Here’s a query I just read from ABC News:
If he were playing the part of an incensed, maniacal,foul-mouthed boyfriend on screen, Mel Gibson’s latest tirade may have won him an Oscar. Instead, it could prove to be crucial evidence in a domestic violence case brewing against him.
Gibson talked about being bipolar in a 2002 documentary – are his latest rants indicative of that? Would a bipolar diagnosis serve as a legitimate defense in court if he’s charged with domestic abuse? Does the fact that his phone calls with his ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, were leaked taint them as evidence?
Watch the video ….
This is just another example, in my mind, of the media calling crazy behavior bipolar because that’s the only term they know in the lexicon of mental illness. (Had they only read “Beyond Blue,” and they would have a generous vocabulary of terms for yelling, kicking, and screaming.) As I mentioned in my post, “The Informant! 7 Myths of Bipolar Disorder,” the first time Matt Damon’s character was called bipolar, I snickered along with the rest of the movie audience. By the third time, with allegations of compulsive lying attached to the diagnosis, I was miffed and left the theatre highly irritated.
Which is why I publish these myth buster pieces as often as I can.
Today’s list, “The Top 10 Myths About Bipolar Disorder” was compiled by HeathCentral’s John McManamy, who also writes the award-winning and hilarious blog, “Knowledge Is Necessity.”
I provide the first eight. Go to HealthCentral to get the others.
1. Everyone has their ups and downs, so mine aren’t that serious.
Yes, everyone has good days and bad days, but when these ups and downs seriously interfere with your ability to work, relate to others and function effectively, it is advisable to seek out a psychiatrist.
2. Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder.
Half true. Bipolar disorder certainly affects mood, but it also affects cognition and the ability to perform mental tasks. Some days we can out-think Stephen Hawking. Other days we make Forrest Gump look like an intellectual.
3. Yes, but bipolar disorder is still a mood disorder.
Granted, but for most of us it is also part of a package deal that may include anxiety, substance and alcohol abuse and sleep disorders. Also, researchers are finding smoking guns linking the illness to heart disease, migraines and other physical ailments.
4. Bipolar disorder is characterized by mood swings ranging from severely depressed to wildly manic.
Not necessarily. Most people with bipolar disorder are depressed far more often than they are manic. Often, the manias are so subtle that they are overlooked by both patient and psychiatrist, resulting in misdiagnosis. People with bipolar disorder can also enter long periods of remission.
5. Mania is like being on top of the world–if you could only put it in a bottle and sell it.
You wouldn’t want to with most manias. True, some forms of mild mania are characterized by feelings of elation, but other types have road rage features built in. More severe mania turns up the heat, resulting in different kinds of out-of-control behavior that can ruin your career, relationships and reputation.
6. Bipolar disorder is caused by a chemical imbalance of the brain.
This is the simpler explanation–what you tell your family and friends. What you need to know is our genes, biology and life experience make us extremely sensitive to stress. Various stressors, such as personal relationships and financial worries, have the potential to trigger a mood episode if not effectively nipped in the bud.
7. Medications are all you need to combat bipolar disorder. False. While medications are the foundation of treatment for bipolar disorder, recovery is problematic without a good lifestyle regimen (diet, exercise and sleep), effective coping skills and a support network. People with bipolar disorder also benefit from various forms of talking therapy and religious/spiritual practice. 8. Medications don’t work for me. For some people this may be true, but we all need to give our meds a chance. Treatment guidelines anticipate initial failures, and while no two guidelines are in agreement they are all based on the premise that eventually you will find a medication or combination of medications that will help you.

Has he ever been diagnosed by a doctor that he has Bipolar Disorder? People with severe bipolar disorder sometimes are a danger to themselves and others and need to be hospitalized. Every outbreak of mania is usually far worse than the previous one, and if he claims to have been bipolar since 1977, he’s probably a helluva lot worse now.

More people should be aware of these myths. I really appreciate the article. It has been pointed out to me that it seems like everybody is bipolar these days. Rather than simply dismiss it as something that is just an excuse to prescribe drugs perhaps there is some common source for these symptoms that is being overlooked. Like the shocking percent of people that will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in life. One in two women and one in three men. No citation but correct me if I am wrong.

Perhaps his extreme religious views are similarly a result of the same mental disorder?

You know, I just thought of it… Mel Gibson likely supports or owns shares of the evangelical company Affinity 4, which is a major partner of the recent buyout of this website.
“NYC Based Beliefnet Sold to Affinity4:
Recently Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation sold the religious website Beliefnet to the owners of Affinity4, a company run by evangelical Christians.”

Here’s an excellent editorial comparing Gibson’s recent tirades to his Passion of the Christ film…
http://www.opednews.com/articles/Mel-Gibson-s-Rant-as-Profo-by-Andrew-Bard-Schmoo-100714-421.html
“That is why Mel Gibson’s rant is so much more than mere celebrity gossip. It is crucial evidence about a basic, deeply troubling aspect of the American scene in our times. The fact that a major component of American Christianity, which in turn is a major part of the alliance comprising one of contemporary America’s two main political forces, resonated so deeply with Mel Gibson’s vision in THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST is strong evidence regarding the dark spirit that is at work in America today.”

^ Very interesting. I do see many similarities between Gibson’s rants and the Passion film.

Perhaps over the obsession with the life of one man when things like this happen day in and out to everyday people is a sign of mental illness too. If it were your neighbor or worst off, yourself, you won’t want to read about day by day updates, videos and so on. If your teen is a drug user, drinks underage, gets pregnant – how would you feel about your dirty wash being hung out for all to see?
Should every right winged conservative Christian be attacked for their bigotry, racism – Rush Limbaugh and Al Sharpton felt women who worked outside the home caused 9/11. Why doesn’t that raise questions about the dark side of religious fanatics?
Anyone who has studied psychology KNOWS that extreme religious practices ARE a form of mental illness, brought on by anxiety. Even FOX News Health posted a blog concerning this, not to mention countless hospitals & professionals in the field.
Next – regarding bipolar,
Mania is not a perquisite for Bipolar depending of the form. Mania that is not full blown is known as Hypomania and can appear as mild excitability, hyperactivity, hyperimagination.
Irratbility is NOT mania – it is referred to a mixed state, a combination of hypomania or mania with the irritability brought on by depression. For example – such as allowing a disagreement with an issue presented in a fictional movie irritate you into walking out. It must kill doctors to watch House or Lawyers to watch Law & Order!
Remissions must be looked at carefully. If one is medicated – the so called remission may only be a period of stability due to psychopharmacological therapy.
BP moods consist of a wide spectrum. It can produce notorious emotive oscillation between a phase of maniac or hypomanic elation, hyperactivity and hyper imagination, and a depressive phase of inhibition, slowness to conceive ideas and move, and anxiety or sadness. Only if all of these are absent can one claim to be in remission.
BP IS an organic/biological brain disease. Stress can set off mood swings – not the disease itself.
Religion DOES not cure or help bipolar, especially if this is not within your beliefs.
Borderline Personality Disorder is often mistaken for Bipolar. Doctors use the term bipolar for a patient with a personality disorder because most insurance companies will not pay for Axis-II disorders, while they will for Axis-I. Since the great overlap in criteria, it is an easy substitute although the treatments are polar opposites. This is being corrected in the DSM-V.
If anything, Mel Gibson’s behavior more closely resembles BPD in males, which is often mistaken for anti-social or narcissistic tendencies.
Living with BPD, which I did for twenty years when I was much younger, results in violent outbursts, verbal & mental abuse, addictions, relationship problems, impulsive behaviors and reactions, clinging to transitional objects & ideas, and so on. I am fully recovered and a certified Advocate and patient mentor for the mentally ill.
Read – learn – try empathy, understanding, and forgiveness before judging. This does NOT affect humanity or individuals. It does however; bring out the gossip, stigma, and lack of respect for another man’s privacy in the worst of people.

Wow! There’s plenty of verbal abuse in these comments already. Overgeneralization, (“right-wing fanatics”) arrogance, etc. Looks like people who believe in Jesus as Savior and Lord aren’t the only ones who are susceptible to bipolar or borderline personality disorder. Quit generalizing, and be straightforward about the real problem–the disease. These comments would hold more credibility if they would stick to the facts. By the way, thanks for the facts. Some of this stuff is helpful to us who are not medical experts.

The problem with this entry is that we are only able to guess what type, if any, mental disorders Mel Gibson may have.
On the other hand, there is a rather clear element of hypocrisy between his beliefs and his actions.
posted July 15, 2010 at 12:23 pm
It would be interesting to know whether mental illness causes only the reduction of inhibition leading Mr Gibson to declare such statements, or the actual racist hate and antisemitism he seems to hold.

Based on personal experience, Bipolar is not a defense for any behavior one does. Each person is held accountable for their actions in a court of law. Period.
Just like everyone else, we can only attempt to guess what he’s up to. As in all the other areas in the news being over-emphasized for drama — politics and money seem to be a way to manipulate many areas of life.
Just more drama, now from someone else who’s a high profile actor in Hollyweird. How about we elect him for governor of Calif. and let good ‘ol boy Mel drive this state further into bankruptcy for not knowing how to play the political game?!!

There is not reason for bad behavior, however, that’s if you know it’s bad. By personal experience and late diagnosing, my career and financial situation is in ruins.
Currently and with correct medication, I’m into remission for 8 months. The first few months were reality changing experience. I don’t think about suicide on near daily basis, and I don’t have 10 projects going on. Now, I can deal with my co-workers or I should say they can deal with me.
I’m trying to get my life back on track and have stable relationship. however, the misunderstanding of the disorder is keeping me from entering back in my profession as family physician with background in general surgery. And I’m at a job that I have held for 4 years. That is a first, I would only last maximum 2.
Finally, diagnosed at age 53 and have thought about suicide since the age of 13. I do miss the manic phase, you feel like you can solve the world’s problems.

I was diagnosed with Bipolar disorder in 2004. Suicide idealization was my coping skill for anything that went wrong in my life. I had a hard time getting along with my co-workers, had serious episodes of depression for weeks at a time, anger and rage that caused me to throw things, and then all of a sudden, life could not have been any better. It was very difficult for my loved ones to feel comfortable around me because they never knew what to expect. It literally took years for me to finally be regulated (med wise) and in those years of switching meds every 3-6 months I began drinking VERY heavily and got in to a world of legal trouble. I have been sober now for 9 months but have learned something interesting in my recovery that I thought I would share. Bipolar Disorder and drug/alcohol use or misuse, have the very same symptoms! Could I just be an alcoholic and not Bipolar? I don’t know for sure but in Mel Gibson’s case I can’t help but find it interesting that he has as drinking problem. Food for thought……………

I was diagnosed with Bipolar at the age of 16 — after 2 suicide attempts. I am now 42 years old. My cousin is also completely disabled from Bipolar. This is an illness or yes a chemical disorder within the brain. That some people have no control over — You can throw everything under the sun at them and it is what it is. Medicine, religion, therapy. But, if anyone thinks these things help everyone — they are mistaken.
Medicines didn’t help me, I have also found religion has nothing to do with Bipolar and exercise – whatever.
In the several years in have been Bipolar — with no medicine, no religion, no therapy and no exercise. I have made it on my own by controlling the situations and my life. I have the depressed moments and I have the moments that I am on top of the world. And you within yourself have to know how to deal with these situations mentally within your own mind. And controlling your life. You have to have foresight and be able to talk or think yourself out of the moments that everyone faces in life.
There are severe cases and yes those people need the medicine and therapy. But, for Mel it seems to me to be all situational stress that has lead up to all of this. And, I feel for him — always in the spot light – like all stars. It just fuels the situations and makes life situations even harder. I feel for him and everyone that is in the media spot light – to be examined and judged by the public. And who are we to judge?

One of the possible remedies for bipolar disorder, I believe, is breathwork and past life regression, something I haven’t seen discussed or explored. I personally have had contact with people whose behavior shifts dramatically into what could be seen as coming from a past life experience. There are techniques that are very effective in clearing the traumas and mindsets of the past so that the present reality is completely changed. I would love to see research done in this regard. Thank you for your work.

I am a woman, 72 years of age. I have had an extremely difficult life and when I was just about 21 years old was diagnosed as being Manic-Depressive. I was put on medication and underwent therapy with so many psychiatrists, pyschologists, mental health counselors, marriage counselors (even going alone), all kinds of group therapy and much more, and continued with all sorts of drugs. After I divorced my 3rd husband, I came to the realization that there was nothing wrong with me, but instead; my dysfunctional upbringing and all the crazy makers in my life I sought out because I felt they were normal, given my background. I did not know what normal was and therefore thought craziness was normal. You know the expression and I quote, “I am not crazy, it’s the people in my life?” I thought it was normal to have high and low mood swings and if I stayed level I would be boring. Had I realized all of this early on, I know I would not have been diagnosed as being manic-depressive (ie BiPolar?)
I finally turned to the Lord and found everything I needed to know was in the Bible and from Him and since I have a close walk with Jesus, my life has turned totally around – but I needed to go through so much Hell for 62 years. I met my 4th husband 10 years ago and it is a wonderful relationship and he is NORMAL…as I am these days, without – specialists and without medications- just my God..no more highs and lows and I assure you I am not boring.
Thanks for allowing me to share.

Although being bipolar myself, I can’t condone Mel Gibson’s episodes of rage. They have happened WAAAY too often. I hear pain in his rants…”nobody loves me,” “YOU deserve it,” “you can keep the house,” etc. Maybe he was diagnosed bipolar, and maube he wasn’t, but going on drinking binges doesn’t help the situation I was diagnosed bipolar for the last 42 years, having 3 hospitalizations for mania all in my 20s. I follow a strict treatment plan…meds, psychotherapy, group therapy,,,etc., and have found myself in “remision” for the last 33 years (so I must be doing something right!). However, even though I “appear” to have the bipolar “under control,” I NEVER fail to look over my shoulder, should the “Black Dog,” or the euphoria, overtake me without warning. This, I think, is the hardest part of having this diagnosis…it can’t be CURED, but it can be “maintained.” I am ever vigilant about my moods, and have had several “mini-episodes” treated on an out-patient basis. For right now, I can say I’m content…but for how long?? I don’t live in fear (I trust in God), but I AM cautious and very much aware that I can succumb to a mania at any time.
posted July 17, 2010 at 6:32 am
At what point do you stop trying to rationalize Mr Gibson’s rants by claiming a mental disorder and start condemning him for the underlaying content?
It’s all well and good to suggest the man needs help – he obviously does – but it’s not a far stretch to suggest that Hitler may have sufferred a similar malady.

Good Morning to All,
I agree what a good story……….but what part of it is true?? Just cause someone acts badly with bi-polar systems doesn’t mean he/she turely have a mental illness. I am so tired of hearing how these stars are trying to use mental illness as an out for their bad choices and behaviors! Just cause they are in the lime light doesn’t give them an excess to misuse the terms and conditions of mental illness so lossly to get themselves out of trouble. Yes, a star can have mental illness as much as the next person, but if he/she truely have the illness, then advocate for better treatment and care of indiv. with the illness. Use your stardom to make a statement for better understand and knowledge of the various forms of mental ill. not as a crutch!! Anyway, this is my take on the matter!

Mel Gibson is an amazing actor, director and movie maker. There are many actors I’m sure I wouldn’t like in real life. In fact, I’ve decided not to get to know their political affiliation a long time ago, so as not to ruin my movie experience. Movie going is supposed to be an escape.
I don’t know why anyone would want to ruin the father of their child’s reputation like this woman has done. Don’t they realize this child will grow up some day and see all this? They’ll read internet entries and even hear the sound bits? I think the photo she’s produced looks more like she had bad teeth before he fixed them, but why would I judge her anymore than I judge him? But she’s asked us to do just that.
I’ve said and done things I’d never want made public. I have manic depression and under extreme stress, things get said that just aren’t meant later. I don’t know why I say them, except that at the time, I mean every word. I’m upset. But later, I think – “I must have been insane.” So I’m sure Mel meant every word at the time. I don’t know him, just the many characters he’s played. Being an actor, he could be playing a part in his fury.
One thing for sure, I’m sorry to keep hearing about this every day. I hope he can settle with this woman and make peace in his life.

Sure, his wife wants money but its bigger than that. The setting up of Mel Gibson is in my view the work of “the prince of the power of the air” in concert with the liberal media to discredit the man who produced & directed a tremendously powerful and influential film about Jesus. Alec Baldwin’s drunken tirade at his daughter, Roman Polanski’s pedophilia and the ongoing Lindsay Lohan train wreck are all quicky excused but Gibson’s drunken rage will be replayed ad infinitum. I don’t excuse or condone his behavior but the reporting of it will never be fair or balanced.

We don’t know the entire story of what led up to Mel’s outrage. I don’t know anything about this woman, but being so much younger than Mel and having dated many celebrities, it sounds like she married him for his money and lifestyle. Maybe she’s ready to move on and because she probably knows he has a temper to begin with, she knows exactly how to push his buttons – you can hear the anger in his voice. Also, I think there are many people out there who are racist, but never disclose their feelings because of people’s reactions. I think many life experiences lead a person to become racist – a person is certainly not born that way. If that’s how someone feels, so be it.

I know that for women at my age, the hormonal imbalances that I suffer makes me exhibit symptoms similar to bipolar disorder. I have had people make comparisons to the hormonal imbalance to bipolarity. The illness of bipolar disorder has no clear definition and often people are misdiagnosed. It seems as if it can’t be defined, it must be bipolar. Not everyone is wired the same in the brain. If it is behavior that we don’t understand or comprehend, then it must be bipolar. This is humans’ way of labeling people who they cannot classify or undestand. Did you think that maybe Mel Gibson’s girlfriend may have provoked him enough to set him off? Every story has two sides. The media is a horrible medium for speaking the truth.

I HAVE BEEN MARRIED TO A MANIC-DEPRESSIVE FOR 26 YEARS. HE HAS BEEN IMPRISONED FOR ALL BUT 5 MONTHS. DRINKING, POT, OT ANY KIND OF SUBSTANCE WHICH ALTERS THE MIND WOULD SEND HIM INTO THE KINDS OF TIRADES MR. GIBSON EXPERIENCES. I HAVE THOUGHT TO MYSELF FOR YEARS THIS WAS HIS PROBLEM.
MY HUSBAND WOULD GET SO ENRAGED OVER THE SMALLEST OF THINGS. HE IS A WONDERFUL MUSICIAN, PLAYS GUITAR AND SINGS-COULD HAVE BEEN A COUNTRY STAR! ON OUR FIRST CHRISTMAS EVE TOGETHER, MY 2 SMALL CHILDREN AND I SAT ON THE FLOOR LISTENING TO CARPLS HE SANG TO US. MY 2 YR. OLD SON WAS VERY ACTIVE AND GOT UP TO WALK AROUND, NOT MISBEHAVING AT ALL. MY HUSBAND WENT INTO AN INSTANT RAGE, SMASHING HIS CHERISHED GUITAR TO PIECES, TERRIFYING US!
SOMETIMES HE WOULD GET SO ANGRY, IT WAS LIKE SOMETHING HAD TAKEN HIM OVER AND HIS EYES WERE NOT HIS OWN-I DID NOT SEE HIM IN THERE. I HAD TO GATHER THE CHILDREN FROM THEIR BEDS ONE NIGHT AND HIDE FROM HIM-THEY SAW MY FACE AND KNEW HELL WAS ON TH ELOOSE IN OUR HOME!
WHEN HE COMMITTED THE CRIME THAT LANDED HIM IN PRISON HE WAS MANIC AND DEPRESSED, SELF MEDICATING WITH A BAGGIE FULL OF MARIJUANA AND A LARGE SIZE BOTTLE OF JACK DANIELS IN A MOTEL ROOM AFTER EMPTYING OUR BANK ACCOUNT, ABANDONING US AFTER I TOLD HIM TO CHOOSE BETWEEN HIS FAMILY OR THE DRUGS. AND I KNOW WITH EVERYTHING IN ME THAT THIS MAN LOVED US, THAT I WAS HIS VERY HEART AND SOUL.
AT HIS SENTENCING, I WAS ABLE TO ADDRESS THE COURT AND TOLD THEM THAT THE MAN WHO COMMITTED THESE CRIMES WAS NOT THE MAN HE TRULY IS-THAT HE IS A LOVING FATHER, DEVOTED HUSBAND, KIND-HEARTED, TALENTED AND EXTREMELY INTELLIGENT. I BEGGED THE COURT TO NOT PUNISH HIM BUT GET HELP FOR HIM BECAUSE I KNEW WITH ALL I AM THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG.
TWO YEARS LATER THE B.O.P. HAD TO DO A PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION ON HIM AND A VERY OBSERVANT DOCTOR REALIZED HE WAS MANIC-DEPRESSIVE IN THE EXTREME. I BELIEVE HE NEVER WOULD HAVE SPENT ALL THESE YEARS IN PRISON HAD THE SYSTEM GOTTEN HELP FOR HIM. LITTLE WAS KNOWN ABOUT BIPOLAR AFFECTIVE DIORDER, SO I STARTED TO DO A LOT OF RESEARCH. I WROTE MY TERM PAPER ON BIPOLAR AFFECTIVE DISORDER AND GOT THE ONLY 100% GRADE IN THE CLASS FROM A PROFESSOR WHO DID NOT GIVE OUT 100% EVER! NOT BRAGGING-JUST TO SHOW HOW EXTENSIVELY I RESEARCHED ALL THAT WAS AVAILABLE AT THE TIME, IN 1985.
I SENT THE PAPER TO HIS PSYCHCOLOGIST, A PROMINENT PSYCHIATRIST IN L.A., THE PROSECUTING ATTORNEY, HIS COUNSELOR, THE WARDEN, THE HEAD OF THE FEDERAL BUREAU OF PRISONS-ANYONE AND EVERYONE I COULD THINK OF. THEY DID BEGIN TO USE HIM AS A LAB RAT. HE HAS BEEN ON SO MANY DIFFENT DRUGS, FROM THORAZINE (!) TO RESPIRADOL AND WAS SUBJECTED TO SHOCK TREATMENT! UNBELIEVABLE!
AT THE TIME OF HIS ARREST, I WAS 5 WEEKS PREGNANT WITH OUR DAUGHTER WHO BEGAN TO SHOW SIGNS OF BEING BIPOLAR AT 5 YRS. OLD! SHE WOULD GO INTO RAGES, AND HER EYES WERE VOID, JUST LIKE HER FATHER. I WOULD TAKE HER IN MY ARMS TO RESTRAIN HER AND GOT IN THE SHOWER AND RAN COLD WATER ON HER. SHE WOULD START TO CRY AND COME OUT OF THE RAGE-MY MOTHER CALLED THEM ‘FITS’. DURING PUBERTY SHE ATTEMPTED SUICIDE SEVERAL TIMES, HAD ALCOHOL POISONING AND ALMOST DIED ON ME ON THE WAY TO THE HOSPITAL. I KEPT HER OUT OF JAIL BY PLEADING WITH THE OFFICERS TO ALLOW ME TO CHECK HER INTO THE MENTAL WARD IN ANOTHER CITY AS SHE WAS NOT A BAD GIRL BUT HAD A MENTAL DISORDER. I HAD MEETINGS WITH HER TEACHERS, EXPLAINING HER LEARNING DIFFICULTIES, PROBLEMS INTERACTING, AND GAVE EACH ON A COPY OF MY TERM PAPER, TO NO AVAIL WHATSOEVER.
I BELIEVE MR. GIBSON SHOULD BE HOSPITALIZED. I AM SORRY MS. GRIGORIEVA HAS SUFFERED. I AM BAFFLED BY HER INDIFFERENCE-SHE IS MOST LIKELY TRYING TO HIDE HER PAIN. BUT I HOPE WITH ALL MY HEART THE THIS TALENTED MAN GETS HELP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE-HE IS PLEADING FOR IT BY HIS ACTIONS AND BELIEVES SHE HAS WRONG HIM-REAL OR NOT.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME. MY HUSBAND IS 50 YEARS OLD NOW AND HAS 10 GRANDCHILDREN HE COULD NOT WATCH GROWN UP, OR BE A FATHER TO OUR DAUGHTER. IN TWO YEARS HE WILL BE RELEASED. HE IS NOT ON ANY MEDICATION AND IS HAPPY AND WELL. HE RECOGNIZES WHEN HE NEEDS HELP, CAN IDENTIFY IT, AND TALK ABOUT IT INSTEAD OF ACTING OUT.
IF ANYONE IS AWARE OF LEGAL COUNSEL THAT COULD HANDLE SOMETHING LIKE MY MY HUSBAND’S SITUATION, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. WE DO NOT WANT THIS TO HAPPEN TO OTHERS WHO NEED HELP, NOT INCARCERATON.

PLEASE, folks, stop blaming the victim!
There have been absolutely *no* allegations made about this young woman. There have been no investigations against her. There have been no criminal charges against her. Nor have there been years of taped rantings that *she* has made!
However, Mel Gibson has been charged with drunken disorderly conduct. He’s being investigated for domestic violence. There have been multiple allegations made against *him* – anti-semite, racist, misogynonist, and violent. And we’ve seen, over years, his video and audio tapes witnessing his uncontrolled rage against any and everyone that is not like “him.”
If anyone has *evidence* of this woman doing *anything,* criminal, then by all means, bring it forward. But, until then, stop BLAMING THE VICTIM!
There is NO justification for what his is accused of — indeed, what he ADMITS to doing on the tape! He states, in his own words, “You deserved it!” in his drunken rage!!!
No one — ever — deserves to be punched in the face. Especially while they are holding a child.
Please, think before you post.
Blaming the victim is the great American past time.
But, I’m going to ask you to think about something.
Instead of asking, “What did she do to provoke this?”
Why not try asking, “Why does he think he can do this to ANYONE?”
Only then, can we begin to end domestic violence — whether it be a celebrity like Gibson, or the guy down the street from all of us.
Just think about it for a bit, ok? Because, it *is* our business.
Peace!

Was raised by an alcoholic mom and was married to an alcoholic, so I’ve seen a lot of behavior that is associated with the disease. I’ve seen both of my loved ones in the depth of the darkest places that alcoholism entails, including rage at the ones they loved the most. Hearing the tape of Mr. Gibson shot me back to times that I’d rather not visit, as it mimicked perfectly the cutting, cruel criticism laced with the most profane words imaginable. So rather than bipolar, I believe he’s an alcoholic. The bipolar diagnosis is in error, which I believe he threw out there in 2002 to “cover or explain” his unleashed tongue and rage while in the of the throes of alcoholism. He’s in need of help with his deadly disease of alcoholism, help that could free him of his inner pain, but that is only if he’s willing and devotes himself to living his life one day at a time.

Debbie: “There have been absolutely *no* allegations made about this young woman. There have been no investigations against her. There have been no criminal charges against her.”
Except that allegations have, in fact, been made.
The fact remains that Oksana Grigorieva recorded her telephone conversations with Mel Gibson, and of course she fully knows she’s recording the conversations. In case you are unaware, (a) it is illegal in California to record a conversation without the consent of all parties, (b) that numerous allegations have been made that the recordings made public have been edited and altered, and (c) that in many legal jurisdictions (e.g. in Europe) her actions would be considered an invasion of privacy and she (or her associates) could be prosecuted criminally and sued civilly for disclosing them.
In addition, medical records from Grigorieva’s dentist appear to contradict her claims of serious injury to her teeth. (Google it.) In reality, the injury to her tooth was probably relatively slight — a veneer came off. (Some web reports have even speculated that her slight tooth injury was in fact self-inflicted, but there is no hard evidence to prove or disprove that.)
And there have been numerous allegations that harshly criticize Grigorieva for behavior towards Gibson and their child that, if true, would be unacceptable in any civilized society. I have no knowledge of the veracity of these allegations, so I won’t repeat them here (Google it if you’re interested).
But together with allegations of privacy invasion and medical evidence inconsistent with her claims, it should be obvious that there have in fact been *several* allegations “made about this young woman”, that, if true, can have serious implications for her in criminal, civil, and family court.
Oh, and by the way, Grigorieva is not exactly a “young woman”. She was born in 1970, which would make her 40 years old in 2010. Not sure why her age is relevant, but it is worth noting her correct age for the record.

What is the relation between the bipolar mythe and Mr gibson?

I’ve been an observer of schizophrenia, depression and bipolar disorder for 40 years. What’s not understood that people with bipolar disorder tend to self medicate with alcohol and/or drugs. Alcohol especially because it’s ubiquitous and legal One of the stressors, the triggers, is constant financial demands. Note the Mel Gibson tapes. She asks for a dress. He flips out because he’s invested $5,000,000.00 in her career, she’s living in one of his houses, she drives his car, he pays for the houskeeper/nanny and she wants more. Now I live with this. My boyfriend has bipolar disorder and his ex-wife makes undue outrageous financial demands. He gets sick evertime she does it when he’s otherwise fine.

After one of my relatives was hospitalized from mania because he was out of control and a danger to himself and others, he had no memory of what happened during his the entire month he was manic. Mr. Gibson, however, probably remembers everything and doesn’t need to be reminded of what he said on the tapes. Mel needs help but let the professionals diagnose him. Just Google “Mel Gibson” and “Bipolar” and you get a lot of different results. This one link describes four different theories.

By the way, I found this link through Google.

I don’t see how people can listen to [all] those ranting tapes and fault Oksana for making them. She was listening to that stuff from before the baby was born. She endured being punched and threatened. She tried to give him every consideration to get help, but it continued. This was a continuing saga and her children were in grave danger. She has every right to tape a threatening lunatic who can harm her and her children. People have to wake up and see reality – that this guy is abnormal and has no reason to be so angry at her. He’s a bipolar alcoholic who needs meds – give him help but don’t make excuses for him.

This article is leaving out the fact that there is a Bipolar Disorder and a Bipolar 2 disorder. Bipolar Disorder is what used to be called manic depressive. Bipolar 2 disorder came about because people who have been on prescription anxiety medications, Prozac, Wellbutrin, Zanax, etc for long periods of time have found out that they stop working and they need to take more and the same thing happens to people that have abused street drugs. There is an excellent book entitled Will Medication Make My Pain Go Away. I suggest everyone who suffers from depression, anxiety, etc. read this book.

i’m not sure what is wrong with mel gibson, other than the fact he was stupid for losing his temper on the phone while his ex set him up to make these tapes to take him down. she for sure did not love him at all, she see’s he is in a bad place and she is striking while the iron is hot, when he supposeably punched her and she was so in fear for life she should have went straight to the cops like a normal person, the media circus she is putting on to destroy him is not the works of a woman who was once in love with her baby’s daddy!!! i don’t agree that hitting her while holding a baby was right, i’m against abuse on every level, i can see tho how his little pig of a ex might lead you to want to knock her teeth out tho, the show she puts on in public is amazing, i can’t imagine the show in private!!! no matter tho, walk away no matter what, especially while she is holding the baby. file for custody, leave her, not worth these problems!!! now he has the lable of every kind of crazy person. to me? he sounded like someone about to have a heart attach!!! how bad can you use someone and have no reaction? not fair!!! maybe she is the bipolar? how about we put her under the microscope and her evaluated??? is her behavior normal? maybe his reation in reality is actually justified!!! maybe not nice, but justified. where do live? fantasy island? you never saw a person lose their temper? with all the garbage we see in hollywood movies that is acceptble and all the other junk the media does that is alright and so much other garbage that is the new normal, a man loses his temper and we are so shocked with our virgin saint like selves? give me a break. and he has a mental illness? yeah ok. and what about her? she is normal? give me more meds if what she is is normal and what she did is acceptable and nice!!!! what about the baby? gets to grow up and see what her mother did to her father in public. thats nice, i would want to know my mother did that to my father. real cool ma!!! my dad was who?
