Growing up with schizophrenic cat (as diagnosed by the vet … with hair loss symptoms), I’ve always been sensitive to the mood disorders of pets. I confess that I don’t really take them seriously. I guess I should. But, come on, there is something a little, I don’t know … comical?, about giving your pup Prozac.
Nonetheless, James of Finding Optimism has a great post called “My Dog Has a Mental Illness. That Makes Me the Companion Animal.” Go to “Finding Optimism” (by clicking here) to read such interesting facts as this one: Up to 17 percent of dogs in the US are suffering from separation anxiety.

Stumbled on this post after reading one of your others. You’ve sparked my interest because this is the first I’ve heard of a pet having a mental illness or at least it specifically called “mental illness”. I’m curious because my cat is on antidepressants to help him relax enough to potty! The vet thought it would be a temporary thing, but as soon as the meds stopped…so did his potty in the litter box. Amazing…because the cat is 9 yrs old no real changes to the household and one day he just started doing it. Thanks for giving me another reference source to check out!
