Sunday’s reading in my devotional, “Magnificat.” It’s excerpted from the book “He Dwells in Your Soul, Encountering the Living God Within You.”

The vision has come; it cannot simply open my eyes to new things in life without thereby altering that very life itself. Not only shall I find that what seemed to me before to be evil now appears to me to be a blessing; but on that very account, what before I tried to avoid, or, having got, tried to be rid of, I shall now accept, perhaps even seek. Similarly, whereas when I was weak, now I am strong’ and increase of strength means new activities, new energy put into the old work and finding its way into works altogether new. … Once upon a time I thought happiness meant comfort; now I see that it means something quite different. My view of happiness has changed. I am therefore obliged to change also my idea as to the means and conditions whereby, and in which, happiness can be found.

How Do You Heal Loneliness?
If I had to name the most common complaint I hear among depressives, it is that they are lonely. She wants so badly to connect with another woman--as the anchors in her li

Rewire Your Brain For Love: An Interview with Marsha Lucas, Ph.D.
In the spirit of Valentine's Day, I thought I’d feature an interview with a very cool licensed psychologist and neuropsychologist that I was lucky enough to meet in person at a book signing back in September. Marsha Lucas, Ph.D., has been practicing psychotherapy and studying the brain-behavior re

Love Deeply ...
Valentine's Day is a good time to remember all the ways we can be loving, not just to the guy/gal sitting across from you at the kitchen table, but also your boss, your mother, your boss's mother, and her mother. One of my very favorite reflections from Henri Nouwen is "Love Deeply," found in hi

I have decided to dedicate a post on Thursday to therapy, and offer you the many tips I have learned on the couch. They will be a good reminder for me, as well, of something small I can concentrate on. Many of them are published in my book, "The Pocket Therapist: An Emotional Survival Kit." Work

Scrupulosity: What It Is and Why It's Dangerous
If you sprinkle a hefty dose of Catholic (or Jewish) guilt unto a fragile biochemistry headed toward a severe mood disorder, you usually arrive at some kind of a religious nut. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! For I am one. I have said many places that growing up Catholic, for me, was

Bede Jarrett put into words what has been my experience as I look back over many years of turmoil and loss. What I perceived as a tragedy at the time, was instead a path opening to joy. The key, as in Therese’s prayer to God, is perspective. When we say someone needs a change of attitude, perhaps the better word choice is perspective. Out in the rural area in which I live, you will see these paths across the fields made by cows going to pasture. They walk the same walk two or three times a day without veering outside the well-trod path. It is so easy for us be cows.
One small change, however, begets another, and another, and…..

Dylan Thomas is one of my patron saints (LOL), so this is a tough one for me to swallow.
A blessing in the sense it brought me to a new sense of consciousness that may have prevented a wasted and sinful life? Quite possibly.
Happiness and joy? THAT, I’m going to have to mull over … **hard** …
