The Seven Deadly Sins— by Geographical Region

posted by Ben Witherington

Are certain regions of the U.S. more prone to certain sins?  Well, according to one study, it certainly appears this is the case. Here is a link to an article in Wired Magazine that gives us the breakdown.

http://www.wired.com/culture/education/magazine/17-09/st_sinmaps

What this study suggests is that certain American subcultures are less prone to gluttony or envy or lust or road rage and certain ones are more prone in those directions.  I’m thinking the Amish in Western Pa. and Eastern Ohio didn’t entirely get a fair shake in some of these charts :)

See what you think.

The John Wesley Fellows Meeting at Candler---- The Senior Fellows
The John Wesley Fellowship began in 1977, with Steve Harper and yours truly being two of the first John Wesley Fellows chosen.  I have told the story of Ed Robb and AFTE  this past Fall on the blog so I will not repeat it.   Here are some of the senior fellows attending the meeting.

Guns and Religion--- Enough is Quite Enough
I was sitting at the traffic light when a pickup pulled up next to me.  On the back of the cab window was a bumper sticker saying 'Guns and religion. Now more than ever.'   Then I found the picture you see above, and then this one below......   My response to this nonsense above

I was happy to see that I live in a part of the world prone to greed and sloth, two of my favorite virtues, but I was disappointed that we did not make it for gluttony, as we do love to eat.

I tried to go to the link to see what this was about, but could not find it. Did the Wired site take the article down?

I’m not sure I like their definitions/tests. Gluttony is the worst: not average girth, or amount of food consumed per capita, but number of fast food joints? Come one.

This was okay. Their definitions of the seven sins are more than lacking. How can lust be measured by only STD’s? The research is faulty and makes huge sweeping statements while not taking into account other factors. Still interesting though.
