I used to be afraid to write. Because I knew I would write badly. I couldn't commit my words to the page because I was sure I would use the wrong ones not to mention incorrect grammar and punctuation....

Therese, can't believe you were ever criticized for your writing skills. We here at BB think you are close to perfect!!!

I really enjoyed reading your blog. This was the first time I had time to sit and read. I enjoyed your video immensely! I am going back thru the archives soon.

It doesn't hurt that you remind me of an actress I watch on television, the way you speak and look. I won't say which one in case you do not like her, but I enjoy watching her. I keep thinking she is going to get 'tough and kick ass' but then she doesn't. 'sigh'.

Thank you very much for this incredible blog!! You have no idea how helpful this has been. Thank you.

Therese...

I enjoy your blog so very much. You inspire intelligent reflection in your readers who face the same issues. Your blog has helped me to think about and navigate through some self deception. You have a wonderful way with words and I yearn to read your Monday blogs every week.

Mental Illness is not a failure but sometimes forces us to come to a deeper understanding and awareness of all that is "us".

Thanks for your insights and your encouragement.

It's hard to believe you've been criticized for your writing. I'm glad you aren't letting the negative comments infect your self-confidence. I think it must take a lot of courage and self-control to not read the negativity. Good for you!

Did you have a hard time being in a writing class or writing group? I've wondered what that's really like. Even if the feedback is positive, I fear I might find myself being swayed with whatever the latest piece of advice might be about my writing.

I'm looking forward to reading your book. Congratuiations!

I was thinking about this and what came to mind is a book by Anne Lamontt called Bird-by-Bird. Tons of great writing advice and in it is a quote about sh-tty first drafts. I was a little fuzzy on the details because it's been years since I read it. So I Googled it and found that this really awesome book that I thought I kind of had as a secret weapon is now required reading in most writing classes. Boo. BUT I did find the quote I wanted to share with you:

"I know some great writers, writers you love who write beautifully and have made a great deal of money, and not one of them sits down routinely feeling wildly enthusiastic and confident. Not one of them writes elegant first drafts. All right, one of them does, but we do not like her very much...Very few writers know what they're going until they've done it."

Thanks so much for the kind feedback! And yes, Mel, great quote! That book did help me to overcome some, SOME, of my insecurity!

CONGRATULATIONS, Therese, on the soon-to-be published story of your life!! I KNOW writing is a solitary profession, 'cos you can't make anything up! Keep up the good work. You're such a "kid," and have MANY years to add to your "life story." Your Beyond Blue readers are behind you all the way. You go, girl!!

Are you reading my mind? Did you write this to only me? I am so amazed at how close you hit to home. Thank you so much for your inspiring words!
