Video: Emotional Eating with Janice Taylor, Our Lady of Weight Loss

posted by Beyond Blue | 10:00am Thursday July 24, 2008

I admit upfront that I was a little jealous of Janice when she started her “Our Lady of Weight Loss” blog because I had to share my editor, Holly, with her … and, well, I felt like the older sister who didn’t want to share mommy with anyone … even if she was cute and smart and liked Gerber carrots. But I got over it soon enough when I met Janice in person at the Beliefnet offices and interviewed her. It turns out we have much in common, and I think her insight on emotional eating is of real value to us at Beyond Blue.

In the spirit of Valentine's Day, I thought I’d feature an interview with a very cool licensed psychologist and neuropsychologist that I was lucky enough to meet in person at a book signing back in September. Marsha Lucas, Ph.D., has been practicing psychotherapy and studying the brain-behavior re

Love Deeply ...
Valentine's Day is a good time to remember all the ways we can be loving, not just to the guy/gal sitting across from you at the kitchen table, but also your boss, your mother, your boss's mother, and her mother. One of my very favorite reflections from Henri Nouwen is "Love Deeply," found in hi

Therapy Thursday: Sweat
I have decided to dedicate a post on Thursday to therapy, and offer you the many tips I have learned on the couch. They will be a good reminder for me, as well, of something small I can concentrate on. Many of them are published in my book, "The Pocket Therapist: An Emotional Survival Kit." Work

Scrupulosity: What It Is and Why It's Dangerous
If you sprinkle a hefty dose of Catholic (or Jewish) guilt unto a fragile biochemistry headed toward a severe mood disorder, you usually arrive at some kind of a religious nut. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! For I am one. I have said many places that growing up Catholic, for me, was

The Treasures of Darkness
We often equate darkness with sorrow, misery, get-me-the-hell-out-of-here reaction. At least I do. That’s why I keep a mammoth Happy Lite on my smallish cubicle at work. But darkness can also be a treasure. Say what? J. R. Miller writes this in “From Streams in the Desert” by L. B. C

Dearest OLDER Sister … That’s what you said, right? You are the OLDER sister. If I were to have a sister, I would want her to be the OLDER one. So thanks for that!
And platterfuls of gratitude to you for interviewing me, sharing not only Holly, but your Beliefnet page with me! You created one kick tush video! Next time, I’m interviewing you!
See you soon, I hope! Faux Family is the BEST!
xoxo, Janice a.k.a. Our Lady of Weight Loss

Thank you, Therese and Janice. Such powerful thoughts — enjoying your poignancy and “all is forgiven.” Obesity and overeating have been my main depression-related struggles in life.

Re: Cameron2761, Hell yeah! If you’re a failure pal move over and share the spotlight will ya? Food is NOT my friend, but a reasonable facsimile. The good news? There’s always tommorrow night. As the saying goes…it does’nt matter how many times you fall…only how many times you get back up. You have to give yourself permission to screw up now and then. You’re hungry for something better than food. Only you hold the key. Self awareness is step one. Hang in there!

The bottom line for me is that food, especially sweets have always made me “feel” better. I am now 55 and once again fat. This time I am going to conciously make better choices healthwise and do more physical anything every day. And if I have to do it one minute at a time, I will!!!! I have absolutely ruined my bodys’ appearance. Another consequence of whatever has plagued me all these years. Shoot! Here’s to everyone who knows what I’m talking about…
