Avoid All Forms of Self-Rejection: Stop Blaming Yourself

Again I quote the eloquent Henri Nouwen. If you haven't caught on yet, I adore that man, as he somehow managed to spy on my brain for the last 38 years. In "The Inner Voice of Love," he writes:

You must avoid not only blaming others but also blaming yourself. You are inclined to blame yourself for the difficulties you experience in relationships. But self-blame is not a form of humility. It is a form of self-rejection in which you ignore or deny your own goodness and beauty.

When a friendship does not blossom, when a word is not received, when a gesture of love is not appreciated, do not blame it on yourself. This is both untrue and hurtful. Every time you reject yourself, you idealize others. You want to be with those whom you consider better, stronger, more intelligent, more gifted than yourself. Thus you make yourself emotionally dependent, leading others to feel unable to fulfill your expectations and causing them to withdraw from you. This makes you blame yourself even more, and you enter a dangerous spiral of self-rejection and neediness.

Avoid all forms of self-rejection. Acknowledge your limitations, but claim you unique gifts and thereby live as an equal among equals. That will set you free from your obsessive and possessive needs and enable you to give and receive true affection and friendship.

Find Your Way: Check Your Assumptions

assumptions book.jpg Fellow Annapolis author R. K. Caroland wrote a nice little book called "Find Your Way." I especially appreciate what he wrote about assumptions:

One of our biggest mistaken assumptions is that everyone thinks like me. So most of the decisions that we make are based on the way we think. This of course leads us to assume that what's good for us is good for everyone else. So when we jump to a particular conclusion about something, it is based on what we want it to be and this is the definition of an egocentric person.

5 Clues You Should Be Letting Go of Something: An Interview with Eileen Flanagan

EileenFlanagan 2.jpg A week or so ago I discussed Eileen Flanagan's book, "The Wisdom to Know the Difference." It is with honor that I interview her on Beyond Blue today. If you'd like ot learn more about her, visit her website at www.EileenFlanagan.com.

Therese: What are five clues you should be letting go of something?

Eileen:

1. You find yourself repeating the same complaint to different people.

We all get frustrated from time to time, but it's not good for our mental or spiritual health to wallow in frustration. I remember once I got irritated with another mother at my kid's nursery school after she did something that inconvenienced me. I complained to the first mother I ran into, and then the second. When I heard myself repeating the story for the third time, it hit me that I was making myself more agitated, not less. I was also putting poison in the community well. Someone had made an honest mistake, and I needed to get over it.

2. You're churning over in your brain what you wish you (or someone else) had done.

You can't change the past. Period. If you can't stop thinking about something that has happened, reframe your internal conversation by asking what you have learned from the experience or what you want to do differently next time. Just replaying the same tape isn't going to get you anywhere.

3. Your body is showing signs of anxiety.

Often our bodies give us clear messages about what is going on inside of us. For some people, anxiety manifests in not being able to sleep. For me, heartburn is a frequent symptom, as well as tight shoulder muscles. If you pay attention to how you feel when you are at peace as well as when you are anxious or angry, you can learn to use your body as a barometer. Awake at 2AM again? That may be your sign that you need to let go of something.

A Bipolar Serenity Prayer

I absolutely loved the following Serenity Prayer post by Larry Drain of Hopeworks Community. I am going to refer to it as often as I can because therein his words, I believe, is the guts of our recovery ... To get to Larry's other blog posts, click here.

A friend one time told me that the serenity prayer was the best description he knew of successful recovery from bipolar disorder. He described it a little differently than you normally hear:

God- Life is about more than me. There is a meaning and design to the world independent of what I think or feel. The first (and maybe biggest) trap of bipolar is to convince you that "it" is all about you and the measure of how things are is how you feel. "Life is not about what I can or cannot control, thank goodness, because so much of this is beyond my control." There is a "higher power." There is someone to turn to when I feel all alone and powerless and all feels loss.

grant me the serenity- "Grant"- that means it is a gift. It is not something I earn or create. Serenity is not something that I accomplish. It is something I accept. And again it means giving up my need to control. "If everytime I say control I could change it to manage or influence my life would be so much better." Serenity is a focus on here and now. It is not being angry or sad about things gone wrong, or anxious about things yet to go wrong. Serenity is about taking things as they come.

To accept the things I cannot change- acceptance is such a major part of dealing with this. So much time is needlessly worrying about "what I got", and not enough about "what I do with it." Control is a focus on what I got. Management is a focus on what I do with it. A first rule of walls- "No matter how much you bang your head on them it doesn't create a door to walk through."

the courage to change the things I can- To live with bipolar means to be scared. There is a good reason some people call it a "terminal disease." Positive steps are sometimes so small that they don't always even seem a step. There are enough wounds and scars that you can't help but worry sometimes about what is next. "And sometimes it so hard and so tiring and seems so impossible you just don't want to try. Giving up seems to make such good sense."

And the wisdom to know the difference- The beginning of all is to know. "Knowledge is necessity." A big part of knowing what to do is knowing what you got. Another major part of wisdom is staying focused. Looking. Not assuming that because something feels so it doesn't make it so. Wisdom also means realizing when you are not being so smart. The smartest thing is to be able to see our foolishness quick enough not to wreck.

It is important to realize that these things don't just happen sequentially. It isn't just do this first and this second and so on. Each one feeds into the other and the other feeds into it. Serenity helps give you courage, but courage increases your serenity. Wisdom helps to develop both, but each of them also increases wisdom. It is a net in effect. The serenity prayer in a real way is a safety net to keep you from drowning in the high waters of bipolar.

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change
the courage to change the things I can
and the wisdom to know the difference.

Amen

Henri Nouwen: Keep Choosing God

From Henri Nouwen's "The Inner Voice of Love":

You are constantly facing choices. The question is whether you choose for God or for your own self-doubting self. You know what the right choice is, but your emotions, passions, and feelings keep suggesting you choose the self-rejecting way.

The root choice is to trust at all times that God is with you and will give you what you most need. Your self-rejecting emotions might say, "It isn't going to work. I'm still suffering the same anguish I did six months ago. I will probably fallback into the old depressive patterns of acting and reacting. I haven't really changed." And on an on.

It is hard not to listen to these voices. Still, you know that these are not God's voice. God says to you, "I love you, I am with you, I want to see you come closer to me and experience the joy and peace of my presence. I want to give you a new heart and a new spirit. I want you to speak with my mouth, see with my eyes, hear with my ears, touch with my hands. All that is mine is yours. Just trust me and let me be your God."

This is the voice to listen to. And that listening requires a real choice, not just once in a while, but every moment of each day and night. It is you who decides what you think, say, and do....Choose for the truth of what you know. Do not let your still anxious emotions distract you. As you keep choosing God, your emotions will gradually give up their rebellion and be converted to the truth in you.

You are facing a real spiritual battle. But do not be afraid. You are no alone. ... Remember you are held safe. You are loved. You are protected. You are in communion with God and with those whom God has sent you. What is of God will last. It belongs to the eternal life. Choose it, and it will be yours.

Human beings are creatures of habit, which is why Spencer Johnson sold more than ten million copies of his book, "Who Moved My Cheese?" Business executives sit down to PowerPoint presentations based on it, and depressed patients watch the "Who...

Merton's Cheese

The Trappist monk Thomas Merton was able to articulate in beautiful language so many of my struggles as a mentally ill person stuck in destructive thoughts and patterns. The following passage from one of his letters (published in a collection...

Are Coincidences Mini-Miracles?

While we're on the topic of spiritual communication, I have wanted to say for some time that nothing pleases me more than to read on the various message boards notes like this: "I stumbled across your post when looking for...

Be a Nobody

For me Lent is about emptying--a glass, a basket, a soul--so that it can be filled up again...with wine (or sparkling cider), peeps (think Easter basket), and hope. The forty days before Easter is one big humbling exercise--where you remind...

Cupid's Lemonade

In order to move beyond their dark days, most depressives master the lesson on how to make lemonade from lemons. For Valentine's Day, here's a romantic tale on just that: how a friend of mine turned an embarrassing situation into the...

A Girdle?

This passage from Kahlil Gibran's "The Prophet" is where I'm going with this wide hat, container lady, Michelin Man stuff:"You shall be free indeed when your days are not without a care nor your nights without a want and a...

When Crap Befalls Decent Folk

Whenever I hear of a story like I did today about the seven-year-old dying in his sleep, I always go back to Harold Kushner's classic "When Bad Things Happen To Good People."Now, remind me again, good Rabbi, why does crap...

God Places

I'm a pilgrimage kind of gal. Throughout my life, I've flocked to places marked with divine fingerprints: Lourdes, France, where the muddy hole Bernadette Soubirous dug 150 years ago became a river of healing waters; Mexico City, home to the...

I Pray For Dawn

If I counted up all the minutes I've spent staring into a flame, I wonder how many years of my life that would be. Certainly more than the hours I've spent brushing my teeth or combing my hair. It would...

You Go Girl

Maybe it's because I'm mentally ill myself that I find the behavior of "American Idol's" contestants perfectly normal. Even if the early audition crowd does suck--if they are "humiliations set to music" (according to a "Washington Post" article)--more power to...

Yes Moments

On "yes" moments, the Swedish diplomat Dag Hammarskjold wrote this in "Markings": I don't know Who--or what--put the question. I don't know when it was put. I don't even remember answering. But at some moment I did answer Yes to...

God the Evergreen

Our Christmas tree is now on the curb with the rest of the 33 million trees Americans bought this year (according to the National Christmas Tree Association). I'm feeling guilty of course (don't all depressives?) for not being a better...

The Heart of It All

Now that the Santas and stockings have disappeared to the North Pole along with the holly-jolly tunes and the Salvation Army bells, commercial-savvy marketers reach out in desperation for some holiday or other excuse to make us buy, buy, buy....

My Epiphany on Epiphany Sunday

An epiphany can mean several things: an "Aha!" moment after relentless searching and study, the first time you see something (or someone) in its natural form, or the Christian feast commemorating the visit and adoration of the Christ Child by...

How Did You Do?

I think I overshot on last year's New Year's resolutions. Did I really think I could achieve a dozen goals? Here's how I did:1. Commit to a charity (happened--if driving my mom-in-law around one day a week qualifies.)2. Meditate every...

Yes, Depressives, There Is a Santa Claus

Here's the full text of "Yes, Virginia, There Is a Santa Claus," which articulates for me why we have to believe, love, and hope even when our cynical and depressed brains don't want to: "Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa...

Believe Without Seeing

All the Christmas movies--from the classic "Miracle on 34th Street" to "The Year Without a Santa Claus" preach a common message: faith is about believing without seeing. In our family favorite, "Elf," Santa's sleigh, fueled by Christmas spirit, crashes into...
