Suicide and Eternal Damnation: Who Is Going to Hell?

Group BB rose.jpg Group Beyond Blue member SurvivorForce started a discussion thread called "Are we damned if we commit suicide?" at Group Beyond Blue on Beliefnet's Community. He wrote:

I have heard that some believe suicide is unforgivable, and that God will condemn a person if they commit suicide. Does God not know that we are human, with limits, with needs to escape, and our endurance is maxed? Is it really a sin, or is it a way of coping with an impossible world that has imperfect solutions to imperfect problems?
I have wondered that question so many times. My former therapist told me that, with her religious clients, she would often stroke a depressive's fear of hell and eternal damnation as a motivator for hanging in there. It was somewhat successful with me. I was afraid that if I took my life my soul would be trapped in a purgatory of sorts, saddled with the same issues I have now and unable to move on.

But I can't see how God would punish people like my godmother, my Aunt Mary Lou, who simply ran out of hope. I choose to believe that God embraces those persons who, in my opinion, died from their illnesses just as cancer victims died of theirs, that God would show them nothing but loving compassion since he knows how much they suffered, and that they merely wanted the pain to end.

The Catholic Church once condemned all those who took their lives to hell. But they have changed that. Paragraphs 2280 to 2283 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church say this:

Everyone is responsible for his life before God who has given it to him. It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life. We are obligated to accept life gratefully and preserve it for his honor and the salvation of our souls. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of.
Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life. It is gravely contrary to the just love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation, and other human societies to which we continue to have obligations. Suicide is contrary to love for the living God.
If suicide is committed with the intention of setting an example, especially to the young, it also takes on the gravity of scandal. Voluntary co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law.
Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide.
We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.

Group Beyond Blue: Letter to a Suicidal Person From a Survivor

Group BB rose.jpg

Group Beyond Blue member Rose S. posted a beautiful reflection on Group Beyond Blue called "Letter to a suicidal person from a survivor":

Dear friend,

I am writing this to you both as the survivor of an attempted suicide and as someone who lost a person they loved to suicide.

I have tried on more than one occasion to take my own life. The last time I almost succeeded in completing it, taking 20 Phenobarbital tablets prescribed for seizures downed with a fifth of Jack Daniels.

I felt I was worthless, that no one would ever care about me and that my then-toddler son would be better off without me. But by the grace of God and my son's father who performed CPR until paramedics showed up, I survived with no permanent damage.

So I got help, I signed a no-harm contract, and anytime I am so depressed I don't think life is worth living I look at that worn-out piece of paper and at the face of my now 20-year-old son and realize just how wrong I am. That in his eyes, there is a reason to live, in his face and the faces of his half-brother and his two stepbrothers that I love as if they were my own. I look in the mirror and tell myself that I am worthwhile. My children, though they are adults still need me and I AM loved.

I am telling you this because a young lady I knew, the girlfriend of my 20 year old, completed suicide at age 18. She was funny, smart and beautiful both inside and out. But beneath that exterior lied a troubled child who saw the only way to get rid of her pain was to take her own life. All too often, those we care about are hurting so badly that even we don't see and they choose death as a way of healing, without taking into consideration the effects of those they leave behind.

I am begging you as you read this, to seek help. Talk to a counselor, family member, close friend or minister. Suicide is so final, not only for the person who attempts or completes it, but for those who are left behind to grieve. Stop a minute and think hard before you do whatever it is you plan on doing. You are worthwhile, you are a good person, you are loved.

Sincerely,

A Survivor

Everyone feels afraid at some point -- whether it's a gnawing, anxious feeling or a paralyzing phobia. Any change, even positive changes like marriage or a promotion, can prompt feelings of fear. The Bible offers powerful alternatives to those voices, reminding readers repeatedly, "Do not be afraid." Click through this gallery to find Bible verses to help you overcome fears and anxieties in your life. (From the New International Version unless otherwise noted.)

Video: Why Yoga?

I think I've told you all before that I'm somewhat of a yoga moron. I totally get the concept of yoga, and I know I need to learn some of its basics. But I just get confused when instructors tell me to look out of my third eye. I look around and see what other people are doing--is the third eye on the backside or the front side? Why does no one else seem confused?

My friend Priscilla Warner knew about my difficulty with yoga, so when I came to New York to stay with her, she arranged a private yoga session with a wonderful instructor, Julie. Having trained in India, Julie is the real deal. Walking into her peaceful tent constructed in her backyard, I immediately began to feel my blood pressure drop. By the time she was done with the class, and was anointing my forehead with oil, I was won over.

So I decided to interview her on why she became a yoga instructor, and what it can do for folks who suffer from depression and anxiety. Here she is!

Yoga Can Relieve Anxiety and Depression

yoga, lotus.jpgAccording to The Johns Hopkins Winter 2008 Issue of Depression and Anxiety Bulletin:
Low levels of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) have been associated with depression and particularly anxiety, and antidepressants have been shown to increase GABA levels. Now, preliminary research suggests that the regular practice of yoga may be an effective, nonpharmacological way to raise GABA levels and potentially improve anxiety and depression symptoms.

Researchers recruited eight longtime yoga devotees who practiced twice a week for at least four months and 11 comparison participants. Both groups had a baseline brain scan done. Then the yoga participants performed a one-hour yoga session while the control group read books or magazines [or packed snacks for their kids so they wouldn't be yelled at] for the same time, and all participants were rescanned immediately after.

The yoga volunteers showed a 27 percent increase in GABA levels compared with baseline, but there was no change among the readers [or snack-packers].

Several previous trials have demonstrated that yoga can reduce anxiety and depression symptoms, but this is the first study to identify a possible mechanism for the effects.

The investigators conclude that yoga may serve as a useful adjunct to standard treatments recommended by your doctor. This research was published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine.
