Holiday Survival Thought #6

Unfortunately, Christians don't believe in reincarnation. Jesus is our only hope for getting it right. He's a big deal. That's why Catholic schools are closed for three weeks in December--in celebration of Christmas and to give miserable parents a reason to talk to God ... a lot.

More ROFLMAO!!!!!

On the other hand, in New Jersey, most public schools close for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (in some districts because many students are Jewish, in others because many teachers are). Now, because so many Muslim and Hindu immigrants have settled in the Garden State -- particularly in central New Jersey -- they are lobbying to have their biggest holidays off, too (e.g., Diwali; the Eid festivals beginning and ending Ramadan).

Let's not even get into the fact that public schools close two days in November for -- the teachers' union's annual convention in Atlantic City. (No lie -- they are the most powerful single political force in N.J.)

Pretty soon public school kids in our state will have to go to school the week between Christmas and New Year's -- and still be in school until July.

** I'm a New Jersey resident also (desperately trying to get out, into the "Keystone State/Pa" where the cost of living is one third of NJ, all the Way around! Let's face it, if we truly have "separation of church and stat", there should be no religious holydays off, except if you choose to take off (and not at taxpayer expense!) BTW there is no such thing as "Separation of Church and State" in the Constitution. That was a suggestion by Thomas Jefferson in a letter, and was never put in, it is only tradition. All of this rulling over this is un-Constitutional and is a corruption of the First Amendment to the Bill of Rights. This is all happening due to ignor-ance ... "You can never go wrong, underestimating the ignorance of the American Public!" (PT Barnum)According to the Way that amendment was written, "Establishment of Religion is Prohibited"

Larry, you forgot to mention things like President's Day and Martib Luther King's birthday! Although I heartily support the latter being a national holiday, it has always seemed to me that the manand his cause would be better served by using that day to TEACH about the man and what he stood forrather than canceling classes (And that comes straight from the mouth of an ex(sigh) public schoolteacher! It's appalling how little today's children know about who he was and the cause he committed his life to. If you don't believe me, ask a group of kids...you'll get answers ranging from "He was a president to "He was the first black astronaut!" (actual examples from my experiences. IMHO it's useless to have a day to honor the man if people don't know why he deserves to be recognized Another heretic thought: I think school hould remain open EVERY day of the school year. If individualschoose to stay home for religious reasons, their absence should be excused and any work missed should be allowed to be made up.
Wisdum: Thank you for the social studies lesson; I checked and you're absolutely correct! Given the reasons that the first settlers chose to come here it makes more sense the way you explain it than it does to use the terminology"Separation of church and state'"

Therese,

Your last line says it all - That's why Catholic schools are closed for three weeks in December--in celebration of Christmas and to give miserable parents a reason to talk to God ... a lot.

And to think I don't even have kids. I just remember the hell I gave my parents during X-mas break.

Thanks for the smile.

Nancy
