Wednesday: Following Their Bliss

Ruth Anne Wood came into my life as a precocious teenager with an innate sense of the creative. Words flowed from her and cascaded onto the page with a quality that could only be described as coming from an ‘old soul’. I started to refer to her as “Ruth the Poet”. Now she is “Ruth, the Spiritual Entrepreneur, Ruth the Peacemaker, Ruth the Coach, Ruth The Play-write, Ruth the Speaker, Ruth the Journalist and Interviewer”. She is a natural wellspring of inspiration.

When President Obama was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, Ruth came up with the idea to gather together a group of peacemakers for an afternoon that she called ‘Live Your Peace‘. It reminded me a bit of the movie ‘My Dinner With Andre’ where those of us in the workshop and subsequent film, sat around and spoke about the meaning of peace in our lives. What came out of it, was nothing short of miraculous as she put together a 6 minute video that has now spread world wide. She offers guidance for ‘getting your dreams out of the drawer’ through her work with what she calls ‘Scripting For Success’. She is the co-author with Stash Serafin; of the book: You Can’t Get It, Cause You’ve Already Got It: A Blind Figure Skater and Visionary Writer’s Inspirational Guide to Moving Through Life (2007) and with a group of talented writers: Abundant Magical Lives; Insights for Passionate People (2003)

One of the many things I love about Ruth is that she always has her antennae twitching for the next thing to attract. And attract it she does, as people are drawn to her like bees to honey. Today, after a service at Circle Of Miracles, an interfaith community we are both involved with, I stepped back and watched her work the room. She would float up to people and engage them in conversation, having them feel perhaps, as if they were the only person in the room and simultaneously part of a magnetic pull that drew others in as well.

Her methods are tried and true and she proudly says that she met her husband Jason by utilizing them. She created a list of qualities in her ideal mate, purchased fancy lingerie and cut her hair, all in preparation for calling him in. Within a very short time, she and a friend were out at a local restaurant and she struck up a conversation with a cute, brown haired young man. Magic occurred and on June 18, 2005, Ruth and Jason were married. I was the joyful officiant at their wedding in an exquisite outdoor setting, surrounded by loving family and friends.

A Box Full of Darkness
This image zapped me yesterday and at first I didn't want to look at it, or even acknowledge it. I much prefer to live in light than in darkness. Paradoxically, my work as a therapist over the past 3 decades has been with people who sit in shadow, cast out by those who were supposed to protect and n

Overheard in the bathroom at the gym recently : there was a young woman who was there with a friend and looked in the mirror and said "I look like shit today."  My initial inclination was to mind my own business, since what I had to say might not be well received. She didn

Living Legacy-Zach Sobiech
There are some moments  when the petty, day to day annoyances melt away in the face of the fireball sun realization that life is fleeting, experiences are transient and people are on loan to us. Last night, when I watched the You Tube viral phenom video called My Last Days (On Rainn Wilson's Soulpa

Ecclectic Enthusiast
Recently I was speaking with someone who felt dismayed that she wasn't able to focus on any one career path, interest or purpose. She referred to herself as a "Doomed Dabbler", destined to wander aimlessly in the wilderness with no hope of finding refuge. As we spoke, within moments, a lightbulb wen

Woo woo vs. Whoohooo!
Once upon a time, I would have considered some of the events of my life to be  fodder for Twilight Zone episodes, with the theme song (do do do do do do do do~) playing in my head when they would occur. I didn't dare talk about them, out of concern for being thought weird or  committable
