Therapy Thursday: Befriend Yourself

posted by Beyond Blue

pocket therapist front cover small.jpgI have decided to dedicate a post on Thursday to therapy, and offer you the many tips I have learned on the couch. They will be a good reminder for me, as well, of something small I can concentrate on. Many of them are published in my book, “The Pocket Therapist: An Emotional Survival Kit.

Have you ever wondered how long one of your friends would stick with you if you talked to her the way you shout at yourself?

My therapist calls me on this dichotomy practically every session.

“What would you say to a friend in your shoes?” she’ll ask me.

“I’d tell her to be gentle with herself, to eat a pint of Ben and Jerry’s and spend three hours watching Oprah if it made her feel better.”

Of course I need not go that far—especially if I don’t want to weigh 300 pounds–to exercise a little kindness to myself. Most of the time, all I have to do is to put away the whip, and make myself a friendship bracelet instead.

7 Ways to De-funk Yourself
The definition of FUNK: “to shrink from in fright or dread.” Oh yeah, and “a state of severe depression.” I like to think of it as the Diet Coke of depression … some of the same discomfort, symptoms, yuck, but also not the intense wrestling belonging to our friend, depression. When you’r

How to Get Unstuck
Brain hiccups. We all get a case of them now and then. For some they are fleeting and all a person has to do is to take a deep breath, visualize their departure, and poof! They’re gone. Not so easy for the rest of us. If I counted up the moments I spent trying to escape the broken record of my tho

Therapy Notes: Give Amy a Bottle
From my therapy notebook: I now know who to blame for my feelings of panic and anxiety … Amy. It’s all her fault. That’s what I call my amygdala, the delinquent cluster of neurons in the limbic system considered by most neurobiologists as the fear center of the human body, like the

8 Ways to Overcome Envy
I know that the fastest way to despair is by comparing one's insides with another's outsides, and that Max Ehrmann, the author of the classic poem "Desiderata," was absolutely correct when he said that if you compare yourself with others you become either vain or bitter, or, as Helen Keller put it:

T,
If u read my comment from yesterdays post then u know that right now being my own friend is tough. I am closer to my cat and dog who are here with me and know something is wrong with Momma than most people!
I normally enjoy cross stitch, crafting, especially this time of yr with the Harvest decorations. I just can’t get past the front door. My wrecked car is in the driveway, gives me PTS everytime I look at it. I have decided to have it hauled off. I have my Mother’s family giving me a hard time about the house I am living in which my Mother was given a life estate to. But now that she moved in with my Sister to care for her they want me out and want it back. A 70 yr old, woodframe house that needs ALOT of work. But it is paid for. Being perm disabled I live off of $449 a mth and food stamps. I get just enough to pay the utilities. I do not have the money to replace my car. I am just hanging in here till whatever happens in this World happens. My personal belief is all HELL is going to break loose in Oct/Nov of this yr. With my Native American bloodline and beliefs I know our time left on this planet is very short. I am just occupying until the end…..
