How’s That Again? Prevent Hearing Loss #3

posted by sbrown

Noise — it drives us nuts. It also damages our hearing.  As we get older, we see the cumulative effect of the blare of loud music, screaming kids, and roar of traffic of a lifetime.  However, there is hope!  I read that magnesium, found in bananas, artichokes, broccoli, and potatoes, can help prevent noise-induced hearing loss.

One thing I’ve learned about online research, though — you have to make sure what you read is so!  That’s a challenge, because on almost every subject there will be opposing opinion and “proofs.”   I love it when I can find official scientific studies that back up what the sites are saying. And this is one that has several studies behind it. One study I found on Pub Med was done with soldiers in basic training in Israel.  The course involved repeated exposure to noise.  All the soldiers wore earplugs, but one group received 167 mg. of magnesium aspartate.  The other group got a placebo.

The result?  The magnesium group had less hearing damage.  The amount of damage was directly correlated to the amount of magnesium in the red blood cells.  Less magnesium — more hearing damage.

What can you do to prevent age-related hearing damage?  Turn down the volume and eat a banana!

Here’s where I found the study

Recipe Day -- Good-For-You Chocolate Cake
I looked at the recipe in disbelief.  NINE eggs? Surely that was a misprint.  Only 3/4 cup flour in a cake?  Not likely.  As I studied about coconut flour, though, I saw that, yes, it does take that many eggs to make a successful cake with this healthy type of flour, and it takes a much smaller

How Do You Know When to Stop Eating?
“We asked 150 Parisians how they knew they were through with dinner,” food psychologist Brian Wansink, PhD, said.  “They said, ‘When we’re full.’  When we asked 150 Chicagoans that they said, ‘When the plate is empty.’” * No wonder 2/3 of American adults are overweight and hal

You are welcome! And I hope you invest in good earplugs, too!

Target shooting and car audio are two of my hobbies – both very noisy. I love them too much to give them up. Looks like it’s time to switch up my diet – thanks!
