Disabling Anxiety: 10 More Tips

anxiety woman, real simple.jpg

In my post, "Disabling Anxiety: What Do You Do?" I asked you for your techniques on managing anxiety. I posed this question on a discussion thread in Group Beyond Blue, too. My therapist friend, Elvira Aletta, gives us yet 10 more tips in her Psych Central blog post, "Ten More Ways to Lower Anxiety," which is a sequel to an excellent post I featured the other day: "10 Ways to Lower Anxiety and Find Empowerment."

Skimming through Real Simple magazine at the check out line of the supermarket, I came across Dr. Robert Leahy's article "10 Ways to Cope with Anxiety." Dr. Leahy is the director of the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy and the author of many books on the subject. His suggestions will help you calm your nerves:

1. Repeat your worry until you're bored silly.

"...take the troublesome thought that's nagging at you and say it over and over, silently, slowly, for 20 minutes. It's hard to keep your mind on a worry if you repeat it that many times."

Dr. Leahy calls this technique "the boredom cure." Behavioral scientists call it 'flooding'. I'm not so keen about this technique for my extremely anxious patients who are having trouble regulating their thoughts and emotions. If your anxiety is on the milder side, however, and you have the courage to do this, I recommend you think about your worries while practicing relaxation techniques to keep your body as calm as possible.

2. Make it worse.

"When you try too hard to control your anxieties, you only heighten them. Instead exaggerate them and see what happens."

This is a good one. When I suggest it to my patients I call it the 'Bring it on' technique or 'Fake it 'til you make it'. By inviting what scares you, you learn on your time that you can survive your fears instead of waiting to be bushwhacked by them.

Sports psychologists use this all the time. When I was terrified my horse would shy and dump me on the ground, my coach told me to stop trying to keep my mare from bolting. Instead she told me expect her to shy, to look forward to it. That attitude helped me relax and so did the horse.

3. Don't fight the craziness.

"You may...have thoughts that lead you to think you'll do something terrible...or that you're going insane... Remember - our minds are creative...every now and then 'crazy' thoughts jump out. Everyone has them."

In the weeks after my first child was born, when I was exhausted, sleep deprived and in the grips of baby blues, I had thoughts of throwing my screaming baby out the window. Those thoughts terrified me. Tearfully, I confessed my horrible thoughts to my mother who shrugged and said, "We all think something like that at some time. You didn't act on it, did you?" She assured me I wasn't crazy. I could relax.

My patients are sometimes surprised when I suggest they allow themselves to imagine doing something outrageous like throwing a banana cream pie at their nasty boss's puss. Unleashing our creative minds may be just what we need to de-stress.

4. Recognize false alarms.

"Many thoughts and sensations that we interpret as cues for concern-even panic-are just background noise. Think of each of them [rapid heart beat, tensing of muscles] as a fire engine going to another place."

Mindful Monday: 11 Ways to Treat the Death Thoughts That Come with Depression and Anxiety

s-WOMEN-UNHAPPY-large.jpg I want to express my sincere thank you for all the heartfelt comments on my post "A Tiny Glimpse Inside a Neurotic Head." And again, thank you to my editor, Holly, who insists I be as real as I can be, which means I write about wanting to be dead when those are the primary thoughts running throughout my head.

I sat down with both my therapist and my psychiatrist this week, and they outlined a plan for me to follow the next four to six weeks. I thought I'd let you in on it, in case some of these steps help you, too.

1. Continue to exercise as much as I can. Now is not the time to worry about the eating disorder in my past and weight issues. If working out gives me some relief from the death thoughts, then I should get my heart rate up whenever I can. Hell, I may even train for an Ironman!

2. Continue to use my light lamp for 30 to 45 minutes a day.

3. Distract myself whenever possible. In the words of Dr. Smith: "Don't try to think yourself out of the thoughts. Any attempts to do that will most probably make them worse. Instead try to simply distract yourself." She told me to forget about the cognitive and mindfulness strategies for the time being. They can help later on, when the death thoughts don't have such a hold over me.

4. Rest whenever possible. My therapist friend Elvira Aletta, helped me immensely the other day when she told me to treat the intense death thoughts like you would contractions when you're in labor. You have to rest between the spikes of intense pain in order to sustain enough energy to get through the pangs. Because dealing with the thoughts take up so much energy, it is crucial to rest during the reprieves.

3 Ways to Change with the Seasons

s-AUTUMN-LEAVES-large.jpg
I enjoyed FreshLiving blogger Valerie Reiss's suggestions on how you can change with the season. Even as I love the four seasons, I do experience some anxiety with the transition from one to another. Here are her three suggestions of how you can change with the seasons. Get to her original post by clicking here.

1) Mark the Moment.

Notice and acknowledge to yourself that a shift is happening. It sounds corny, but see how that makes you feel--anxious, excited, ambivalent? There may even be some grief associated with letting go of the past season or entering the next--minor or major. Seasons come around every year, but they can still a big deal--let yourself fully experience whatever is real for you.

2) Honor the Shift with a Ritual.

This can mean everything from changing over your closets to throwing a cocktail party or potluck. Most of us live far from the land so we've lost many cues from the natural world. Summer is about bounty, in fall we enjoy the harvest and prepare for winter, a time of inwardness, and spring is the poignant new beginning that allows us to bloom all over again. See what you can do to honor the flavor of each.

3) Take Stock and Look Ahead.

I like treating each season like a new year--I get a surge of hope about who I might be and what's next. You can sit down, reflect on the last season and what you'd like to get out of the new one--from mundane to profound. For example, looking at fall, I'd like to: a) Find a new yoga class to attend regularly b) Buy a couple of new sweaters and a denim skirt (why, oh why is every denim skirt I see bleached, ripped, and crotch-high??) c) Throw a holiday party d) Allow more love, pleasure, and joy into my life.
