November is Positive Music Month; an opportunity to celebrate and use the power of melody and harmony to enliven and heal our bodies, minds and spirits. According to The Positive Music Association (PMA), it is ”about using popular music to improve the quality of people’s lives. We’re about seeing music not only as entertainment but as a means of creating positive change in the world. It’s about using music more intentionally, to inspire, uplift, heal or enlighten. Think of it as medicine or therapy via popular music.”
Members of the PMA include some of my favorite singer-songwriters: Elaine Silver, Jana Stanfield, David Wilcox, Scott Kalechstein, Shawn Gallaway, David Ault and Karen Drucker.
How does music enhance your life? Who are some of the musicians that delight your soul and tickle your ears? What are some songs that warm you from the inside when you hear them, inspire your creativity, have you tapping your toes and wiggling your hips, that have you singing in the shower, or along the highway?

Hands down, Alicia Keys’ “Superwoman”. If I am having a rough day this instantly picks me up.

I had a brain injury 3 and a half years ago. I had to isolate myself to heal and put all of my effort and energy into me. My kids went to live with their Dad in another state. My friends all faded away as I was not capable of being social. I have pretty much been alone.
Music has been provided me with so much companionship. It is like a friend who is in whatever mood I am in. I have an iPod with over 5000 songs on it with everything from world, music to Yibetan chimes to old rock to acoustic rock to techno. It is probably my most valuable possession.
My speech is still very effected from my brain injury. Now, I am doing music therapy and it is helping tremendously as music and speech use the same pathways in your brain. It is such a large part of my life and part of my soul.
