Beyond Blue

Larry Parker: Dreams and Rain

Friday July 25, 2008

The other day I invited you to write your own "This I Believe" essay like the ones read over NPR. Beyond Blue reader Larry Parker/Doxieman122 (who is a candidate for the Member of the Month) blew me away with his. I...

I didn't realize you were going to include the political stuff along with the philosophical stuff, Therese.

But that's OK. As my dear Ana and I were just discussing last night, it's always tough to separate (as feminists might say) the personal from the political.

At least you know where I stand :-)

Thanks again, Larry

wow! Where to begin? Mesmerizing! And yes, you were never meant NOT to write, Larry! I often pass up blogs that look like this because of their sheer length. Daunting! However, surprise, surpise, I read the whole entire thing. Captivating! (And yes, I'm using a lot of exclamation points)

I absolutely love the quote from American Beauty. Although I watched the movie, it's been years and I was probably drunk when I watched it so I don't remember the quote. Profound, I think--the quote, not the fact that I was probably drunk when I watched it.

Although not diagnosed as bipolar, I'm cracking up about your U2 Vertigo song comment. I really love that whole CD and yeah, I think if I listened to it repeatedly for a long period of time, I would literally slit my wrists. (probably not a funny comment since I am a "cutter.")

I agree--BB is the best blog on depression--and that's without even looking for others. I just "happened" on this one--or you could call it God's providence! I believe God puts special people in our lives for a purpose. I was so surprised to actually find a site immediately that not only addressed depression but was coming from someone with a Christian perspective. And to top things off--Therese isn't boring or conventional, etc. She speaks my language--as do you; however, I must admit that although educated, some stuff you wrote is "over my head." Therese Rocks!

And Forrest Gump--I agree, major wisdom there. I especially loved the comment made when throwing rocks at his girlfriend's old childhood house. He said something like "Sometimes there just aren't enough rocks." I agree!

I agree that nothing is impossible but I also believe that with GOD, ALL THINGS ARE POSSIBLE. Bless you, Larry. You are gifted. (wouldn't you love a diagnosis of "gifted" as opposed to bipolar? because crap, gifted and unique and creative is much less socially alienating- ha!)

Valerie:

You centered in on one of the things I find most moving in Gump, for very personal reasons.

I dated a woman from South Carolina for two years -- who, it turned out, had been abused. I want to cry when I think of the scene with Jenny throwing the rocks.

(And thanks for the many other compliments!)

Larry, quite a piece!! Thanks for the compliment on Colorado. I am assuming you have at least visited our fine state, or maybe lived here. We take our present circumstances for granted too often. I checked in on Amy Welborn's website last night (AmyWelborn.wordpress.com) and she and her family are vacationing at or around the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. She shows some pictures and it looks beautiful around there, too. Peg in Denver

PS Amy is a great writer, too.

Larry,
I, too am blown away! The raw honesty and emotion that this piece evoke are MASSIVE! yOU WERE INDEED born to write and I feel privileged to be privy to some of your musings.
I feel the same odious fears about our favorite senator and include the safety of him and his sweet family in my prayers daily. Not only does he face the same sixties-type prejudices as Martin, Robert and John, there are still many who insist on tying him into this decades strongest hate target simply due to his parrentage.( knowing Abraham's real plan for the emancipated slaves won't allow me to include him here.) Rain walks are among my favorite passtimes; or WERE when I could still take walks; it's not good for my power chair to get wet)My last apartment opened onto a three story atrium that was the PERFECT place to watch thunderstorms coming in across Lake Michigan; it's one of the features I most miss. Pyrotechnics are NOTHING compared to G-d's firewoe=rks IMHO. Your capcity for utilizing the written word continues to amaze me, and I watch your new relationship growing with joy i my heart for BOTH of you!

Dear Larry,

Your essay jumped out at me at a "coincidental" moment. I have never been on this site before and yours is the second page I came to. So many subjects you touch upon have been weighing on my mind more than usual lately. I can't thank you enough for being opinionated and sharing it. Also, thank you for reminding me of that quote in American Beauty. Funny how comforting it is to know that other people see/feel the world in a similar way.

Thanks again,
S

Larry, I have been reading your comments etc. on Beyond Blue for over a year now. You are a writer. You speak truth in ways that are simple and yet profound. The one thing I believe is that GOD is.
