Pets Are Like Family
By Rev. Laurie Sue Brockway & Rev. Victor Fuhrman
Pets are as much a part of the family as human members. Whether a wedding or a memorial, a welcome for a new kitten, or a prayer for an animal that is ill, we've discovered that people find it very meaningful to bless their pets and to have access to the same kind of spiritual services available to humans. Here is a sampling of prayers for pet lovers and their animal companions, meant to uplift and heal.
Excerpted from "Pet Prayers and Blessings: Celebrations and Ceremonies to Share With The Animals You Love" (Sterling Books, September 2008), by Laurie Sue Brockway and Victor Fuhrman.

We got our toy poodle, Fifi, when our daughter was 8 years old. She and Fifi have grown up together, and Fifi thinks that the sun rises and sets on the kid.
Now, Fifi is starting to show signs of aging, with cataracts, deafness, and a bit of canine Alzheimer's in there, too. Dh, dd, and I are feeling sad to see our beloved companion's mortality becoming so evident. We hold her a little closer and longer, feed her a few more snacks, and fuss over her a lot more. Whoever coined the phrase "Love hurts" wasn't kidding.
