The 8 Best Spiritual Sound Bites of Graduation Advice
I can't remember all the speeches at my commencement ceremony. But I do remember looking up on the stage to see my best friend, the valedictorian of our class, sitting there among all the luminaries, and wondering how in the world she did that when English was her second language. It still blows me

Struggle With, Not Victory Over
It’s tempting for anyone who writes about depression and anxiety to preach from hindsight, after he has “recovered” from his mood disorder: “This is what I did to free myself from addiction” … “Here are five steps to instant weight loss” … “These are eight techniques to cure anxi

Ring the Bells That Still Can Ring
Last year this time I delivered the Commencement address to my alma mater, Saint Mary's College in Notre Dame, Indiana. Since it is graduation season, I thought I'd repost it. Thank you, President Mooney. And thank you to all the professors and staff of Saint Mary’s, especially those who have c

Label Me, Please
For a long while I was afraid to write things such as "I am mentally ill" or "I am bipolar." I was afraid of labels. By calling myself a manic-depressive would I trap my psyche in "sick" mode? By accepting my diagnosis of bipolar disorder, would I prevent healing? By writing the words "I am menta

In Sickness and In Health
"On Wednesday, I will leave my husband of twelve years. He is a depressive. He uses prescribed medication and has available to him a phalanx of good therapists. But he also self-medicates with alcohol. He disdains therapy. He refuses to confront his disease."She communicated this partly as a respons

Amen, T! I have so much I want to express on this awesome video you did. The content is tremendous and true. Optimism and gratitude may help with keeping abreast of the blessings in my life, it won’t cure the debilitating illnesses that I am now going to address over in Norwalk, CT again today. If that were the case, the illness would be long gone. Integrity and being true to oneself; those concepts were foreign to me in a variety of ways years ago. Not so much anymore and as a Mom, that one of the gifts I hoped I’ve passed on to my Sons.

The Doxieman blog sees all and knows all.
Wonderful video, Therese, but I’m ahead of you … (HTTP://)

If you can’t open the link, the opening and closing paragraphs of “Vanessa, Jamie Lynn, and Miley”:
My 7-year-old niece and my chaperone sister were on a school trip recently to a museum. On the bus to and from the museum, her classmates were singing songs from Miley Cyrus’ “Hannah Montana” TV show and Vanessa Hudgens’ “High School Musical” movies (both produced by Disney) at the top of their lungs.
“Mommy,” my niece said, hugging her mom close, both plaintively and defiantly, “I don’t know any of these songs.”
You’re in good company, sweetie. Your uncle doesn’t know any of them either. …
The conceit of her [Miley Cyrus'] concert tour, called the “Best of Both Worlds” after one of Hannah’s/Miley’s hit songs (presumably not the Van Halen classic from their late ‘80s “Van Hagar” period), is that she appears in half of the show as glamorous Hannah, takes an intermission (where a boy band plays), and then is down-home Miley in the second half of the show.
Frankly, for all the sophistication of her role on TV and, frankly, the role in pop culture she has grown into, her “act” wouldn’t work if it wasn’t real – and if she didn’t truly keep a down-home side. (Thanks to – her dad? her own good nature?) Because her fans would pick up on it – instantly. That’s the nature of show biz these days.
(Meanwhile, Disney — of course riding the gravy train — is making a “Hannah Montana” feature film just as it is producing now of “High School Musical.”)
I agree with my sister that my niece is way too young for “High School Musical” (and good luck explaining why the boys are snickering over Vanessa Hudgens). But I hardly think it would be the end of the world if she became a Hannah Montana fan.

You could lighten half your load just by omitting the word perfect. The mistakes we make or have made are all forgiven. Perfection is a state of grace not something thats achieved. It already is! We were created in His likeness therefore, we allready are. Guilt is something we give to ourselves and its not a gift. The gift we should be opening is forgiveness. Throw all those rocks away, forget about being perfect, make your mistakes…learn from them! Move on to better and brighter things. Don’t carry that unneccary bag of rocks or save it….Dump it!
