Lessons I've Learned from Depression

lessons depression.jpeg

Not my lessons, of course. I like to focus on WHAT I'VE BEEN ROBBED OF because of this darn mood disorder. Ahem. OTHER PEOPLE'S LESSONS. I thought this was a very cool gallery, especially for BLACK (and blue) Friday.

Beliefnet asked our readers what lessons they've learned from their battles with depression and would share with others. Read on for their answers and suggestions to help you heal, day by day.

Again, this title is too positive to be my own. But we must start the holiday season with a heart of joy, no? Here's a good beginning ...

What is it about a short quotation that carries so much power? Anyone who has ever been moved by "I have a dream" or "I think, therefore I am" knows that a single, simple quote can change a day, a life, a world.

For those who suffer from depression, words of uplift and inspiration are always welcome. Explore these quotations and see if a few simple words might change your day, your life, or your world.

An Interview with Father Gratitude

emmons3.jpg

Here's an intriguing interview with Professor Robert Emmons, who is well known within the Positive Psychology field as "Father Gratitude" because he has been researching gratitude for 10 years, and has conducted all sorts of studies to try and help people practice the skill of "emotional self-regulation" or raise their happiness level. He is the author of "Thanks! How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier."

I want to be upfront, though, with you all and say this: although I find the studies and suggestions of Dr. Emmons, Martin Seligman, and all psychologists within the Positive Psychology movement to be helpful, I don't rely on them to bring me out of a depression. Because that's not their purpose. The techniques these folks present are geared toward the person with a normal happiness-level, or suffering from MILD to MODERATE depression. When I used them while in a suicidal state, they made me feel worse, which is why, to compliment this interview, I am also publishing my video on gratitude, that says if you are incapable of gratitude this Thanksgiving, that I think God more than understands and is with you in your whines and gripes (at least, geeze, I hope so).

For those capable of growing your gratitude this Thanksgiving, check out the article "Enhance Happiness and Health By Cultivating Gratitude: Interview with Robert Emmons" found at SharpBrains.com, by clicking here. I have excerpted from it below.

SharpBrains: What are the 3 key messages that you would like readers to take away from your book?

First, the practice of gratitude can increase happiness levels by around 25%. Second, this is not hard to achieve - a few hours writing a gratitude journal over 3 weeks can create an effect that lasts 6 months if not more. Third, that cultivating gratitude brings other health effects, such as longer and better quality sleep time.

SharpBrains: We could then say that we can train ourselves to develop a more grateful attitude and optimistic outlook in life, resulting in well-being and health improvements, and even in becoming better-not just happier- citizens. And probably one can expect few negative side effects from keeping a gratitude journal. What do you think prevents more people from benefiting from these research findings?

My sense is that some people feel uncomfortable talking about these topics, since they may sound too spiritual, or religious. Others simply don't want to feel obligated to the person who helped them, and never come to realize the boost in energy, enthusiasm, and social benefits that come from a more grateful, connected life.

SharpBrains: Judith Beck talked to us recently about her work helping dieters learn important mental skills through cognitive therapy techniques. You talk about gratitude. Other positive psychologists focus on Forgiveness. How can we know which of these techniques may be helpful for us?

The key is to reflect on one's goal and current situation. For example, the practice of forgiveness can be most appropriate for people who have high levels of anger and resentment. Cognitive therapy has been shown to be very effective against depression. In a sense both groups are trying to eliminate the negative. Gratitude is different in that it is better suited for highly functioning individuals who simply want to feel better - enhancing the positive.

Video: Depression and Gratitude

I know that the Thanksgiving holiday is all about gratitude. But what if you can't get there just yet? What if you're encased in fear, and listing your blessings only deepens your depression because you feel like a loser, a whiner, a spoiled brat of an American for not feeling truly grateful?

I know this sounds unpatriotic and totally self-absorbed but this is what I say: don't sweat it. You're not there yet. It's okay.

One day you will be, and your gratitude won't be forced.

I wish all my readers a very happy Thanksgiving holiday--those who are at a place in their recovery where they feel truly grateful, and those who aren't capable of compiling that list just yet.

Dear God: Do You Have a Minute?

I realize this is the week we are technically supposed to be grateful. But continuing with the theme of yesterday's vent, I thought I'd publish a letter I wrote to God awhile back. One way I pray to God is by venting, yelling at him, accusing him of a bad creation job. And as I said yesterday, I think this indicates that God and I have a good, healthy relationship--a real and organic one that involves lots of bickering and arguing. Here's my letter:

Dear God,

It's me, Therese (not Margaret). I hate to be a white, whiny, ungrateful pest (I've been called that before). But I'm feeling a bit like Job (you know, from the Bible).

First I've got this bipolar thing that almost killed me last year and is apparently mine to deal with for the rest of my life. On my bad days, depression shrinks and kills brain cells in the prefrontal cortex of my brain (of course you already know this)--which could mean that I'll be getting more and more stupid with every year. And these volatile moods don't exactly foster intimacy between a husband and wife, or facilitate mothering two needy preschoolers, one borderline special-needs with explosive outbursts at the top of every hour.

Then I've got this growth in my pituitary gland (a.k.a. brain tumor), which messed up my hormones enough to make me lactate like the overzealous cow on the Horizon dairy trucks (although I did consider becoming a wet nurse if the writing thing didn't happen.) The meds I take to shrink the growth bloat me so badly that David keeps asking me when his baby brother is due. And at my last visit to the endocrinologist, she told me that my Arnold-Schwarzenegger testosterone levels suggest that I might have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), a cyst-manufacturing operation right there in my ovaries, and sent me to get an echocardiogram (to see if I could start meds for the brain tumor), which, of course, showed a leaking, abnormal aortic valve in my left, no right, oh that's right I only have one, heart.

But God, the real killer was this afternoon, when a chiropractor told me that it's no wonder my right hip is sore because my entire right side is shorter than my left. He recommended that I not run for a long while, until the right and left sides of my body reconcile and shake hands--like a bipartisan Congress.

Not run?

For a quarter of a century I have, in "Forrest Gump" style, run off all my frustrations and anger and sadness and loneliness and despair and confusion. The year of the Great Depression I ran over 1,600 miles (the distance from Boston to Tampa)--talking to you, your mother, and St. Therese to keep me company. Running is my "go to," my salvation now that I gave up booze, smoking, caffeine (okay, not really), sugar (I try to anyway), and all my negative vices.

Not run?

You must have mistaken me for another woman, an even-tempered chick with far more patience. I am what you call a mentally ill addict with issues as tall as your pearly gates. I depend on things here on earth until I see (at least I hope to) your face in heaven. And in trying to avoid all mood-altering substances, I choose constructive habits like running, which make my brain very happy.

I'm curious, God. Did I do something bad in a past life? Are you angry with me about something? Can we talk about it?

I know that I am far more blessed than 99.9 percent of the world. Don't even get me started on everything I have to be grateful for. Oprah and friends remind me every day. I know, I know, I know, and that only makes me feel worse. Like I suck at one more thing: gratitude.

I was just wondering if you could maybe take it a bit slower with all these "character building" exercises. I need a little time to recover before you pop out the next surprise.

Thanks so much,

The bipolar lady with brain tumor, abnormal aortic valve, and short right side
