Video: Making Jewelry, Making Peace

posted by Beyond Blue | 10:00am Friday July 18, 2008

Awhile back I did an interview with one my mental health heroes, Fr. Joseph Girzone, who talked about carving sculptures from bars of soap to escape his depression. Now I interview another mental health hero, Priscilla Warner (who runs The Faith Club, here at Beliefnet’s Community and who is a candidate for Beliefnet’s Member of the Month contest) on a creative way she has transformed some of her anxiety and grief into art: by making jewelry. Pretty cool, huh?

Watch this video and you’ll see her beautiful beading.

Therapy Thursday: Sweat
I have decided to dedicate a post on Thursday to therapy, and offer you the many tips I have learned on the couch. They will be a good reminder for me, as well, of something small I can concentrate on. Many of them are published in my book, "The Pocket Therapist: An Emotional Survival Kit." Work

Scrupulosity: What It Is and Why It's Dangerous
If you sprinkle a hefty dose of Catholic (or Jewish) guilt unto a fragile biochemistry headed toward a severe mood disorder, you usually arrive at some kind of a religious nut. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! For I am one. I have said many places that growing up Catholic, for me, was

The Treasures of Darkness
We often equate darkness with sorrow, misery, get-me-the-hell-out-of-here reaction. At least I do. That’s why I keep a mammoth Happy Lite on my smallish cubicle at work. But darkness can also be a treasure. Say what? J. R. Miller writes this in “From Streams in the Desert” by L. B. C

On Groundhog Day: 12 Winter Depression Busters
Last year on this day, I got fired. That was a real pleasant Groundhog Day. I was so confused by what had happened that I drove around the D.C. beltway twice. I missed my exit, and realized that halfway around the second time. I just thought on this day, you could probably use some winter depres

6 Ways to Stay Resilient in Stress
Writer Jennifer Yane once said, “I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days will attack me at once.” Admittedly, I spend too many days myself running from “the attacks of the calendars.” I am thinking that if I didn’t have so much stress in my life, I MIGHT be able to grab

Thanks Therese~Great video. I would love to know how to contact the woman making the jewelry to purchase and also find out where in NYC those great little shops are. Does she sell online?

And, the last clip of her wearing 15 necklaces was “friendship by the pound”? : )

Glad you caught that, Kate.
Yes, that last shot is definitely “friendship by the pound!”
I got a bit carried away by beading, as many people do. It really turned into a healthy addiction! Altho my work space got to be, shall we say, a bit crowded and, um, unorganized….
And Maggie – The Faith Club took off, we traveled a great deal and I haven’t been selling jewelry too much, but you can always email me at my profile page here at Beliefnet- I do have lots of inventory! The shops I talked about in New York are mostly on West 37th Street or in the 20′s on Broadway. Also a couple on 6th Ave @ 40th Street – happy hunting!

Nice to “meet” you, Priscilla!
I’m with the other commenters — was that “beading” or “beating” (your poor neck) that you were talking about in the last segment? ;-P

You’ve made this clumsy-fingered jewelry lover want to give beading a try. I can fully appreciate the peace that creating something of beauty brings.
