Questionnaire: What Is Your Prayer Profile?

posted by Beyond Blue | 9:01am Thursday July 23, 2009

Robert Wicks includes an interesting questionnaire toward the back of his book, “Prayerfulness: Awakening to the Fullness of Life.” It is designed to help you gain perspective on how open, resent, and prayerful you are in your daily life; it should give you an indication of what is pulling you into the past or what is preoccupying you with the future, rather than allowing you to be in the present. Dr. Wicks believes that the themes that surface from the questionnaire will enable you to create a prayerfulness profile of yourself.

Here are his 10 of the 30 questions. In his book, he follows up with an explanation of each chapter.

  1. In your own life, how do you approach the people you meet and the ordinary activities of each day so that they become sacred?
  2. What preoccupies you in ways that seem to prevent you from seeing God?
  3. Are you someone who listens to others, or do you find that much of the time you are simply hearing them out while waiting for your opportunity to speak?
  4. What unfinished business from the past seems to continually intrude upon your present peace, and how do you address it in a prayerful way?
  5. When and how do you regularly meditate?
  6. Do you feel deprived of happiness because there are certain elements or people missing in your life?
  7. What experiences–regardless of their outcomes–provide you with the greatest satisfaction?
  8. Who in your circle of friends encourages a life a spiritual awareness, prayer, meaning, and compassion?
  9. Who and what are the most annoying people and situations for you, and what can they teach you?
  10. What do you believe robs you of your joy and peace?

Love Deeply ...
Valentine's Day is a good time to remember all the ways we can be loving, not just to the guy/gal sitting across from you at the kitchen table, but also your boss, your mother, your boss's mother, and her mother. One of my very favorite reflections from Henri Nouwen is "Love Deeply," found in hi

Therapy Thursday: Sweat
I have decided to dedicate a post on Thursday to therapy, and offer you the many tips I have learned on the couch. They will be a good reminder for me, as well, of something small I can concentrate on. Many of them are published in my book, "The Pocket Therapist: An Emotional Survival Kit." Work

Scrupulosity: What It Is and Why It's Dangerous
If you sprinkle a hefty dose of Catholic (or Jewish) guilt unto a fragile biochemistry headed toward a severe mood disorder, you usually arrive at some kind of a religious nut. Not that there’s anything wrong with that! For I am one. I have said many places that growing up Catholic, for me, was

The Treasures of Darkness
We often equate darkness with sorrow, misery, get-me-the-hell-out-of-here reaction. At least I do. That’s why I keep a mammoth Happy Lite on my smallish cubicle at work. But darkness can also be a treasure. Say what? J. R. Miller writes this in “From Streams in the Desert” by L. B. C

These questions seem like a “guiding light” along the path of prayer and worth spending some time answering…wll definitely want to take a close look at Wick’s book. Thanks Therese, as always, for bringing these excellent sources of useful information to us.
