6 Favorite Prayers

posted by Beyond Blue

Here are my six favorite prayers … what are yours?
The Serenity Prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr
God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him Forever in the next.
Amen.
Prayer by Thomas Merton
My Lord God, I have no idea where I am going.
I do not see the road ahead of me.
I cannot know for certain where it will end.
Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you.
And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire.
And I know that if I do this
you will lead me by the right road
though I may know nothing about it.
Therefore will I trust you always
though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death.
I will not fear, for you are ever with me,
and you will never leave me to face my perils alone.

The Memorare
Remember O Most gracious Virgin Mary,
that never was it known that anyone who fled to your protection,
implored your help,
or sought your intercession
was left unaided.
Inspired by this confidence,
I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my mother.
To you I come;
before you I stand, sinful and sorrowful.
O Mother of the Word Incarnate,
despise not my petitions,
but in your mercy, hear and answer me.
Amen.
Prayer by John Henry Newman
Dear Jesus,
Help me to spread Your fragrance everywhere I go.
Flood my soul with Your spirit and life.
Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly,
that my life may only be a radiance of Yours.
Shine through me, and be so in me
that every soul I come in contact with may feel Your presence in my soul.
Let them look up and see no longer me,
but only Jesus!
Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as you shine,
so to shine as to be a light to others;
the light, O Jesus will be all from You;
none of it will be mine;
it will be you, shining on others through me.
Let me thus praise You the way You love best,
by shining on those around me.
Let me preach You without preaching,
not by words but by my example,
by the catching force of the sympathetic influence of what I do,
the evident fullness of the love my heart bears to You.
Amen.
St. Teresa of Avila’s “Bookmark”
Let nothing disturb you.
Let nothing frighten you.
All things are passing.
God alone is changeless
He who has patience wants for nothing
He who has God has all things.
God alone suffices.
Prayer of St. Francis of Assisi
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury,pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek?to be consoled as to console;?to be understood as to understand;?to be loved as to love.?For it is in giving that we receive;?it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;?and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen

There have only been a few prayers, that really move me, like Mother Theresa’s “Do It Anway” and the Prayer of St. Francis. Probably the most inspirational prayers are hymns, and John Foley’s Peace Prayer had been a guiding light for my Life (a version of the St. Francis Prayer) Music has alWays been the most sucessfull form of communication since the beginning of Time (and that’s why organized alWays uses it) many times words are not even necessary to be inspirational and spiritual!
I wonder how many people realize that the Lord’s Prayer is a curse … What !, He blasphemes ! … Think about this “Father, forgive us out trespasses … (as we forgive those, who trespass against us !)” Helow!

I also love St. Frabcis’s prayer and the Serenity Prayer.(There’s also a great spoof of that one called the “Senility Prayer which I find very amusing. Have you ever seen it? And again, Marjorie Holmes book of prayers, “I’ve got to Talk To Somebody, God” ALWAYS presents me with a prayer that fits my circumstances, worded extremely well.(Sometimes I think SHE lives in my psyche too, T. Perhaps you’ve bumped into her there!) The 23rd Psalm is another of my favorites, primarily thanks to my late, sainted Mother who recited it akoud while she was on her death bed actually walking through the valley of shadows.

Larry: WISDUM is RIGHT, by it’s very definition, faith cannot be scientifically proven! Ergo, you are ALSO right! Faith isan extremely personal issue, one with which Ive been struggling with myself of late (See my post on “Dear God: On Praying, However Imperfectly”) The absoluteLAST thing I want to be is a hypocrite, and yet I’m starting to wonder if indeed I am! All I can say is that I hope Therese and Thomas Merten are right and that God knows my heart is desirous of believing and serving Him and that’s enough! There are moments when this personal walk is harder to navigate than a Michigan roadway once the winter’s freezings have thawed and left behind a bed of porholes, some of which seem deep enough to actually swallow your vehicle! I’d like to be able to say that my faith is unwavering, but, sadly, that wouldn’t be the truth! I think Doubting thomas must have a place in my family tree from centuries ago; there are definitely moments when I need “proof” I take solace in the fact that when Thomas demanded the same, Christ didn’t back away from him in disgust but willingly offered his wounds for inspection. Hopefully that meand there is hope for me and others like me who find themselves wanting at times. (I worry sometimes that at judgment He will “find me lukewarm and ‘spit me out of His mouth”; there are certainly MANY others I personally know whose faith is steadier than mine is. That doesn’t mean I give up, however. It means I keep putting one foot in front of the other and “keep on keeping on.”

Hi Margaret ! Hope you don’t mind my re-sponding
Faith is an extremely personal issue,
** You are absolutely right about that! And that explains a lot of the de-pression out there. All our Lives, we have been im-pressed upon, to believe a lot of crap, we do not believe in our hearts. What makes it worse is those people that do it are who we are led to believe are the righteous and holy (or is that self-righteous and holey ?) It is almost impossible to continuously accept that which goes against the Truth in your heart (and the Truth will set you free !)
The absolute LAST thing I want to be is a hypocrite, and yet I’m starting to wonder if indeed I am!
** We are ALL hypocrites ! We project a facade that we hope and think will draw people into us and be our friends and Love us. Is my costume in this Theater of the Mind any more perfect than yours ? One thing for sure “the Truth, the Light and the Way” shall come out
my heart is desirous of believing and serving Him and that’s enough
**When I surrendered to God, He asked me “What do you want to do with your Life” and I said excitedly, “I want to do God’s work !”… and God responded “What’s the matter, you don’t like the Way I AM doing it ?” (ooops !)
I’d like to be able to say that my faith is unwavering, but, sadly, that wouldn’t be the truth
** As far as I can tell, ain’t nobody walking the straight and narrow … and that last guy who did, got crucified !
there are definitely moments when I need “proof”
** That has been my problem all my Life. When I asked the so called “Authorities” a serious question about theology and faith, they would tell me “It’s a mystery “ … After hearing that thousands of times, I finally responded with “You know what, it’s not a mystery ! Either you don’t know the answer, or you are lying to me. I’m going to find out the Truth, and when I do (and I will) I’m coming back here and confront you with it ! (or is that pro-front ?)
He will “find me lukewarm and ‘spit me out of His mouth”
** That’s how you came into being ! … God said “Let there be Margaret” … and there was Margaret … (sometimes God spits out milk toast, and sometimes “Red Hot Chile Peppers”)
It means I keep putting one foot in front of the other and “keep on keeping on.”
** Right on ! . . .You go Girl ! . . . (Walk With Me)

Man alive! That was just what I thought (Well now, that will help with depression!!?) when I was reading Larry reply…
If we think back on when we started getting depressed I’ll be it was as we were entering out teens – when we had very important questions that were reidiculed, ignored, poo-pooed, and/or rebuked. Why is it that we can not simply accept that other people have the right to ask questions and expect answers, and that other people have the right to believe what’s in their hearts?

Cully, with all due respect, that’s extremely presumptuous. Yes, I experienced teen-age hazing, but one of the few benefits of depression is that I have become more accepting of other people. The problem is, I have become less accepting of MYSELF — and of my place in G-d’s heart, if there even is one.
Wisdum is right in that ultimately, whatever your faith, we are all sinners and whether you believe in karma or a more traditional Judeo-Christian model, we probably deserve to be punished. Some, however, have confidence that Jesus of Nazareth was of the divine (the Christ) and had the power to expiate our sins with his death (and rising).
**But what if that’s not true?** Such a prospect, for someone raised in Christianity as I was, inherently makes the world a dangerous and indeed paranoid place.
And none of us are Thomas, with a chance to have our doubts disproven — we are stuck with our doubts. (Lucky him, as even Jesus said.)
Mind you, I’m not an atheist or even an agnostic. It’s not that I don’t care about G-d — I do, desperately. Which is why I’m so frightened I can’t get in touch with him, in all senses of that phrase.

** The Bible says “ALL have sinned, and have fallen short of the Glory of God” (I wonder if that Yeshuah/Jesus guy was included in the ALL ?… There is a whole lot of Time missing from the Bible…12 to 30 ?… you think that Time didn’t coincide with Roman theology agenda ? hmmmm)
Some, however, have confidence that Jesus of Nazareth was of the divine (the Christ) and had the power to expiate our sins with his death (and rising).
** I don’t think many people get it that, it was not the crucifixion, death and resurection (the Romans crucified thousands of people along the Apian Way)that saved us, but it was this crazy notion that this Son of God was willing to sacrifice Himself, and spend an eternit in Hell, for all the rest of us! (by the Way, it ain’t no sacrifice, if you are sent…you have to volunteer! … just like ALL the rest of the Soldiers of the Christ/Chosen … “Pick up your cross, and follow Me” … on the other hand, that may not be, your cup of tea!)

Larry, what part was “extremely presumptuous”? Was it my opinion that when someone who suffers from bouts of depression states that “Father/God has proved to me, beyond a shadow of a doubt that God exists. Not only exists, but also is part of every thread in this Tapestry of Life” and someone else responds with a Prove It challenge and then negates their response it is not helpful?
The first serious bouts of depression I experienced where in my early teens – when most children are starting to strech their *grown-up* feelers by asking questions and expressing opinions. Like Wisdum, my questions were met with non-answers, disinterest, and (at times) anger. The one question that I would have loved to hear is, “Why do you ask, do you feel that way, do you have doubts?” I think it was pretty wonderful of Wisdum to explain his feelings and what happened to him; and, that is “proof” enough for me about why Wisdum believes that, “Father/God has proved to me, beyond a shadow of a doubt that God exists. Not only exists, but also is part of every thread in this Tapestry of Life”.
I didn’t see the part where Wisdum says that we all deserve to be punished. I’ll go back and re-read.
You wrote: “Mind you, I’m not an atheist or even an agnostic. It’s not that I don’t care about G-d — I do, desperately. Which is why I’m so frightened I can’t get in touch with him, in all senses of that phrase.”
Larry, honey, God is in touch with you right now. Be still, forget everything you have ever been told “god” is or feels or wants – be still. Relax – when God said “Let there be Larry” God smiled and saw Larry was a good thing. Be still, relax, let the b.s. go and know that God loves you.
I’m sorry if you thought everything I wrote was about you – I was thoughtless to have identified you in connection with your statement, and the rest was a general observation of how “grown-ups” often respond to children who want desperately to be part of that *grown-up world*.

Cully:
I think Wisdum himself acknowledged the flawed nature of humanity (again) in his most recent post.
And I apologize, because (yes) I thought you were oversimplifying, but I also have regrets because I clearly expressed manic behavior as a teen and no one (including a school psychologist) thought to refer me for further evaluation that might have discovered my bipolar disorder.
That said … what if you try to get into that small, still place, and you STILL have no confidence that “Larry was a good thing”? (I may do good things, but that’s different — and I’m human, I do bad things too, of course.)
**What then?**

I guess I should actually say something on topic …
The Prayer of St. Francis is my favorite, for sentimental reasons (my grandfather’s patron saint was Francis) and because it is far easier to imagine myself giving than receiving. Of course sometimes I’m selfish (I’m human) and sometimes I do receive wonderful gifts (earthly and otherwise), but I’m generally, well, happier giving than receiving.
The Serenity Prayer is my second favorite, although I have my doubts that even reasonable happiness is possible in this life.

** Now there’s the problem with being a Jersus Freak (bear in mind that you also have to expect nothing in return and thank them for it !)… Now there’s some enLightenment … “Thanks for nothing !”
but I’m generally, well, happier giving than receiving.
** So ! … Whutz da prolem?

Our One:
Our Father, our Mother
who is innocent and pure–
‘Holy’ is your name.
May Love be seen as All That Is,
May earth be seen as Heaven is.
Nourish us this day with your bountiful supply
And allow us to receive,
As we give that right to others.
Release us from the perils of illusion,
And renew our perception of Truth.
For Truth is the Kingdom,
And Love is the Power,
And Yours in the glory
Forever.
Amen.

I loved all the prayers. My favorites are, The Serenity Prayer’, and Thomas Merton’s prayer. I say them every day. Another one of my favorites is,’ Prayer for a New Day’. It goes:
Dear God,
Thank You for this new day, its beauty and its light.
Thank You for my chance to begin again.
Free me from the limitations of yesterday.
Today may I be reborn.
May I become more fully a reflection of your radiance.
Give me strength and compassion and courage and wisdom.
Show me the light in myself and others.
May I recognize the good that is everywhere.
May I be, this day, an instrument of love and healing.
Lead me into gentle pastures.
Give me deep peace that I might serve You most deeply.
Amen.
I don’t remember where this prayer came from. Does anyone know this prayers origin and author?
God Bless You All,

My personal favorite: The Lords Prayer.
When I was a child it was just words that my mom taught me and we’d say it every night. I would then “bless” everyone I could think of. (Dear God, bless my mom, my dad, my sisters, my cat, my dog, my friend etc….) AMEN! :)
At 41, I have a whole new outlook on the prayer. My mom died when I was 15 but I am so Thankful she said this prayer with me every night!
You can live your life by this prayer…………..
Gather with friends and worship HIM together (“OUR” father);
worship and honor the Lord (hallowed be thy name);
Show your faith in your actions and character (they kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in Heaven);
Appreciate all that you have (Give us this day our daily bread);
Learn & Practice Forgiveness (forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those that trespass against us);
Stay strong in your faith, values and beliefs (lead us not into temptation and deliver us from evil);
And at the end of the day….give all the honor, glory and power to HIM once again…. (For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever and ever. Amen
That’s just my own personal point on this prayer. I’m sure some can pick it apart but it’s how I use it and how I am teaching it to my own children instead of just words you say to make you feel good!

Another one of my favorites is by St. Theresa (the Saint of little ways)
St. Theresa’s Prayer:
May today there be peace within. May you trust your highest power that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you….May you be content knowing you are a child of God…. The prayer by Thomas Merton was particularly meaningful to me because I think I have lost touch with God. We are going through some of the worst possible things in our marriage and we have two kids we want to be safe here and with God. When the adults have no idea where they are going or where this will end, it is difficult to make the kids feel secure. If I didn’t have the kids I think I would end this life and hope than God has something better on the other side. I will have surgery in a few weeks and can not avoid it. How will I take care of my family then among the other things that are going on. I wonder as Jesus did, “My God Hast Thou forsaken me?”

In difficult times, God sometimes appears through others around us. Do you have any circle of friends or people (perhaps at a church nearby?) who could assist you during your recovery period? Even if you don’t know anyone at a local church, it might be worth it to give them a call and find out if they have some kind of support group. Often they do, and they could do wonders in your time of trouble. I’ll be praying for you, your marriage, and your kids. -Sue

It was just by a slim chance that I read this email today. I have been losing my faith slowly over this last month. I lost my job at the beginning of this month and have been looking ever since and still do not have one. I am a single parent trying to survive in this world and in less than 2 weeks I am going to lose my apartment and have no way to take care of my kids. I have been in these types of situations all my life and I can not help but wonder…..”God why are you letting this happen again in my life?” It just seems like no matter what I do it is not good enough or works for me to have a happy life. I have fallen in a hole of despair that I am not sure I can recover from this time. I am trying to keep my faith but it is failing me. Thank you for helping me to find a little to hang on with.

To “Fellow Traveler” – I am so saddened by your very honest comments. I pray that God will reach down and touch your life with His love and encouragement that you will be lifted above this cloud of despair.
Don’t ever even consider taking your own life to solve whatever you are facing. Hope is what we have in Jesus Christ and taking one’s life is a sin, countering everything that keeps a Christian going. Jesus is the Light at the end of the tunnel, He is the Way, the Truth that leads to life eternal. God loves you and I love you.

The Serenity Prayer is very special to me. My sister and I lost our daughters 20 years ago in a wreck. About 2 weeks after the tragic accident I went to a jewelry store just to look around and I came across a heart necklace with the praying hands on the front and in the back was the serenity prayer so I bought it. I put pictures of our daughters in the locket and everyday would say this prayer, I truly believe that this prayer got me through this horrible time in my life and to this day I still say this prayer! I don’t know what I would do without prayer and just having faith that our daughters are HOME.

To “Fellow Traveler”, Kelly and Katherine, GOD is a very present help in the time of trouble. I pray that the Lord will intervene and send help speedily to all of you. I know what lack and suffering is, so I can identify with you somewhat. But I also know who holds tomorrow and who surely holds each and every one of our hands. The Word of God tells us that HE is touched by our infirmities. I pray the prayer of Jabez for each of you that GOD will enlarge your territories and bless you indeed. I know that sometimes when we are going thru a period of uncertainty and despair, it is hard to focus on GOD and the Promises that HE has given to us. One of which is “I will never leave you or forsake you…. I can’t offer you shelter or clothing or money but I can pray the prayer of faith that the manifestation of GOD’s Love and Care will be very evident in your life RIGHT NOW!!!

Yeshuah said “Pray like this” (not “pray this”)
MORNING PRAYER
Good morning, Father Yahweh !
How are You today ?
May I offer my Life up to You
As we go along the Way
And may everything
I think, do and say

I would like to ask everyone to join in Prayer everyday for each other, even if we do not know how to, a whispered word to God said sincerely, he will most definitely understand…these prayers are so warm and heartfelt it is as if they are your own words, spoken to God from your heart, I love them, and would make them my daily prayers.I am thankful for this site and everyone involved, you are a Godsend, Thank you…also,believe that in all our situations and challenges both great and small, we must take them to God in Prayer…for in all things let us give thanks unto God for His wonderful creation, for the good and bad that may have happened to us, be it sickness, death, financial, mental or physical challenges, there are reasons for these things that only God knows of, just Trust Him, Pray daily, for God our Father has already worked out the plans and purpose for our lives, know that with God, not one thing or two but with Him all things are possible. Have Faith, Pray and Trust Him to do it for you and me.He is working behind the scenes just for us.

I believe in prayers too. I had a rough life before and after marriage with a controlling freak husband who still makes my life miserable after seven years divorce, he wouldn’t stop until I am on the street homeless or die of a heart attack.
But through my trials and tribulations, my prayers made me strong to carry on the bitter divorce I had, taking care of three children, going back to school and working made my life turnaround in a positive way instead of being miserable.
I believe that prayers cannot always answer all our problems, but it is a security to guiding us to the realism that by faith, whatever religion it may be makes us stronger and confident that tomorrow will be another day to be hopeful to live and move on.
And at the moment I pray for my kids and a special someone that I met that hopefully need some strenght in his life.

I believe in the power of prayer. Once I recieved an email about creating a beautiful box and labeling it SFGTD ( something for GOD to do) I have used this idea in my work with terminally ill clients. I have used this concept for my own needs and it really work. When something is too difficult to deal with.. Pray for guidance and place your petitions in your prayer box ..God will answer your prayer in his time…not yours..It will be the perfect time trust me. I no longer hold on to troublesome thoughts. I pray in my own words ,I meditate and the words just come to me . I have daily conversations with our creator.
Thank you for the six prayers listed I printed them . I loved St. Teresa Of Avila’s ‘BOOKMARK’ prayer and The serenity prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr.

It has been said sometimes you have to go the devil to be saved. It is biblical but I don’t recall where in scripture it is.(time for me to research) The point however is that you need to hit bottom before you’ll finally accept God’s help. Sometimes it is so difficult to understand why so many bad things happen to good people.( or maybe not-so-good?) It rains on the good and bad alike. God does’nt prevent bad things from happening. What He does is grieve with you, He helps you cope with the bad things that LIFE does to you. His promise is to dry every tear in heaven and if you let him by opening your heart to Him he will help you now in the flesh. Every time you talk to God you are praying. Their is nothing that causes more joy in heaven than the return of a soul from the dark side.( Prodigal Son) “I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance” No matter how bad things get there is hope!!!

Thanks for sharing these wonderful prayers with us.
In my struggle with sin,or should i say,the ups and downs of a christians life,i have always found solace in the fact that God loves me and identifies with any given situation.
For this was the essence of Christs mission on earth.
Prayer to me means singing christian songs,spontaneously opening and reading any chapter of the bible that comes to my mind,praying and speaking with God.
I am personally thrilled by the books of Psalm and Isiah.
Above all things, even in my lowest points, i always feel the grace and presence of the Lord all around me,whether am awake or asleep.

Let me straighten after pain, as a tree straightens after the rain,
Shining and lovely again.
God, make me brave for life; much braver than this.
As the blown grass lifts, let me rise
From sorrow with quiet eyes,
Knowing Thy way is wise.
God, make me brave, life brings
Such blinding things.
Help me to keep my sight,
Help me to see aright

I HAVE THATPRAYER IN MY STUDY AND ANYTIME ANYONE COMES OVER UPSET OR CONFUSED I SEND THEM IN THERE TO MY CHAIR WHERE THEY READ THAT AND I HAVE A JOURNAL FOR ALL COMERS, THEY MAY WRITE ANYTHING THEY WANT, I HAVE BEEN ON THIS JOURNEY FOR A COUPLE OF YEARS NOW. YOU WOULDNT BELIEVE THE AWESOME STUFF THAT HAS HAPPENED JN THAT JOURNAL, FOR INSTANCE MY DAUGHTER LITTLE MOON,HAD BROKE UP WITH HER FIRST LOVE AWHILE BACK, SHE WROTE IN THE JOURNAL,”DAD I DONT AND CANT HANDLE TALKING ABOUT JUSTIN RIGHT NOW, SO IF YOU DONT MIND WE WILL DEAL WITH IT IN THESE PAGES” WELL OF COURSE THAT BLEW MY MIND AND THEN REALIZED WHAT A BEAUTIFUL THING GOD HAD SENT ME BY STARTING THE JOURNAL,FROM THERE SHE WOULD COME OVER WHEN EVER AND UPDATE ME AND OTHERS OF HOW IT WAS GOING, THATS JUST AN EXAMPLE OF THE GRACE I HAVE BEEN GIVEN,YA KNOW ITS BEEN QUITE A WHILE NOW AND WE STILL HAVENT DISCUSSED IT BUT THATS OK BECAUSE SHE HAS BEEN HEALED FROM THAT PAIN, HER NEW BOYFRIEND EVEN READ IT AND SAW WHERE SHE WAS COMING FROM IN THE BEGINING OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP.. ALL I ASK IS WHO EVER WRITES IN IT TO BE TRUTHFULL AND TO KNOW ANYONE CAN READ IT. THE OTHER THING I ASK IS AFTER THEIR DONE WRITING AND READING IN IT TO CLOSE IT{AND NOT STEAL MY PEN, ONLY KIDDING} AND TO SIT IN SILENCE FOR AT LEAST 5 MINUTES, FOR I LET THEM KNOW IT IS JUST AS IMPORTANT TO LISTEN AS WELL AS ANYTHING IN LIFE. AT FIRST SOME THOUGHT IT WAS CORNY AND I HAD TO REMIND THEM BEFORE THEY LEAVE THEY MUST GO TO THE JOURNAL. NOW I DONT HAVE TO SAY A WORD, IT SEEMS LIKE THEY CANT WAIT TO GO IN THERE AND SEE OR FEEL WHATS NEXT. I DONT KNOW WHY I WENT OFF ON THAT TANGENT BUT GOD TELLS ME AND GUIDES ME. NOW MY FAVORITE PRAYER IS IN THE MIGHTY NAME OF JESUS CHRIST I REBUKE YOU SATAN ,ITS SIMPLE BUT IT WORKS .I GET TESTED ALOT BY EVIL THOUGHTS OR SITUATIONS AND AS SOON AS I BRING THAT STATEMENT TO SATAN HE BACKS RIGHT OFF, SOMETIMES I HAVE TO SAY IT MORE THAN ONCE TO GET ME OUT OF MY FLESH AND INTO MY SPIRIT. WHAT A GLORIOUS PLACE TO BE, I ONCE HAD A DOG I NAMED SPIRIT BUT SHE HAS SINCE MOVED ON. IF ANYONE READS THIS I AM SORRY FOR BABBLING ON, BUT YA KNOW THIS IS KINDA LIKE A JOURNAL. :GOD BLESS TO ALL OF YOU, ALL YOUR PRAYERS ARE SPECIAL, I THANK YOU AND THERESE YOU BEAUTY KEEP ON TRUCKIN,JESUS LOVES YOU AS WELL AS MANY OTHERS. The Serenity Prayer and St. Francis’ “A Prayer for Peace” have always touched me.
I remember the first time I read the prayer of St. Francis, I was overcome with “tears”, the beauty of his prayer, his total humility and love for Jesus and all creatures, his utter simplicity and his suffering which was great, for like most of the saints, he was totally misunderstood and was considered a “nut.”
I read this everyday and I still “tear up” each and every time. I have great feelings for this wonderful, simple Franciscan, and also for dear St. Anthony, who always finds “lost things” for me and is “The Saint of the Poor.”
There is another prayer by St. Francis de Sales which is very much to the point, difficult to apply, but keeps us in the now:
Have No Fear for what tomorrow may bring.
The Same loving God who cares for you today
will take care of you tomorrow and every day.
God will either shield you from suffering
or give you unfailing strength to bear it.
‘Be at peace then, and put aside all
anxious thoughts and imaginations.’
My heart goes out to all the posters who suffer so much, I pray for each and everyone of you. Please don’t stop your prayers no matter how little you feel like praying, for all the troubles you have in life and the enormous burdens you carry day in and day out, God and His Son feel enormous love and sadness for all that you endure and despair.
BELIEVE!

Whether we pray outloud, at a specific time each day, or ‘on the run,’ God knows our heart and mind – What would you expect from such a loving parent??? :) He is powerful and awesome! I know – because He continues to love me even when I can’t seem to hear or learn the lessons He presents to me. I, too have questioned whether He needs a new hearing aide, but know that it may be me that needs one. I pray that each person who reads this will continue to trust and obey by seeking His love and wisdom through prayer. It truly is a powerful instrument. Even though I don’t know each of you, I pray for you – In Christ.

God is not deaf. He always hear our prayers. Remember, that his “time” and “place” are not the same as ours. Food for the soul that I have acquire along the way : “Go on a certain way, and if you do not receive that thing, you will receive something so much better that you will see that the seeming failure was really a great success.” God always answer: “Yes,” “No,” or “You got to be kidding!” I always like to put some fun into things, but the answers I believe are true.

C and Kay:
I go through the same thing — NOT the “unanswered prayers” Garth Brooks spoke of (which are good for us), but the “ignored prayers.”
The question I keep coming up with is, if G-d finds our prayers unworthy of even being listened to, why is G-d worthy of our faith and love?
(PS — I’m not an atheist — the question is asked more in the context of Job’s long debate with his “friends” who accused him of sin to bring on his afflictions, during the Book of Job.)

God always hears our prayers. ALWAYS. I just believe that there are some things we aren’t meant to know. It would be too much for us too handle. He will answer our prayer in the time and fashion that we can handle. You are never alone, and when you think you are, Footprints is my favorite prayer. I believe He is carrying me thru a difficult time. Maybe that is what is happening to C. He is carrying you. Dont loose faith.

That was really nice. I was raised in the Catholic Church and while I am not the most disapline of followers, there still no where in the world better than a quite church. Never once have I gone into a church asked God to take my burdens, that he did not (even when my burdens were self inflicted and there was absolutely no reason for him to kindley forgive me and set my soul at piece).
I was once at a confirmation class with my baby sister, we where seperated into groups,someone in that group was dictating the proprities of pray. And then they had the audacity to collectively as well as condesendingly look down their noses and asked what my relationship with God was, Well I got pretty agitated at the tone and manner this question was posed. You see,I have zero tolerence for persons who call themselves Christian, they come faithfully in their finest couture, all smiling and seemingly welcoming and yet the second they leave that church they take great pride to pass and sit in judgment of anyone that is abit more liberal then they. I think these are the worst kind hypocrites. We all have skeletons, why should you presume yours are less offensive then mine? Anyway, the point was my answer to this group was `My relationship with God is my relationship´ none of anyones bussiness, and how dare they presume to tell me their version of how it should be.
Sorry for hopping on that soap box, I just wanted to thank you for sharing these prayers. I will carry them with me and definately incorporate them in my conversations.
Kind regards,
Holly

THE PRAYERS WERE INDEED BEAUTIFUL!! IT HELPED ME TO READ THEM. BUT YOU KNOW, FOR A LONG TIME, I DIDN’T DO MUCH PRAYING COS I THOUGHT YOU HAD TO BE ALL ELOQUENT AND STUFF TO TALK TO OUR “HEAVENLY FATHER”. YOU KNOW, COS HE’S THE HEAD GUY, AND YOU JUST COULDN’T POSSIBLY TALK TO HIM LIKE WE TALK TO EACH OTHER. WELL, THAT CAME I BELIEVE FROM A DEAD, DRIED UP CHURCH I WENT TO AS A CHILD. WHEN I BECAME GROWN, I STARTED GOING TO A SPIRIT-FILLED CHURCH, NON-DENOMINATIONAL. MAN, WAS I IN FOR SOME SURPRISES!! ONE OF THE BEST IS THAT, I WAS GIVEN THE REVELATION FROM GOD THAT I COULD TALK TO HIM JUST LIKE I TALK ANYWAY!! OF COURSE, I USE RESPECT, BUT I COULD TALK TO HIM, TELL HIM ALL MY FEELINGS AND YOU KNOW, GOD HAS A HECK OF A SENSE OF HUMOR!! NEVER THOUGHT OF GOD LIKE THAT, BUT WHY NOT?? HE CREATED EVERYTHING, RIGHT? MAN, GOD IS REALLY AWESOME AND HE IS COOL. REALLY!! SO NOW I CAN GET THE CONVERSATION ROLLING AND IT’S SO MUCH EASIER TO GET THE PRAYERS SAID AND SEE RESULTS. AND HONEY, YOU THAT SAID YOU JUST DON’T FEEL HIM? REMEMBER, WE CAN NOT LIVE ON OUR FEELINGS. YOU GOTTA LEARN TO LIVE ON TRUSTING HIM 100% AND FAITH, IT ALL RUNS HAND IN HAND ANYWAY. GOD JUST RECENTLY IN SUCH A BEAUTIFUL GENTLE MANNER HAS TAUGHT ME HOW TO TRUST HIM ALL THE WAY, AND YOU KNOW, IT BRINGS SO MUCH PEACE AND KICKS THE DEVIL IN HIS YOOO HOOO. MAN, I LOVE THAT!! ANYWAY, GOTTA QUIT RAMBLING ON, JUST WANT TO ENCOURAGE YA’LL OUT THERE, KEEP ON PRAYING, I KNOW IT FEELS LIKE YOUR PRAYERS ARE BOUNCING OFF THE CEILING AT TIMES, BUT THEY AREN’T! JUST TRUST IN HIM, HE WILL TAKE CARE OF IT!!!

I read the “Serenity Prayer,” but had no idea it was as long as it was. Usually, one only reads the first four lines, not the extended version. However, in all 6 prayers, there is new insight that God can be approached in prayer as a friend; unlike the Pharisee who prayed in the marketplace in a flowery and arrogant manner, going to God in prayer is simple – see the Lord’s Prayer.
In a sense, I “pray without ceasing.” I’m constantly thanking him for the little things – like spying a squirell on my balcony eating nuts I’ve laid out, to having the elevator door open as soon as I press the button – as well as the BIG things. He hears all prayer; I believe. He is all-knowing and all-forgiving; we go to Him in joy and sorrow, and He hears. Nothing is too trivial for God.
May God bless you all real good.

Good morning all:
I am a new Christian, and do have a deep faith and love of God. I realize that I need to find a “home” by way of finding a church where I can find comfort, peace and joy.
I desperately need help learning how to give all my troubles and cares to God and letting go, and showing complete faith and trust in Him. Despite my spirituality, being a new Christian, and not growing up in a Christian home or church, I am not finding it easy to give it all to God, and letting go.
I would appreciate any words of advise as to how I can do this and walk away, leaving it all to God, without having feelings of angst durning the day.
Thank you and God Bless you.

Dear Lord Jesus let all who cross my path know,that I come in peace,and that you are in me and I am in you.
Let them see your love in my eyes, your compassion at my touch, and know that I have your mercy in my heart,
and please dear Lord grant me the grace to touch many hearts with your love this day.

I really think all of these prayers are wonderful, but for me and I think for most people, prayer to Jesus is our personal conversation with him as our friend. It changes at different parts of the day and week, according to what we are facing or going through. God is real and our prayer should be just as real and heart felt. I feel that we have a tendency to get too religious, instead of relational!

I tell him I am heartsick. And lost and lonely, too. That my mind is deeply burdened and I don’t know what to do.
But I know he stilled the Tempest and calmed the angry sea. And I humbly ask, if in His love, he’ll do the same for me.
And then I just sit quietly. And think only thoughts of peace. And as I abide in stillnes, my restless murmurings cease.

My favorite prayer by Maya Angelou – particularly the line about “waterfalls of tenderness” – also address times to loneliness and depression – a comfort during trying times.
Prayer
Father, Mother, God
Thank you for your presence
during the hard and mean days.
For then we have you to lean upon.
Thank you for your presence
during the bright and sunny days,
for then we can share that which we
have with those who have less.
And thank you for your presence
during the Holy Days, for then we are
able to celebrate you and our families
and our friends.
For those who have no voice,
we ask you to speak.
For those who feel unworthy,
we ask you to pour your love out
in waterfalls of tenderness.
For those who live in pain,
we ask you to bathe them
in the river of your healing.
For those who are lonely, we ask
you to keep them company.
For those who are depressed,
we ask you to shower upon them
the light of hope.
Dear Creator, You the borderless
sea of substance, we ask you to give all the world that which we need most
–Peace. Amen.

My favorite prayer, but of course, it could only the Lords Prayer, especially the verse, “thy kingdom come, thy WILL BE DONE” It is also sung as a hymn in some services. Two members of my extended family have gone to Heaven and this was sung at their funerals. Our Father who art in heaven, your kingdom , your will be done on Earth as it is Heaven.give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors ( or trespasses) and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the Kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. AMEN. ( Matthew 6:9-13). When you dont know how to pray, use this prayer as a guide.

My Favorite Prayer is the prayer of FORGIVENESS (Psalms 51) written by King David
Have mercy upon me, O God, According to Your lovingkindness, According to the multitude of Your tender mercies blot out y transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity. And cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions and my sin is always before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned and done this evil in Your sight- That You may be found just when You speak and blameless when You jugde.Behole, I eas brought forth in iniquity and in sin my mother conceieved me. Behold You desire thruth in the inward parts and in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom. Purge me with hyssop and I shall be clean. Make me hear joy and gladness that the bones You have broken may rejoice. Hide Your face from my sins and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God and renew a the right spirit within me. do not cast me away from Your presence and do not take Your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation and uphold me by your generous Spirit. Then I will teach transgressors Your ways and sinners shall be converted to You. Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshe, O God The God of my salvation and my tonguye shall sing aloud of Your righteousness. O Lord, open my lipsAnd my mouth shall show forth Your Praise. You do not desire sacrifice, or else I would give it. You do not delight in burnt offering. The sacrificies of God are a broken spirit A broken and a contrite heart These O God you will not despise. Do good in Your good pleasure to Zion. Build the walls of Jerusalem. Then You shall be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness, With burnt offering and whole burnt offering: Then they shall ofer bulls on Your alter. Amen!!!!

Wow, reading some of these posts is hilarious! bunch of new age modernist hippy religions. Jesus is God therefore God sacrificed himself for our sins that who so ever believeth in him (Jesus) has everlasting life. To say that all faith is personal is true we each come to the FATHER by faith, in faith we walk with him, sometimes we dont and things befall us to bring us back to him. to say Faith is of a personal heart is evil. the Bible teaches mens hearts are deceitfully wicked and evil, blasphemys and unrightous thoughts come from the heart. It isnt about removing yourself from your brain and becoming a bleeding heart. God gave you a brain and an instruction book called the Holy Bible, figure it out for yourself. The idea that everyone has their own idea of what/who God is and no one is right or wrong is straight from Satans mouth (Lucifer-the Deceiver/Divider)

It took me A long time to realize that God has a specfic plan for each one of us. Faith and obedience is all he asks and he will guide you on that perfect plan thur Jesus.

I accept Saw’s assessment of some of the comments posted here, though I do not understand or accept it as my own. To say that there is only one path to everlasting life is to deny the multitude of religions existing in the world. Religions that clearly are not born of evil and whose tenets often, and in large part, reflect the beliefs of Christianity. I believe it is possible to be a Christian while it is also possible to recognize the diversity of religious thought in the world and to acknowledge that many paths are possible in seeking everlasting life or spiritual growth through a divine being.

IF every one was allowed to interpret the Holy Bible the way he/she wants,there would have been as many religions as the world”s population.but it is evident from the Bible that Jesus Christ established only one church and one religion.Had he wanted us to have personal faith, He would not have given the promise He gave st.Peter.so I suggest we begin searching for the only route to eternal life

It is amazing that the biggest form or bigotry that I see growing is religious bigotry. Christians, Catholics, Baptist, Johovah Witnesses, Protestants or any JESUS base religion all hate each other and all think that they are better then the other. If we are so judgemental with each other who is making God happy? How can Jesus be pleased with any of us. Before you condem your brother remember that you may be condeming yourself. Catholics do the sign of the cross, Christians do not, Muslims get on their knees 5 times daily but Christians will not because they will get thier clothes dirty.
If (excuse spelling)mohammed, budda, ghanish, or any other religion holy men / women were so loving then why do they all come to a CHRISTIAN nation under the Lord JESUS CHRIST to be free. Christians need to stand up and shout from the hill tops and protect our freedom because as many muslims have stated “we are comming here so that islam will rule”!

The prayer below helped me to find a job in a terrible economy. I had to say it for 44 days straight instead of the normal 9 days, though.
St Jude Novena (Saint of Desperate and Hopeless Causes)
Holy St. Jude, Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor of all who invoke your special patronage in time of need. To you I have recourse from the depths of my heart and humbly beg to whom God has given such great power to come to my assistance. Help me in my present and urgent petition. In return I promise to make your name known an cause you to be invoked. St. Jude pray for us and all who invoke your aid. Amen.
Follow with 3 Our Fathers, 3 Hail Marys, and 3 Glorias.
Our Father
Our Father, Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. And give us this day daily bread and forgive us our trespasses; as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation. But deliver us from evil. AMEN
Hail Mary
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Gloria
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. Amen.
