Mental Illness Awareness Week: Where We Are, Where We Can Go

posted by Beyond Blue | 10:00am Friday October 10, 2008

I know that I usually feature “Friday’s Question” on Friday, but since this is Mental Illness Awareness Week, I’d like to post a few articles on some successes today–a victory in the House to require health plans to cover treatment for mental illness on the same terms and conditions as all other illnesses!–and where where have to go: an article by Beyond Blue reader Larry Parker on stigma, and a letter from Group Beyond Blue SoberToday revised from Bek Oberin on what we want to say to those living without depression and/or anxiety.

Rewire Your Brain For Love: An Interview with Marsha Lucas, Ph.D.
In the spirit of Valentine's Day, I thought I’d feature an interview with a very cool licensed psychologist and neuropsychologist that I was lucky enough to meet in person at a book signing back in September. Marsha Lucas, Ph.D., has been practicing psychotherapy and studying the brain-behavior re

Love Deeply ...
Valentine's Day is a good time to remember all the ways we can be loving, not just to the guy/gal sitting across from you at the kitchen table, but also your boss, your mother, your boss's mother, and her mother. One of my very favorite reflections from Henri Nouwen is "Love Deeply," found in hi

Therapy Thursday: Sweat
I have decided to dedicate a post on Thursday to therapy, and offer you the many tips I have learned on the couch. They will be a good reminder for me, as well, of something small I can concentrate on. Many of them are published in my book, "The Pocket Therapist: An Emotional Survival Kit." Work

Scrupulosity: What It Is and Why It's Dangerous
If you sprinkle a hefty dose of Catholic (or Jewish) guilt unto a fragile biochemistry headed toward a severe mood disorder, you usually arrive at some kind of a religious nut. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! For I am one. I have said many places that growing up Catholic, for me, was

The Treasures of Darkness
We often equate darkness with sorrow, misery, get-me-the-hell-out-of-here reaction. At least I do. That’s why I keep a mammoth Happy Lite on my smallish cubicle at work. But darkness can also be a treasure. Say what? J. R. Miller writes this in “From Streams in the Desert” by L. B. C

Thank you for all you do to raise awareness of mental illness and sources of assistance and information. Please continue to include resources and help for caregivers/loved ones of someone with a mental illness in your postings. A dear friend of mine just suffered a nervous breakdown due to the stress of caring for a teenage child with serious mental health issues, so please continue to raise awareness of the mental health of caregivers and ways to help them cope. Thanks for your excellent blog and all the help and hope you give through it.

Thank you for yesterdays comment regarding depression and ADD, I believe both of these can interfere with your attempts at getting that one-on-one personal relationship with God. I used to be envious when I’d here people speak of how the Lord spoke to them about something that was bothering them, and while in prayer, He spoke to them. Thankfully, I too know how to tune in to God speaking to you. Of course, I don’t mean out loud, but that quiet voice or thought that ony you can recognize as Him. I hope we all encourage people with mental health issues or issues such as ADD to turn to others and God to cope.

Thank you for all the articles you have on depression or bi-polar. I am bi-polar. I haven’t had a manic episode in about four years but I have been severely depressed. I just had ECT treatments and they worked. The doctor also changed my medication and I am doing so much better. Thank you for everything.
